Surveillance video shared on social media of a shooting inside a Spring Garden pizza shop last month appears to contradict portions of the initial account shared by police, including the assertion that the shooting victim was shot after he tried to strangle the mother of the teenager who ended up firing on him.
The 28-second video instead shows the would-be robber forcefully reaching for the register — not the cashier — in an apparent attempt to steal money. Within seconds, a 14-year-old behind the counter pulled a gun from his waistband and fired from point-blank range, the video shows.
Good on this kid. That's an awful thing for the kid to have to do. I hope he's not too scarred by the incident.

I watched the video. The teen had every right to protect his mother. How was he to know what would happen next if he wasn’t there with a gun!?! 2nd Amendment Saves Lives!

Does anyone have $100 per hour for lawyer representation and a team of 9 more lawyers ($1000 per hour - that's low balling it massively)? Remember, the robber was a nice kid, turning his life around, who sang in the choir, who just wanted to get a loaf of bread.

Like protecting your home your business is next. If the 14 y.o. had chase them outside it would have changed the charges but it was indoors. The black thieves are getting bolder but how did the police report get to be so wrong. Whose fault was that?

1. Don't normally think it's a good idea for a kid to carry, in public, a loaded gun.
2. That said, he was justified. If his mom had shot the creep, SHE'D be justified.
3. How was the 14 yr old supposed to know if said creep wasn't armed? When someone aggressively invades your space, expect the worst, and if there are multiple actors, respond with lethal force.
If the robbers had not tried to rob, they'd still be unharmed.

I strongly believe in gun control; everyone should control their gun.
Good on this kid for opening up. Give him a medal, a pat on the back and a $50 Amazon gift certificate and send him in his way.
Send a bill to the perp for the ammo.

I wish to be a little stern with some of the above commenters.
The tragedy of liberal DAs who throttle law enforcement in our nation's cities is that a lot of people who truly "shouldn't be carrying guns" -- iike this frightened kid, alone with his mom in a 'hood store -- feel they need to do so for self-protection. The police in New York admit that some truly "good kids" feel so abandoned by the Responsible Adults that they bring weapons to school for self-defense. And that includes some BIPOC kids, believe it or not.
To speculate that "this 14-yr.-old shouldn't have had a gun" obscures the relevant issue. The violent thug got what was coming to him. Bravo. It was a legitimate, quick-thinking and courageous act of self defense by the kid. The distinction between his claim that the thug was strangling his mother, instead of, as it appears, punching at her wildly in a desperate physical struggle, is nonsense. She was under deadly attack.
The kid deserves steadfast legal defense and acquittal in this instance, if not in somebody's speculation on the ultimate judgment of the Court of Heaven. Just remember all the recent caterwauling about Klyle Rittenhouse: "What was heeee doing with a GUN?"

And they're going to charge the kid. How many times do you have to be robbed before you start protecting yourself and your business. Oh, I got it, you have to wait for one of these thugs to shoot at you fist, THEN you can try and protect yourself. Total insanity....

It reads to me like the initial police report was intended to protect the kid from prosecution because the police on the scene thought he had done the right thing at the right time. Unfortunately, when higher ups (either in the police force or the DA's office, or both) saw the video, they realized that the boy had technically violated the law and they could not allow a story to be out there about someone using a gun in a positive manner.

The perp was cashiered.
This should happen every time there's an attempted robbery like this. And - - the shooter should be given a medal and a parade.

That's what you call DRT. Dead right there.
Hit the off button. Head shot from two or three feet is effective, never even twitched. Hands slowly relaxed and he dropped the fists full of money.
IMO, a perfect outcome. Lowest possible cost for this criminal being kept from ever harming anyone else again. I doubt if any jury will convict that young man on anything. He should get a medal.

Re #6, probably working the counter with his mother in a family owned and operated store would be my guess. In most places a storekeeper is permitted to be armed on premises.

Poster 16: it depends on the shooter. If he was running away wirh your money or your mom's life, it would not be justified to shoot him back, in these liberal enclaves.
Only if he's COMING at you. And only if you have no path you can retreat along.

The robber who was most shot actually survived, according to the report. The assistant robber was also injured. It looked like a violent attack from the camera angle. I can't say how much worse it looked from the kid's angle, but I would guess a lot worse.

There's been a couple of incidents lately where victims have shot the (alleged, HA!) perpetrators in several crimes across Philly. This is DA Krasner's effort to stop - or at least make people think twice - about protecting themselves from (alleged) punks.

#11, in a family business is "not in public" and in most cases shopkeepers are permitted to keep a gun for self defense. I agree with your other two points.
And, in general, 14 year olds cannot carry a gun, although when I was that age....we carried our .22 rifles all over the place -- in rural Virginia, when squirrel and rabbit hunting. And when I was 17 and 18 I often had a .22 pistol in a holster when we went armadillo hunting in my friend's open "dune buggy" sort of vehicle. And we'd often stop at the local store for a pop and snack after hunting. That was rural Florida in the 60s. Never got any comments about the gun in the holster in the store. But they knew me, I my friend well, a small town.

To those who wonder why a 14 year old IN PHILLY was carrying a pistol in his waistband, living near Philly all my life I’ll explain:
Because at 14 a SAW is kinda heavy.
