Russian casualties in Ukraine now match
American casualties in WWII

Both are a little north of one million. Of those, around 400,000 are deaths. (For the Ukrainians, both are a little lower, so far.) Most observers thought the Russians would overrun Kyiv in weeks. But they’ve now have been at war in Ukraine longer – four years – than America was at war in WWII. And there’s no end in sight. Recent Russian advances are measured not in kilometers, but meters. Russian troop morale is as bad as you would expect. Nobody goes to Eastern Europe for outdoor winter camping where your tentmate sleeping next to you sometimes gets blown to bits.

Who's keeping the "official" count? No matter, don't trust them. Even if what the headline says were true, the Russians haven't come anywhere near matching THEIR death toll in WWII... not by a long shot.

Putie's goose is cooked. Fighting a senseless war with alcoholic unmotivated teenage boys fresh out of russia's prison system only adds to the body count. Putie should have taken the deal Trump put in front of him. Too late now, Putie. While Z's military is nearly out of military-age men, it is too late now for Putie's conscripts to re-group.

Russia's going to win any time now. (/s) They have already lost. The price of the war is too high and even if they do win it won't matter.

Also, Russia has been fighting in Ukraine longer than the "Great Patriotic War".....WW2, against Germany.

During past wars the Russians have always sustained a massive number of both civilian and military casualties, so the Russian casualties that orders from Putin caused, and that the Russians sustained in the Ukraine, is just keeping up with the Russian tradition of taking huge numbers of casualties. That does not mean that the Russians, have lost those past conflicts, for an otherwise example look at where the Russians, then known as the USSR, ended up at the end of the Second World War, victorious in the middle of the Berlin, Germany!

And for what? Borders change all the time. Sure Russia was in Berlin in 1945 but a few decades later they are out. Ukraine was controlled by USSR for a few years then taken by Germany from 1941 to 1945 and then back to USSR until the wall fell. If they take Ukraine now, in a few years things will change.

I'm sorry, but this is a war of attrition, and Russia has about 6 times the population of Ukraine. On a per capita basis, Ukraine has lost a much higher % of their population -- including a whole generation of young fighting-age men. Ukraine's infrastructure has been dealt massive damage, with very little damage done to Russian territory. Please understand that I am not "pro Russia". But I am certainly not "pro Ukraine" either. I would not be terribly disappointed if these two useless countries wiped each other off the face of the earth. But anyone who thinks that Russia is going to "lose" this war is not looking at reality. They are not going to get the victory that they wanted when this started. But they have the capability of totally destroying Ukraine without turning to their nukes unless the rest of Europe wants to turn this into WW-III -- which, thank God, they haven't yet. But as long as 2 egomaniacs like Putin and Zelensky are running the show, this war is never going to end well for anybody. Maybe it's time we pulled a "Venezuela" on both of them, take them out of the equation, and let calmer, saner heads on both sides end this insanity!!!!

Three-quarters of a million people were killed in the American Civil War, and another half million were wounded – many grievously. That was in a country with a population of less than a tenth of today’s America. The equivalent deaths in today’s America would be about eight million. That’s something like 20x the American deaths in WWII. Much of Atlanta was burned to the ground in the Civil War, as were large sections of Charleston, Vicksburg and Richmond. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by a southern sympathizer near the end of the war, five days after General Robert E. Lee surrendered the main Confederate army.

Alex Pretti did something foolish and illegal at the protest in Minneapolis. He interfered with law enforcement agents. There will be debates for days if not years about whether his illegal interference with the cops, the discovery of his gun, and his violent resistance justified them shooting him. In considering that issue, I urge readers to consider it not from the warm comfort of their recliner while watching slow-motion videotapes interspersed with football highlights, but from the perspective of cops who are being taunted, spat upon, name-called, and threatened with being run over by organized protesters in the bitter
There’s such a thing as sex 5 replies

The 14th Amendment and the civil rights laws have long been interpreted to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. That has meant that it’s illegal to discriminate in hiring, college admissions, public accommodations, and so on, against a man for just being a man or a woman for just being a woman. Ah, if only things were still so simple. One early wrinkle in the law involved “disparate impact.” In some fields, women predominate and in other fields men do. For example, men predominate in playing chess, doing high-level mathematics, and being firefighters. Despite concerted efforts to attract more women to those fields, that continues to be the case.

