NYC Mayor Warns Protesters to ‘Be on

New York City mayor Eric Adams on Monday discouraged unruly political demonstration over the indictment of former president Trump, who is scheduled to be arraigned at the Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday. Addressing reporters at a press briefing, Adams warned prospective protesters that disorder and lawlessness will not be tolerated by the massive NYPD deployment that will be on-scene outside the courthouse in lower Manhattan as Trump arrives to be fingerprinted and photographed Tuesday morning. “Control yourselves. New York City is our home, not a playground for your misplaced anger. We are the safest large city in America because we respect the rule of law in New York City,”

The collapse of freedom in the Western world proceeds apace. Misinformation boards. Government backdoors into social media companies. Bogus “fact checks” that promote outright falsehoods. And now an arrest for being mean to Emmanuel Macron on Facebook. An actual arrest for calling him “filth.” You are likely aware of the raging protests in France over pension reforms. As much as I hate to admit it, I am with Macron on this issue. Raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 is hardly draconian given the increase in lifespans and the fiscal crises all pension programs face. The protests have been “fiery but mostly peaceful,” as they say.

The speech given by former US President Donald Trump is one that is likely to generate mixed reactions. In the speech, Trump talked about a number of issues, including the many attacks against him and his administration, the state of the economy, and the potential for a nuclear war. Trump also touched on the raid on Mar-a-Lago, the Presidential Records Act, and the Espionage Act of 1917. In a deft move, the former president used the indictment to further drive home the point that the left has been using the government to attack him politically. He accuses them of spying on his campaign, launching fraudulent investigations, and attempting to impeach

You can read Alvin Bragg’s indictment of Donald Trump and a supporting statement of facts here. The indictment is what we expected. It all has to do with paying $130,000 to Stormy Daniels for a non-disclosure agreement, which was legal. The payment was made by “Lawyer A,” Michael Cohen. Trump reimbursed Cohen using Trump’s own money, which was legal. The “34 counts” arise out of the fact that by agreement, Cohen got reimbursed by sending monthly invoices to Trump or his revocable trust. So for each monthly bill from Cohen, we get three counts of falsifying documents: one for the invoice, one for the ledger entry,

In a historic election, the liberal judge Janet Protasiewicz is projected to win her race for a seat on Wisconsin’s supreme court. Her win will flip the ideological balance of the state’s highest court, which has been controlled by a conservative majority for 15 years. Elections and democracy observers have called this election the most consequential one of the year, with abortion rights, redistricting and election rules at stake. The race pitted Protasiewicz, a Milwaukee circuit court judge and former prosecutor, against Dan Kelly, a former Wisconsin supreme court justice with ties to election deniers and the far right. Protasiewicz will replace the conservative justice Patience Roggensack on 1 August;

Donald Trump has claimed he is the victim of election interference, as he condemned New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg for bringing criminal charges against him hours after his arraignment. The former US president delivered an address to a crowd of some 500 people in his Mar-a-Lago estate ballroom in Florida after flying in from New York. In his first comments since being charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records, the 76-year-old said he "never thought anything like this could happen in America". Former President Trump has arrived at a Manhattan courthouse where he is set to appear Tuesday afternoon to be arraigned on criminal charges, a history-making event. Supporters and critics of the former president began gathering outside the courthouse earlier in the day. Some anti-Trump protesters cheered as he walked into the building. A grand jury in New York voted to indict Trump in connection with his alleged role in hush money paid amid his 2016 presidential campaign to adult film star Stormy Daniels to silence her allegations of an affair, which Trump denies. Trump is expected to return to Florida shortly after his arraignment, scheduled for 2:15 p.m.

The Republican lawmaker arrived amid the chaotic crowds of pro and anti-Trump supporters where she delivered brief remarks. Shouting through a small handheld megaphone, Greene's message to Trump's supporters was essentially drowned out by the mess of crowds and media gathered outside. What happens today when prosecutors book a former American president for the first time in our history? Nothing remarkable, Joe Tacopina told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos this morning. Donald Trump will get “processed the way anyone else would be, to a degree,” Trump’s lead attorney says, with the degree being that most defendants don’t have a Secret Service protection detail. Stephanopoulos wonders whether Trump might plead down to a misdemeanor to get this off his plate. Not a chance, Tacopina says, and doubts whether this case will even survive long enough for such discussions:

The Nordic country’s membership doubles Russia’s border with the world’s biggest security alliance. Finland had adopted neutrality after its defeat by the Soviets in World War II, but its leaders signaled they wanted to join NATO just months after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine sent a shiver of fear through its neighbors. In praising Finland’s membership, U.S. President Joe Biden noted it came on the 74th anniversary of the signing of NATO’s founding treaty on April 4, 1949.
