Mayor Zohran Mamdani laid out two potential paths Tuesday to close what he says is a $5.4 billion dollar budget gap in New York City. In one, Albany would raise taxes on the richest New Yorkers. In the other, the City would raise property taxes for the first time since the late 2000s. The City could generate $3.7 billion by raising the property tax by 9.5%, Mamdani said. (Snip) “If we do not go down the first path, the city will be forced down a second, more harmful path. Faced with no other choice…we would have to raise property taxes.

It is SOOO exciting to see America's wealthiest city demonstrate the foolishness of voters. Let Albany bail them out but not with my money, thank you. Y'all street is calling - yoo hoo.

Why? How can this be? He just wants to give "free stuff" to the masses. I mean if it's "free" than it's "free", right? s/o NYC I will applaud when you arrogant twits go flushing down the john. For years you have told yourselves that there was no other place on earth. And every American wanted to live in NYC. (I don't think so.) Yeah, you were something special. Be careful what you wish for you just might get it. Enjoy the suck. You deserve it. Just one tiny little thing. Stay there and be happy. Do not come running to our states to f us up like you did NYC. Truly we do not want you here. Why don't you try MN or Chicago? Colorado? Lot's of place screwed up would love to have you.

So so predictable. Hochul won’t let him rape the rich because they are her campaign donors. But he doesn’t hesitate to assault the middle class to deliver free stuff. Sad but entertaining.

Option three...do a little of Both...Raise property taxes on every property in the State of NY by 4.5%, to raise the same funding(NYC makes up approx 48% of overall state population)...but for THAT "The People" would get a chance to vote on the proposal 1st, and cast votes for/against those people that support it.
A 4th option might be...Institute a Kamaaiani sort of Program where "Non-Residents" get charged 5-30% MORE for everything, NYC city residents an politicians would of course have to be in favor of ID's that would allow residents the discounts. All options carry political risks for Dems., "Raise the temps and the Frogs will jump", some out of the city, some out of the state, some to another political party...some to another business/shopping/vacation destination.

That will drive out some more of their taxpayers. Not just billionaires but also the wealthy middle class. This will mean that taxes will have to be raised again and driving out more productive citizens..rinse and repeat.
There is going to be an outflow of blue city residents to friendlier red states but this is also a two-edged sword if they bring their moronic ideas with them. Blue leftists are not welcome here. Stay home and live with what you voted for.

I doubt they'll come to Alabama. For one, we talk funny (sorta “hickish).
For one, it’s hotter than blazes ….. and you need scuba gear to breathe through the humidity. And for one we’re just rubes and deplorables.
Alabama is not an attractive immigration destination.

There is another alternative. It's called cut spending. That, however, is not a concept a communist of privilege will ever be able to comprehend.

Mamdani did say he will use every single tool at his disposal, including seizing buildings from landlords to put them under city control, cranking up property taxes would go a long way to doing that.

There's going to be a lot of delinquent tax bills. Plus all this talk of flight, sure from the super rich but unfortunately the middle class will be stuck. Try selling your real estate when the property tax is almost as much as the mortgage. Good luck.
Oh well it won't really affect the rubes that voted for him since they don't own any property. It will perhaps be a wake up when they don't get their free stuff.

Even if the folks in Albany cave and push through a "wealth" tax, it's never enough and won't ever end - they'll continue pushing for more and more from the "wealthy".
But they will ALSO enact a property tax increase, just not the 9.5%.
Because it's never enough.

What- six weeks in, and he ALREADY ran out of Other People's Money to spend, and is demanding more.
So many applicable sayings!

-You Made your bed, now you get to Lie Down in it!
-Escape from New York USED to be a movie!
-"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."
-H. L. Mencken
They are running off the Ultra-Rich and are working on the Wealthy and the Middle Class.
As the process continues, the only ones left will be the Bureaucrats and the Gimme-Dats.
Watching from my perch, 1300 miles away in Flyover Country, it is both funny and sad to see at the same time.

So . . . let me get this straight: The mayor of one city is telling the people in another city (who are NOT under his jurisdiction) that the wealthy of this other city need to be taxed so he can have their money?
If I lived in Albany, I'd be furious, but the stupid Dim governor there will probably agree to it!

Something not mentioned in Mandami's seech; having to cut the budget by $5.4 billion. Wouldn't want to cut waste fraud and abuse in the NC budget instead of raising taxes on everyone. Cut duplication of services, city services that are already provided by the State or Feds, and review all services aid for by grants to mae sure that the grant is still current (if not, cut it). If the money does not exist, it cannot be spent.