OK, it’s not technically true that ski conditions right now are worse than ever. The snowpack at Colorado ski resorts today (Jan. 16, 2026) is not worse than the snowpack in, say, an average August. But for this time of year, the Colorado snowpack is officially the worst on record. That’s right, since the time they’ve been keeping records of the Colorado snowpack, this is the lowest it’s ever been for mid-January. It’s barely half the normal. The forecast for the next ten days is more of the same – warm and dry. My eyes confirm all this.

David Brooks holds himself out as a moderate Republican. I suspect, however, that the last Republican he voted for was George H.W. Bush – the senior Bush who was elected 38 years ago. Disgracefully but predictably, PBS pairs Brooks with Jonathan Capehart in a point-counterpoint format. PBS pretends that this little tête-à-tête constitutes balance – an avowed far-left gay Black man versus a faux Republican moderate who, in reality, hasn’t voted for a Republican in decades.

We don’t need to invade Greenland. We can instead buy the Greenlanders. Here’s my scheme. First, let’s review what’s at stake. Greenland is the size of Texas. It’s strategically positioned in the North Atlantic. It extends almost to the North Pole (a spot that is on ocean ice north of Greenland). We already have an air base in Greenland above the Arctic Circle which serves to provide early warning of incoming Russian missiles and bombers. And we also have our own bombers and missiles stationed there. Greenland is rich in natural resources, including petroleum, fish, fresh water, gold, lithium and rare earth metals.

Guess what these men have in common: Albert Einstein, Leo Szilard, Hans Bethe, and Edward Teller. Everyone knows about Einstein. He won a Nobel Prize for his work on the photoelectric effect, did revolutionary work on the relativity of time and space (all in his mind without a laboratory), fled Nazi Germany in 1933, had wild hair in his later years, and, most importantly, co-authored a letter to President Roosevelt explaining the potential for a nuclear bomb. That letter is credited with persuading Roosevelt to launch the Manhattan Project. The ensuing nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki put an end to WWII.

Democrat historians outnumber Republican historians by somewhere between 8 to 1 and 19 to 1. The disparity is even worse than those ratios suggest, since many of the Democrat historians are not just Democrats, but hard-left ones, while virtually none of the few Republican historians are hard-right. There’s a name for hard-left historians. They’re called “tenured professors” and we pay their salaries and give them summers off. There’s also a name for hard-right historians. They’re called “Uber drivers” and we pay their salaries, too, but they don’t get their summers off.

Colorado is a much different place from when I grew up in Colorado Springs in the 60s. That was before the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 was drilled under 11,990’ Loveland Pass. It was before the gondola at Aspen and it was before Snowmass was founded. Vail Pass was a treacherous gravel road, and the town of Vail did not exist. It was wonderful. Our family had one of those pop-up tent trailers and we went camping several times a year. Getting there was half the fun.

Part One of this series discussed the rise of Western Civilization from the Greeks and Romans. Part Two concluded with the sad realization that this Western Civilization is falling. The question for this final Part Three is, what will replace it? It won’t be Russia, “a gas station masquerading as a country,” as John McCain famously put it. McCain died before he could witness Russia proving him right by flailing and failing to conquer it’s eastern neighbor for nearly four years now, a conquering that any competent conqueror could have performed in four weeks.

Religious animal sacrifices may soon be conducted by your neighbor in his backyard on the other side of the little fence you share, or perhaps in the condo down the hall from yours. Try not to let the animal’s screams bother you — that would be racist. You see, there’s a small town in Michigan called Hamtramck. For generations, it has been an enclave of Polish immigrants and their descendants. They danced to polka music, ate pierogi, and so on. They were Polish-Americans. They blended right in — as well as our Irish-Americans and Italian-Americans and Chinese-Americans.

Instead, he has his money set on one Democrat: Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. The first, according to Carville, is whether they can “raise a lot of early money.” “Because no matter how they set it up... when it happens, it happens quickly,” Carville said in comments released Wednesday.

The stealth amnesty got a big push forward on Tuesday night when Senate Democrats and Republicans agreed to delay passage of the 2026 funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security. The DHS bill is now being held back until Senate Democrats and Republicans can include a series of apparently minor changes that would create a huge bureaucratic barrier to the deportation of non-violent illegal migrants. Newsmax streams national news programming content in taxis in a partnership with Curbed, one of the TLC’s authorized technology screen providers.
