Michigan bill would ban cat declawing

Lansing — Michigan could become the third state to ban the declawing of cats under a bill introduced Thursday in the state Legislature. House Bill 4674, sponsored by Rep. Jimmie Wilson, Jr., D-Ypsilanti, would ban the common practice except for "therapeutic" purposes, which would not include protecting against damaged household furniture or other scratches. New York and Maryland have already banned cat declawing as cruel and unnecessary, said Leaha Skylar Dotson, Wilson's legislative and policy director. "There's a lot of misconception that we're just trimming off the nail," Dotson said.

Aborting up to the moment of birth: enshrined in the state constitution. But don't you dare declaw your cat. THAT'S cruel.

We actually declawed a cat decades ago. Just the front ones. I had a grandbaby on the way and didn't want him to scratch her. I will never, ever do that to a cat again. He lived 12 years but his last two or three his back was sore and in bad shape. Too much use of back claws to make up for lost front claws. I told him how sorry I was.

Whitmer is running my former home state into the ground, and THIS is their priority? Cats are declawed because they live INDOORS!! They are not subjected to any pain in the declawing process. ASK anyone who actually OWNS a cat!!

Didn't Michigan threaten doctors and pharmacists with loss of their professional licenses if they dared offer or distribute repurposed drugs to their human COVID patients? That threat prevented patients from getting access to well studied drugs that OTHER doctors said were safe and effective. When given early, the drugs was found to clear the virus in a matter of days. So Michigan stood between doctors and human patients, and now that state has decided it is in a better position than vets to determine what is best for every cat in the state. No end to the arrogance of people firmly convinced they are mentally and morally superior to everyone else.

I've had many indoor cats over the years and to keep furniture damage to a minimum I cut the little sharp needles at the tip off the claws regularly beginning when they were babies. It didn't eliminate the damage to a couch but it did help. I had two rescue cats that came to me declawed. Both were pure white, deaf, and had great personalities. They were the cats of my dreams.

#3 contrary to what you think, I've seen declawed cats post-op at the vet's before they're sent home, - they writhe in pain and cry, even when on pain meds. Declawing is the equivalent of cutting off your fingers at the first knuckle. Also, not all vets are skilled at declawing. I have a vet friend who has had to fix botched declawings. Finally, declawed cats will run to an open door and there's no guarantee they won't make it outside. Don't do it.

I agree with MI on this one. Like #2, I declawed a cat once, thinking that they just remove their claws somehow. I was horrified, years later, to find out what they actually do, and that I had allowed it to happen. To those who say it’s no big deal, how would you feel if someone cut off the ends of your fingers? You want an indoor cat? Get a scratching post or live with the damage, but leave their claws alone.

The only Cat Laws I would support....All cats must be Belled, must be licensed/mandatory shots(just like dogs) At our farm any cat seen without a bell is shot on sight, year round.(we spend a lot of time and money, decades worth, propagating for game birds, quail, pheasant, grouse, woodcock, ALL are ground nesters, and cats WILL kill them ALL, even just one cat. In town? I'll live trap them one time, hand them over to their owner with a warning, One Time. Without bells they kill off the entire crop of baby songbirds within the 6ft high wood fenced 3/4 acre lot of our home in town. I have already had to give up on hatching gamebirds in town..

We always front declawed our house cats. Our barn cats were a no. When we lived on the farm, the house cats would go in and out. Considering most of our house cats over the years lived to be 14-18 years old, I can't see where declawing bothered them. They were all great mousers even without claws and kept the dogs in their places too. Over the years we have had at least a dozen or more house cats, so it wasn't just one or two. My last house cat was over 18 y/o when she died and she traveled all over the country with us. Right now I don't have cats, but am considering getting another one or two to keep the mouse population under control.

Cat declawing is the same as removing human fingernails by cutting off one's fingers at the second knuckle on each finger. IOWs cat declawing is barbarous.

All of my house cats have been declawed. They recover quickly and don't miss their claws. If you don't want to do it, don't. It isn't a big deal. It isn't the same as getting "fingers" cut off, good grief. Cats don't surf the net! Cat claws are destructive and dangerous. If you outlaw declawing, many people won't adopt these beautiful creatures. Of course the left doesn't care a whit about cats. The left simply wants to tell YOU what do do. They can go pound sand. My declawed housecats are happy, fed, and loved. Three things the left wants to eliminate. If my state makes it illegal, I won't get another cat.

Either you want a cat or you don't. Cats come with claws, that's how God made 'em. If some carpet or piece of furniture is more important to you than a cat's natural need, then don't get one. It's really not that hard a decision.

My toddler, Wheeler, will probably not live to adulthood. Juvenile Batten disease — he has the type known as CLN3 — is stealing his childhood. And then this rare disease will steal my child. Wheeler is missing the DNA needed to recycle a waste product called lipofuscin that his cells naturally produce. As lipofuscin builds up, his condition will get worse, robbing him of his eyesight, his speech, his mobility, and ultimately his life. Our only hope is finding a treatment to cure, or at least a way to slow down this unrelenting disease.
