PINEHURST, N.C. — This was everything you want out of every major championship.
Star power at the top of the leaderboard.
Dripping drama to the final putt struck.
Palpable pressure on every shot.
A taxing and exacting golf course with zero margin for error. (Photos) The 124th U.S. Open was a true and proper war of attrition, just as it ought to be.
And when the day — the fourth consecutive sun-soaked day of oppressive 90-plus-degree heat — was over on Sunday, it was Bryson DeChambeau who was the last man standing.

At the U.S. Open Golf Tournament today, Tiger Woods did not play, having missed the cut and being eliminated from the competition on Friday. Turning to the NBA Finals...

Great tournament, all the more amazing when you consider that Bryson couldn't have hit a fairway if they'd allowed him to run out 325 yards with the ball and give him a free drop.
I always wanted to be able to make short putts like Rory McElroy, and now I can say that I can.

DeChambeau made an outstanding up and down from a bunker on the finishing hole. I felt sorry for McIlroy. That was a difficult left to right slider he missed on 18.

A rare moment in time. First, it came down to the last hole and last putt in the PGA. DeChambeau finishes second even though he played a great round of golf Schauffele just played better. Now DeChambeau beats McElroy on the final hole on the final putt. DeChambeau has been involved in two very exciting major tournaments. It is very thrilling to see such great competition as such a high level and such exciting events. I don't remember two majors with such drama back to back. Glad DeChambeau won but would have been thrilled if McElroy had won. Gosh, I hope the Open is as exciting.

One of America's indisputably great golf courses, Pinehurst #2 has hosted four United States Opens since 1999. Evidence of why the USGA keeps coming back was abundant this week. I loved seeing Italy's Francisco Molinari come to his 36th hole (the par 3 ninth hole) at seven over par, needing to ace the hole to make the cut, which was at +5. So he did!
Great major championship courses have great leaderboards. No exception here, even though Tiger and Phil didn't make the cut. There was no shortage of great play, as well as some goiter trouble on short putts from the two main contenders, once from Bryson DeChambeau #16, and twice from Rory McIlroy. On #16 Rory blasted his 3' 8" tap in past the left lip, while on #18 he babied a two and a half footer, stubbing it past the hole like Scott Hoch in the 1982 Masters playoff. You've got to bring it all the way to the clubhouse.
DeChambeau, wearing his LIV Tour shirt and cap, put on quite a show. So did PGA Tour stalwart Rory. Bryson's 55 yard bunker shot on #18, a thing of beauty, should be called a "golf shot" for all time. Note that Bryson's LIV buddies like Sergio Garcia were there to congratulate him afterward. At PGA Tour HQ in Ponte Vedra, I can promise you that there were some John Kerry length faces this afternoon. TV commentator Brandel Chamblee, right there with them psychologically, was hurting inside. Serves him right. I remember him from the mini-tour days when he got taken in by a rival mini-tour that turned out to be a criminal enterprise. That error cost him over fifty large.
Congratulations to Bryson "Bison" DeChambeau. He's a clutch player. We will be hearing more from him.

Not a big golf fan but no tears from me for McCllory. Have found him to be one of the most unlikable people on tour.

Best man out there today won. Second best just missed. I was pulling for Cantlay and Finau as well. Both of them will get there someday.

Great and exciting US Open. Watch all 4 rounds and was sorry to see it over, British Open next month. If it's half as exciting as the US open sports fans are in for another treat.

DeChambeau took this title with epic up-and-downs the last two days, great, consistent putting when he had to make them. With normal five inch US Open rough, he'd not have been a factor. He took what they gave him, he took what Rory gave him. He's a swashbuckler.
I'm haunted by Rory, I can't imagine how he's feeling. FWIW he's not the first to lose a major championship with a missed short putt, he's one of many. He's part of golf history now, fans will cringe for decades.

#9 reminds me of Doug Sanders who missed a two and a half foot putt on St. Andrews 18 to fall into a tie with Nicklaus who beat him in the playoff. Someone asked Doug if he thought about that miss much...
"Nah", said Doug, "Sometimes I go a whole two hours without thinking about it".
