According to USA Today the crew on the MV Dali lost control of the vessel and reported that to Maryland Department of Transportation officials just before it collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. “The vessel notified MD Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel” and a collision with the bridge “was possible,” according to an unclassified Department of Homeland Security report. “The vessel struck the bridge causing a complete collapse.”
We're also learning more about what happened in the lead-up to the collision and collapse.
Clay Diamond, executive director of the Airline Pilots Association, told the New York Times that

Why is the executive director of the Airline Pilots Association reporting on what happened? As to the subject, what classified information do we not know?

Not. Operator error by O.P. (See the article, which reads correctly).
American Pilots Association - harbor pilots. Pilot at the helm had ten years, expetience. Ordered full left rudder and tried to drag his port (left) anchor to avoid the collision. No success.
Methinks there is much more to this incident than has been or will be reported.

Not the "Airline Pilots assoc", it's the "American Pilots Assoc".
MARINE Pilots, They take over command of ships in nearshore and harbor waters, and are considered much greater captains than those who merely cross wide open deep waters, often in only one class of ship. Pilots know EVERY type of ship, and have run hundreds through the various ports/straits, zones where they are based. As well as running constant simulator trainings on all types of ships, in all sorts of weather, with breakdown, collision avoidance, simulations of every imaginable scenario.

I don't know what speed they were going, but, the only alternative to a Left(Port) turn and dropping anchors would have been a Right turn into the shallows just outside the very narrow ship channel, they would have been into less than 20ft of water very quickly, into 12ft water within 500feet. The ship has about a 39ft draft, would have been aground and perhaps stopped in time. Though perhaps permanently stuck.

Sounds like a hunk of junk ship. What if it shutdown propulsion wise during a North Atlantic storm or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?

Fox news section has it the captain/ navigator violated procedure. In tomes of such emergency should have dropped anchors first then call for help. They lost precious time calling for help first.

If they lose propulsion, the bridge crew has no control.
Now, HOW did they lose propulsion, exactly?

The bridge opened for traffic on march 23rd....1977
Apparently cost $110Million to build...gonna be verrrry interesting to se what the "Rebuild" cost is gonna be.
Particularly in that even though it is a State Highway, Joe "Build Back Better" Biden has already said that The Federal Govt is going to cover all repair costs, no matter WHAT they are.

"Sounds like a hunk of junk ship. What if it shutdown propulsion wise during a North Atlantic storm or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?"
It's actually fairly new...and if it loses propulsion in open ocean, its just floats there, not harming anything until they fix it. Open water is very little threat to any ship...or even any decently designed "Boat".
I have a little over 80,000 sea miles under my keel, and was taught as a lad "It's not the sea that is a danger to ships, ships were made for that...It's that Hard Stuff around the edges of the sea you have to worry about"

no, 4--iirc, the claim is they were at 8 knots, dropped anchor, showed them to 7.5 knots -no clarity on the who
however=the who was doing what, when before things went sideways, then pear shaped.
speaking to ppl in other parts f the country-even the death toll is conflicting. RIP. heroes.

Could? How does this director of the APA know what he is saying? The MV Dali directly swerved toward the bridge as if by design. Wait until the real investigation is completed instead of speculating.

#12, it could have been the angle of the camera but it looked like it did exactly that. I am certainly no expert but it looked to me that the vessel was not to be in the center of the waterway but very close to the bridge support. I will never go across a bridge again without checking to see if a vessel is close to a support.
My heart breaks for those families who lost loved ones and worry that they will never know the truth. Who trusts the government anymore? When the FBI guy was speaking at the press conference, I was rolling my eyes when he said, “I can assure you…” Riiight…

Hmmmm. In the last few moments the ship turned EXACTLY to starboard to hit the critical pier. And LO the bridge collapsed totally. Now - the ship was outbound and had a harbor pilot aboard. I am 1500 mile upwind and it still stinks.
