Standing before his parishioners holding the sacred bread of Communion in his hands, Father Vincent De Rosa, the pastor of St. Mary Mother of God Parish, solemnly intoned in Latin, “Ecce Agnus Dei.” The English translation of those words: Behold the lamb of God. Those kneeling in the church responded with ancient words of their own, “Domine, non sum dignus.” Lord, I am not worthy. An air of earnest contemplation hung over Sunday Mass, tinged by sadness. This would be one of the last weeks the church’s parishioners would be able to celebrate using a traditional Latin form that traces

The end of the Mass in Latin was the beginning of the downfall of the Church. Pope John Paul XXIII did it.

Sorry - Pope John XXIII. Pope John Paul was a true believer, and a saint.

I went some fifty years ago to a mass with a Catholic friend. Full disclosure, she was cute as hell and I had ulterior motives at 18 years old but I thought it was magnificent in Latin even not knowing the words. This is sad. The Latin Mass is worth keeping. Maybe when they get rid of their commie pope things will get better.

Surprisingly positive piece from the WaPo -- I was expecting the usual bashing of the conservatives of the Church, but it strongly sympathetic to their side.

May this fixation with suppressing the Traditional Latin Mass open more eyes and hearts as it did mine. The TLM is the real deal, full strength warfare against the demonic while most of the Novus Ordo is watered down at best, and irreverent nonsense at worst as in Chicago under Cardinal Cupich. The Bride of Christ is undergoing her own Passion. St. Michael the archangel, defend us in battle!

no more Latin Mass was one of the reasons I am no longer a practicing Catholic

#7 - I know that is your personal choice, but it saddens me because you are denying yourself the Eucharist. Though, I totally understand. I also love the Latin Mass and attend one whenever I can. I am terribly disappointed by Pope Frank, as is every conservative Catholic, but he will not be around forever.
I'm fortunate to have a conservative Bishop and we still have the Latin Mass available. He's been with us for seven years and our Novo Ordo Masses all include the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. It keeps us in touch with our roots. The Latin Mass itself was "new" once. It came from the Council of Trent in 1570. The rubrics and prayers of the Mass have changed over 2,000 years, but not the Sacrifice. Visit some different parishes in your area. Find a traditional parish with a good priest. The most important thing is do not forsake Mass and the Eucharist. God bless.

I was an altar boy, 1950 to 1954, prior to Vatican II. And somewhere, clinging to some brain cells, I still remember some of the Latin responses to the priest's words, all in Latin.
The Catholic Church in those days, was a peaceful, contemplative place to observe Mass. Congregants didn't sing hymns- that belonged to the choir, and the only musical instrument was the organ.
Then along came Vatican II. And the Mass became a hootenanny, with guitars and other musical instruments, liturgical dancing, and the peace and quiet of the Mass was shattered in 100 different ways.
Now, after leaving the Church and the Faith about 50 years ago, I occasionally attend a wedding in a Catholic Church, and it is completely foreign to me. Cantors and cantorettes leading the congregation in song, guitars killing the silence, special interruptions to the marriage ceremony for the bride and groom to light a candle to Mary, and strangely enough, a Hitler-like salute from the congregation to bless the marriage.
I'm afraid that Vatican II was like the New Coke. It just didn't taste good to a lot of people.
And, oddly enough, when I became an ELCA Lutheran, the liturgy was more Catholic than post vatican II Catholic.
Now, unfortunately, my ELCA Lutheran Faith has joined and endorsed the pervert parade of LBGTwhatever. And I am on the outside wondering what happened.

The usus antiquior is clearly a thorn in Francis' side. Will unity in the Church be preserved by leaving it in-place? Or by removing it? High stakes poker happening here...
May the Holy Spirit illuminate for us the way we should go, grant us the courage to go that way, and the endurance to complete the journey faithfully.

With all the troubles in the world it's odd that the Pope fixates on the small number of Parishes that want to use Latin.
