More than 3,900 people are 'interested' in a Facebook event calling for Rotterdam residents to throw rotten eggs Jeff Bezos's newly built-superyacht, for which a historic Dutch bridge will be dismantled. The bill to allow the yacht to pass through being footed by the Amazon billionaire, with the £400million, 417ft (127 metre) Y721 set to be the biggest sailing yacht in the world when it is completed this year in the Netherlands, overtaking the current largest ocean-going passenger ship Sea Cloud.(Snip)'Rotterdam was built from the rubble by the people of Rotterdam, and we don't just take that apart for the pha**us symbol of a megalomaniac billionaire.

Bezos uses his newspaper to promote radical Marxism and extreme environmentalism. He also joyrides in rockets and has a yacht whose mast design can't accommodate a helicopter, so he also has a "support yacht" equipped with a helicopter landing pad that will follow the main yacht around the sea.

Two points actually, three points:
1. I don't mind that he built a mega yacht, which created great paying jobs for people in the Netherlands
2. I don't mind that he is PAYING to have the top of the bridge removed and rebuilt so that his mega yacht can pass through.
3. I DO mind that he preaches to us peasants about carbon emissions and sacrifices when he and his billionarie buddies are the biggest energy consumers on the planet -- and by far the biggest carbon emitters on the planet (and I don't mind carbon emissions -- think it's really good for the trees).

Why not just airlift his yacht over the bridge? He has the $$$ to have a few helicopters do the job and he would have a better PR profile.

Again, to the shipyard.....what sort of an idiot builds a ship yard upriver of a low bridge? And then what kind of a dimwit actually takes a commission to build a ship that it can't get to the ocean without a very expensive and seemingly unlikely dismantling of a historic bridge?
Idiots all around.

Why can't the masts be put on somewhere else? There are other shipyards with cranes that should be able to complete the work. THe ship designers should be able to figure this out.

So if I take a couple of likely out of date eggs in my refrigerator and send them over could I ask one of the protesters to throw them for me? Should be in perfect shape by the time they get there.

If you look at the Bridge the center section slides up and down to allow passage of boats. It looks to me like a pretty simple solution to just remove it for the little time it takes to pass the ship. It's not like it destroys the bridge and likely some maintenance can be done on that section while it is off
However i agree that the masts could be placed on it at another place instead of at the builders.. This is a tempest in a teapot either way.

here's a simpler idea and saves buying eggs..
have 200 Karens just sit on the bridge.. in shifts.. forever

#12, apparently the superstructure of Dr. Evil's overcompensation is higher than the bridge and the shipyard says it is not practical to sail it out while partially constructed.
Sounds to me like everyone gets what he wanted out of this: daytripper dollars from Amsterdam tourists / publicity / faux-phallis envy / karen-rage over rich guys who can buy shinola s/he can't.

According to the article, the bridge is a protected landmark that has special significance for city residents as it signifies the city's recover from WWII. And after a renovation 5 years ago, city leaders promised that it would never be dismantled again. But here comes a guy with money, so the monument is now secondary. Would Americans object to having the Statue of Liberty's arm temporarily removed to accommodate a Chinaman's vanity project? Perhaps not, as commerce is primary.

This reminds me of people building boats in their basements and then realize it won't fit through any opening out of the basement. Since it is a sailing yacht, might they remove the masts and then reinstall them down river. Usually, ship masts are designed so that they can be removed and replaced.
