Obama’s Presidential Center Looks Like
His Ego Cast in Stone

President Barack Hussein Obama wanted a monument in Chicago, and Chicago gave him parkland, patience, tax breaks, years of disruption, and now a tower that looks less like civic memory than self-regard poured into granite. The Obama Presidential Center opens to the public June 19 in Jackson Park, a historic South Side park once shaped by Frederick Law Olmsted's vision. The Obama Foundation calls it an “awe-inspiring 19-acre campus.” Many Chicagoans can look at the same structure and see something colder. The building matches the man's politics. Obama, the 44th president, sold hope in polished speeches while leaving the country more divided than he found it. My criticism of Obama has

Funniest two sentences in the article: ''Money now adds another layer of ugliness. Contractors and subcontractors say they're owed millions as the center nears its opening. Omar Shareef, president of the African American Contractors Association, said seven subcontractors contacted him for help over missing payments: some are owed seven figures.'' What did they expect when they were dealing with a snake oil salesman? Save your money to hire some high-priced lawyers, they're the only ones that will come out on top.

I don't think the design is a mistake. I think it is meant to replicate and honor a sacred Muslim site. The object that Muslim pilgrims walk around in Mecca is called the Kaaba. It is a large, cube-shaped structure located at the center of the Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque). Muslim pilgrims come from all over the world to walk around the Kaaba counterclockwise. Look it up. Obama has purposely placed its replica here to convey the message that they are committed to conquering the U.S.

Last year when Iryna Zarutska was (allegedly — our lawyer said we have to put that until it is adjudicated) murdered on the train by DeCarlos Brown Jr., I (and countless others) wrote about the scourge of violent criminals being released to prey on innocent civilians. But I recently started looking at it from a different angle, particularly when I saw the contrast between the way the Knicks fans behaved after their team won and the Japanese did after their team’s game. It occurred to me that something bigger is going on. Not that the scourge of violent crime isn’t real,

When thinking about poor Austin Metcalf, I sometimes wonder about his reactions during those last fatal moments on April 2 of last year. When murderer Karmelo Anthony drew that knife, could he not, being young and athletic, have avoided at least a deadly strike? Perhaps Anthony was just too quick. But then I realize something: The two boys were from vastly different worlds. Austin occupied the world most of us inhabit. It’s a place where, among other things, proportionate force is instinctively understood. Sure, boys and men, being boys and men, will sometimes have physical conflict, and we understand that part of manliness is standing up for yourself.

In 1961, Hannah Arendt, already well known among the intellectual elites of America as an expert on the Nazi atrocities, was commissioned by The New Yorker to cover the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the man who had organized the logistics of the Holocaust. Eichmann had been captured the previous year in Argentina in a daring Mossad operation and smuggled out of the country so that Israel could put him on trial for his crimes. As Arendt watched the trial, she realized in horror that the smug, evil, monstrous character she had expected to see was in fact a petty, banal, and sometimes silly bureaucrat, a man of little creativity

Renewable energy groups are suing the U.S. military because they say national security reviews for new wind farms on private land have been effectively frozen for months. The groups say this logjam jeopardizes $47 billion in investments and thousands of jobs in 21 states. President Donald Trump has frequently talked about his hatred of wind power and

The Renewable Fuel Standard, or RFS, is a federal program mandating a minimum addition of "renewable" fuels to transportation fuels in the United States. These renewables can include ethanol, biodiesel, and other biofuels. The Environmental Protection Agency administers this program, created by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and revised by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The problem is, it's costing American taxpayers a lot of money at the pump. The Energy Policy Research Foundation (EPRF) has crunched some numbers on this, and the findings paint an expensive and unpleasant picture. These and the other various regulations and requirements

It is being viewed as a sign of America's weakness and a victory for the Iranian regime -- which the US defeated -- and proof that the US is eager to end conflicts at virtually any price.
