The last elected Democrat in Dorchester County, South Carolina, County Councilwoman Harriet Holman, defected to the Republican Party on Monday, stating that it had become apparent that she was not a Democrat due to her conservative views. The retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel is pro-life, pro-capitalism, and supports the police and points out that she has always stood for many of the same principles reflected in the Republican platform. She had been considering the switch for six months and finally decided it was time.Appearing on Fox News Wednesday, Holman explained her move after being asked what the final straw was for her to ditch the Democrat Party.

Sorry... he may be a "mugged liberal", but I don't trust him. Strom Thurmond defected when the Klan became bad news for the Dems, and they've used him to claim the Klan is tied to Republicans, ever since.

If she is what she claims, why was she a Democrat?

Read the article. It says “councilwoman”. She is a POC. In the article she says that she discussed changing parties with her family. Many of them are already Republicans. Most of the minorities that I know are conservatives even though their party affiliation is Democrat. First the Hispanics started trending Republican. This may be a harbinger of many more minorities switching parties.

In the article, the councilwoman explained that she was a Democrat because she was born into that party. Political affiliation is often like religious affiliation. People stick with what they know unless and until it no longer works for them. That's what happened to retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Harriet Holman.
Ms. Holman is pro-life, pro-capitalism, and anti-defund the police. She sounds good to me. I wish she were my city councilwoman here in Illinois.

It's not like elite Republicans have done a good job reaching out to Blacks, or minorities in general. While I am glad for them not pandering, they also never fight back against charges that we are racist (and all the other intolerant -ists we are called). I, along with many of us 'conservatives' appreciate Ms Holman's' thoughtful considerations in her position as councilwoman. Welcome, madame, but please be aware there are a lot of jerks on our side too.

yes, you are. Probably the most vile because you are a trojan horse. You want us to accept you and then you will destroy our party from within. Do not trust these people. She will go running back to the dems as soon as she has accomplished her goal-to harm the Repub party.

Here's a simple question. If she was so conservative, why did she run as a demoslut?

I'd like to know what basis # 6 has to reach that conclusion.
And # 7, have you ever tried to kick a bad habit?

Wow the cynicism from the previous LDotters is discouraging to say the least. This makes me happy and optimistic, more minorities undertsanding that the democRATs don't represent them - this is good. If you read the article you would know:
1. She was just following the example of her family of being a democRAT. (we all know that many minorities vote D without even thinking) see liberal Harlem now upset as native son letting crime go rampart.
And FTA: “After a year of Joe Biden in the White House and a Democrat-controlled Congress, it’s no surprise more and more people are switching to the Republican Party,” he remarked. “Between sky-high inflation, multiple foreign policy disasters, a surge at our southern border, and a spike in crime, we’ve seen the failures and crises caused by Democrat leadership on full display.”

My county in Texas went from completely Democratic to completely Republican in just four years, from 1996 to 2000. The last two Democrat elected officials to make the switch were Yellow Dog Democrats (someone who would vote for a yellow dog if it ran as a Democrat) who saw the writing on the wall and wanted to have a chance at being re-elected.

Be VERY careful here. Dems are running as Republicans just to get elected. This is one of their plans to help win elections and keep control of congress

Heck, in my county, you couldn't win an election to dog catcher if you were a Democrat and all the voters were cats.

Trojan horse. She's had years to see what her Democrats party did to this country. MI5 and the CIA don't like switch hitters, and for a good reason.
She sees the handwriting on the wall and she wants to stay on the gravy train.

You may not be a DemoRAT now, Sir, but I remain suspect because you might be a turncoat opportunist. If you sign off on a new Contract For America declaring tax cuts, no Critical Race Theory, re-funding the police, education vouchers, tax-free zones, strict Constitutional adherence to the Bill of Rights, rescinding Roe vs Wade, then maybe I'll believe you...

Before accepting her into the Republican Party, it would be a good idea to review her voting record on legislation. It would be a good idea to verify what she is saying is true and not a ploy to get reelected in November,

FTA:
“It wasn’t an easy decision. I talked to family. I talked to friends. I talked to some of my constituents. And a lot of my family members are really Republicans as well. So, was not too hard of a transition at all. And now that I’ve done it, I am very much at ease with it.
Hopefully part of a growing trend where people of color start to realize the core of the democrat party today is very liberal/progressive and non-religious.
How many liberal/progressives do you think are people of color like this woman?
I don't believe very many, thus, as she stated, “It became apparent that I am not a Democrat,” said Holman on Monday. “Nationally, the Democratic Party does not represent who I am.”

Nope, unless I knew the guy personally, and for a long time.....not a chance I'd vote for a "newly convered Republican".
Welcome him to work for a few years to prove his bona fides, then PERHAPS.....but sure as heck, now that's a hard "NO".
