Why Bill Watterson Vanished

Original Article

Posted By: Ruhn, 8/16/2023 10:29:25 PM

When Bill Watterson walked away from Calvin and Hobbes in 1995, he was exhausted. The comic strip had consumed ten years of his life, the latter half of which were spent fighting his syndicate for creative control and warring with himself as he fitfully came to realize that he had nothing left to say about a six-year-old boy and his stuffed tiger. And the decision couldn’t have come at a worse time: Calvin and Hobbes was at the height of its popularity. To quit then seemed like career suicide. It was suicide, the intentional, ritualistic sort.

Makes zero sense to me. I did like the comic strips, and have several books.

To get away from tiresome people like Vic Rowan? Being creative, being bugged by barnacles like Rowan trying to hope some of your fame rubs off on them, and their trying to do the pathetic amateur psych job on you? I have his perfect cartoon on my fridge. Calvin in bed, covers pulled up to his chin. Caption: “I don’t feel like todaying.” Maybe that was Watterson’s real explanation?

Are there still Sunday comics? Not the news stories about politics and politicians, but actual comic sections. Watterson retired at the peak of his career and just as newspapers began their slow decline into little more than DNC house organs.

It's not a crime to say that you're done. I couldn't finish the article either. It just went on and on and on. He chose not to whore out his conic strip characters to his syndicate. He was not a money whore either.

I enjoyed C & H always, but I can understand the creator’s dilemma. It seems he was over his head and struggled constantly with keeping the creative juices flowing.

My Dad loved this comic strip! He always used to say "Everything you need to learn, you can learn from Calvin and Hobbes." I guess he saw the deeper meanings in the strip. Spoiler alert: For those who couldn't get through the article, he and his wife adopted a daughter when they were in their forties and he sounds like he is loving being a Dad!

Larson and Watterson -- seemingly coincidental with my entry into 20s and slide into 30s... Both seemed to launch, fly, return, and retire roughly in sync. It's just hard to fathom how that could have lined up so ideally. I did read this whole article and enjoyed the memories. What confused me: This starts with Rowan making abundantly clear how definitively Watterson left the public eye, refusing all efforts to suck him into interviews. But then it seems to present a long, heartfelt retrospective conversation with the artist, which makes me wonder whether the interview was imagined, or maybe Watterson's repeated refusals eventually gave way.

Three main points before getting to the substance.(snip)As long as President Trump appeals the decision to the Supreme Court, the appeals court stays their own ruling – essentially indefinitely. The Colorado primary ballots printed, and the primary election will be over, before the Supreme Court puts this on their docket. In addition to the virtual guarantee the high court will overrule this political nonsense, SCOTUS can make the entire issue moot before them by following their own normal schedule for submissions, arguments, deliberation and opinions delivered by the court.

You are not supposed to know about the contents of the laptop computer that Hunter Biden neglected to retrieve from a repair shop in Delaware. The 2020 election was fixed by the suppression of the evidence on it, and the Deep State — in the form of 51 former intelligence officers — saw to it that it was falsely dismissed as Russian disinformation and rendered null and void as a factor in determining a significant number of votes. A former Trump White House aide named Garrett Ziegler obtained a copy of the hard drive and is speaking out and publishing its contents.

An interesting series of updates to the FBI whistleblower case of Joe Biden taking a $5 million bribe payment which now looks to have originated in Ukraine. The background claim is pretty basic. A whistleblower approached congress stating the FBI had a report, an unclassified FD-1023, detailing a conversation with a ‘confidential human source’ (CHS) that outlined Vice President Joe Biden taking a $5 million payment from a foreign national to affect a U.S. policy decision. The FBI agent responsible for investigating the CHS claim was FBI Supervisory Intelligence Analyst Brian Auten, a sketchy character from the Trump-Russia probe.

For his opening monologue tonight, Fox News host Tucker Carlson highlights the increased visibility of the dual justice system as it has shown up in just the past 48 hours. Using the Douglass Mackey conviction and the Donald Trump indictment, both from the state of New York, Carlson puts an exclamation point on the toxic nature of the two-tiered system of justice; accurately noting they are not trying to hide it, because the visibility of it is the point. The leftists in control of power positions want Americans to see their weaponization of that position in order to create fear and anxiety. The provocation is the point...

At present, polls show that his approval ratings are the lowest ever for an incumbent president but the very fact that 30% of those polled still believe he’s doing a good job means that idiocracy is now the normal state in America. All right, perhaps, I’m wrong and the average I.Q. in America hasn’t decreased to -50.

Dr. Claudine, current President of Harvard University, is one lucky woman or, as she might describe herself a “a lucky woman of color.” She first survived her dreadful testimony before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, where she refused to unambiguously denounce calls from Harvard students and faculty to kill all Israeli Jews. It was an embarrassing performance filled with weasel words and amorphous defenses such as “it all depends on context” as if genocide might be legitimate in some circumstances. Gay’s second lucky break was to survive clear-cut evidence that she was a career plagiarist, and this scholarly dishonesty far exceeded inadvertent sloppiness.
