I am ashamed to acknowledge that, as a teenager, I read “Letter to a Christian Nation” — an anti-religion treatise on the virtues of atheism — and found myself impressed with Sam Harris’ intellectual prowess. How naïve I was, as we all were at that age. The mainstream media is excited: Two “conservative” law professors argue Trump is barred from running under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment. There are just two problems: These professors aren’t conservative, and their argument is foolish.

Trump is ineligible to be president under a provision of the Constitution that bars people who have engaged in an insurrection from holding government office. Robert Gover wrote the cult classic One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding. It might have been cutting-edge in 1962, when it was published, but not for long. Insofar as my subject here is related to President Biden, I can note that Hunter Biden’s misadventures have taken reality far beyond Gover’s satire.
However, I have found Gover’s title an irresistible source of headlines for comments on the news. Today comes word via the New York Times that the Biden administration has entered into a $6 billion arrangement with Iran for the return of five imprisoned Americans. The United States Women’s National Soccer Team is out of the Women’s World Cup. You couldn’t have missed the story, the media was more invested in the team than some team members appeared to be – hyping their every move. But the dream is over, they lost to Sweden on penalty kicks. While the press laments their defeat, a lot of normal people, myself included, are either engaging in schadenfreude over the loss or desperately fighting the urge to. For that reason, Special Counsel Jack Smith is trying to establish that President Trump knew for a fact that he had lost the election.
