Standing before his parishioners holding the sacred bread of Communion in his hands, Father Vincent De Rosa, the pastor of St. Mary Mother of God Parish, solemnly intoned in Latin, “Ecce Agnus Dei.” The English translation of those words: Behold the lamb of God. Those kneeling in the church responded with ancient words of their own, “Domine, non sum dignus.” Lord, I am not worthy. An air of earnest contemplation hung over Sunday Mass, tinged by sadness. This would be one of the last weeks the church’s parishioners would be able to celebrate using a traditional Latin form that traces

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced steps Friday to speed up the clean-energy transition and fight climate change, including an end to building gas-burning power plants, even as the move away from fossil fuels has threatened his state with blackouts and forced him to reconsider nuclear power. (Snip) Perhaps most important, Newsom told the head of the California Air Resources Board that he doesn’t want new natural-gas plants built in the state. So many older gas-burning plants have closed in recent years that California experienced brief rolling blackouts in 2020 and has come close to outages on several other occasions, during

Parents in New York City are “PIST” over the fact that unairconditioned busses are transporting young and disabled children during a hot and muggy heat wave expected to crush previous records this weekend. Since the academic summer camp program began on July 5, hundreds of complaints have been received by the city’s Department of Education, according to The New York Post. (Snip) “The bus drivers are sweating through their uniforms, the attendants [too],” Paulette Healy from Brooklyn said. “Kids are coming off flushed, fatigued, exhausted – so many signs of dehydration and heat stroke.” Delays and longer ride times for

The decline in Jill Biden’s popularity was happening before the first lady apologized for comparing the diversity of the Latino community to the uniqueness of breakfast tacos at a conference celebrating Latinos in San Antonio last week. Before she mispronounced “bodegas” as “BO-gih-dahs” in the same sentence at the same conference. Before she’d expressed frustration with President Biden’s stalled domestic agenda at a private Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Nantucket, saying, “he had so many hopes and plans for things he wanted to do, but every time you turned around, he had to address the problems of the moment”

The Loeb Boathouse restaurant and event space in Central Park, a New York City landmark and tourist favorite featured in films and TV shows from “When Harry Met Sally” to “Sex in the City,” is closing its doors after almost four decades. In a filing with the state Department of Labor last week, the restaurant said it plans to permanently close effective Oct. 16, citing “rising labor and costs of goods.” A total of 163 union workers will face layoffs as a result. The restaurant, established in 1983, marks the third chapter in the building’s history. The boathouse was first

President Joe Biden has suggested that Delaware pollution including "oil slicks" may have been responsible for cancer experienced by him and "so damn many" others. While delivering a speech about climate change in Somerset, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, Biden said that environmental pollution during his childhood was so rampant that people needed to wipe oil off of car windshields to be able to drive. The president suggested that the pollution was to blame for the skin cancer that he would later experience, saying that Delaware used to have the "highest cancer rate in the nation''. Biden said that a former Massachusetts

Republicans sparred with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg over the cost of electric vehicles on Tuesday as some members of the House Transportation Committee accused him of favoring the vehicles as the response to high gas costs. The exchange came Tuesday when Buttigieg appeared before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to testify about the administration’s progress in implementing the bipartisan infrastructure law. Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) used the opportunity to press Buttigieg over the high cost of electric vehicles, which he noted are higher than the cost of an average compact car. Perry told Buttigieg that drivers in his district

MARIETTA, Ga. — Parents in Cobb County are demanding an apology because of a new elementary school logo they claim resembles a Nazi eagle symbol. The school in question is East Side Elementary near Marietta. A spokesperson for the Cobb County School District on Tuesday claimed the logo wasn't designed with Nazi imagery in mind, but because of backlash, the rollout of the new logo has now been halted. On social media, the school displays a current logo using an eagle as the centerpiece. On Monday a new eagle logo was sent to parents in an email from East Side's principal.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the House committee investigating the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, has tested positive for COVID-19. But the committee's next hearing, set for Thursday, is scheduled to proceed. "I tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, and I am experiencing mild symptoms. Gratefully, I am fully vaccinated and boosted," Thompson, D-Miss., said in a statement Tuesday. "I strongly encourage each person in America to get vaccinated and continue to follow the guidelines to remain safe." The committee said in a statement that Thompson is "disappointed with his COVID diagnosis" but has instructed the prime-time

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it seemed like everyone knew a co-worker fleeing the Bay Area. Now, a new report out of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago shows just how much the exodus is gaining steam. Only Illinois ranked worse off than the Golden State when it came to moving vans heading for the border during the pandemic, according to the report, which focused on data from the moving company United Van Lines. In 2018-19, 56% of moves in California were families fleeing the state. In 2020-21, that figure jumped to nearly 60%. The state that was by far the
