This basically shuts down the port of Baltimore until the debris is cleared. The ship made a direct hit and the pilot of the ship radioed that the ship was out of control and may hit the bridge.

DEI right? Or was it terrorism? Who was PAID to destroy the bridge? Funny how this never happened before but ALL OF A SUDDEN an entire bridge is destroyed? Makes ya wonder. Biden does not want to BUILD infrastructure but he wants it destroyed along with no farming and no food. No charging stations, no cars, no jobs and he wants everybody to hate eachother. Not America First but biden wants NO AMERICA. China paid him well to destroy this country. TREASON.

Ship out of Singapore. I do not believe this is an act of terrorism. The ship lost its power twice before the collision. The Francis Scott Key Bridge is a MAJOR commuter route to/from Maryland, into Virginia and D.C. Thank God this did not happen during rush hour, which is extremely heavy up there.

At least 20 vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. This is a catastrophic disaster, and will be very disruptive.

Watching a video clip is interesting watching some vehicles scoot across just before the strike. They've got to be thanking their lucky stars. Then there's the construction crew go down with the bridge. Every day you never know what's in store.

Are not these ships "piloted " in and out of the harbors by Local pilots?

Re #7’s comment, they might have dropped the anchor. But if they were already too close to the bridge and moving at least several knots when they lost power, by the time the anchor can get to the bottom, dig in and the ship pull up on the chain it may have been too late. Having an anchor ready to deploy is a standard safety precaution whenever propulsion, steering or maneuverability is possibly compromised. I’m not familiar with port of Baltimore operations, I’d assume there was still a harbor pilot onboard, but typically there would be no tugs around at that point. Seems like if the ship was having power issues and the captain still thought it was safe to depart, he should have requested or been required to maintain a tug escort until clear of the harbor.

The bridge went down like a house of cards. Regardless, if the collapse was terrorism or a mechanical failure on the ship, the bridge was 50 years old and apparently not well-engineered. I hope the folks who went into the water are alive and ok.

Already I am hearing pundits on news shows talking about infrastructure and federal monies. Under Biden, infrastructure means payoffs to EV, solar and wind turbines manufactures. It doesn't mean reinforcing our bridges, etc. And the bridge may have been just fine structurally until the ship hit one of its supporting beams. But the Biden Admin will take advantage of this tragic accident.

Truck and car traffic flow will be blocked for years. Ship traffic for probably a few months if they do a good emergency job removing a portion of the bridge debris from a channel. Those huge container ships have so much 'sail area' from the high stacked containers that my bet is that the wind drove the ship out of control. My bet is wind conditions were too high for a safe passage. I've always wondered how they managed to steer these monsters if there were gusty winds, changing directions. Probably what caused this. Many hundreds of millions and years to get this bridge back in service.

RE #11, yes, and the report says that pilots were on the bridge at the time. Other reports are "the ship went dark minutes before impact". If electrical power is lost - was that because the main engine shut down, which would mean no power for steering, or to push the ship, it would then be just at the mercy of the winds, currents and tide, regardless of how skilled the pilots may have been. Sabotage, or incompetent engineers in the engine room?

Accident or infrastructure attack? This will close the entire port for an indefinite time. Jobs lost, trade lost. Massive disruption of a major port in a densely populated area. Just happened to lose control? Just as it's approaching a major bridge support? And then it swerves even closer to the bridge support? Looked at from the perspective of all of the other (accidental?) infrastructure attacks we see it's just too many coincidences. Whatever the government says caused it is likely to be a lie. Strike that "likely".

This is the best analysis I’ve seen so far. They apparently did drop the port anchor, they were doing about 8.7 knots when they lost power and started to go off course. They got power back, it looks like they were possibly backing down to try to slow, the anchor may have slowed them a bit, but it looks like they were doing 7.5 knots when they struck. 100,000 ton ship, the bridge didn’t have a chance.

Many ships these days are diesel electric, i.e. a diesel engine drives a generator which supplies electric power to electric motors that actually propel the ship. Same principle as a diesel electric locomotive.
