The Evils of Capitalism

It ain’t so much the things we don’t know that — Mark Twain (attributed) What’s the one thing everyone knows about capitalism? Why, that it started out as a mean, nasty tool of greedy industrialists, of course. “The Industrial Revolution,” we all learned, was a terrible Moloch that devoured children, put profits before people, and, though it made great fortunes (or, perhaps, partly because it made great fortunes), was a wicked development. The Industrial Revolution, we’ve all been taught, was the original sin of capitalism, necessary, perhaps, to prime the engine of economic progress, but lamentable nevertheless.

Many will never realize the good of free market capitalism, until they’re living under its alternative. But we, as American citizens, don’t have to allow our nation be turned into a Petri dish for some over-educated, pointy-headed liberals’ experiments.

Name one socialist country that has better ANYTHING than we do. BTW, the so-called socialism in the early Church was due to the fact that Christians were frozen out of their culture economically, and had to pool their resources to survive.

A lot of people think capitalism is evil and wealth is sinister. God doesn't. He freely gives us gifts and talents and He abhors greed. We must use our wealth in His ways. . .

Excellent article, even if a little deep at points. What is amazing to me is that the truth and success of capitalism has been proven over and over and yet the stupidity of the average person fails to see its enormous value because THEY, personally are not Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. These people, most of whom live in a comfortable home, have a car or two, have good food on their table, can go on enjoyable vacations, have access to all sorts of things to buy, have their kids educated for free, get their roads maintained for free, can have (with a little care) a comfortable retirement, ... do not "GET" that capitalism is the source of ALL of it. For all this largesse, they only have to dedicate about 24% of their time each week (8 hours x 5 days) to earn enough to pay for it. Farmers used to get up before sunrise and work long after sunset to "have" FAR less and a bad year for crops could mean disaster and ruin. For many, advanced education and willingness to accept more responsibilities leads to much more lavish lifestyles. Countries that embrace capitalism are successful and well off. Countries that do not exist in poverty. The people that attack capitalism are either power hungry, evil, or grossly stupid. The reality that we keep revisiting the "evils of capitalism" is disheartening and foolish.

Good article. But the point that the Dow has risen from 700 to over 40,000 says more about the debasement of our currency than about wealth creation. Also, the Dow keeps replacing failing companies with up and coming new companies to puff it up.

A scholarly article in praise of Capitalism. Marxist ideology, that brought over 100 million deaths in the past century, gets all the good history defenses. This is because the main focus of Marxists is to destroy Greco-Roman-Christian civilization and independent Nation States. Marxists build nothing, Capitalism generates the wealth of Nations. Trump is translating capitalism into contemporary economic growth.

Poster #12, I worked in one of those Carnegie libraries -- in Bayonne, NJ -- great institution. I remember reading that Andrew Carnegie said something to the effect that it was a sin for a man to die with a lot of money. He thought that the rich should give away most of what they earned to worthy causes before they died. If they don't give the money away, someone else will control it, and who knows what they will spend it on.

America has the epitome of capitalism. Even low level employees can have a decent life. However it is a competitive environment. You have to develop the education and skills that employers need to be hired and move up the ladder. Unfortunately, many people do not gain the needed education and skills, for many reasons. Having poor parents is one. These are many of the people who end up on welfare, which basically, is socialism.

#3 France (though arguably they are not pure socialist). Their food and wine industry. It is healthier, produced with more regenerative farming methods, traditional food products and the time honored methods are preserved and celebrated and they genuinely care about their farmers and the people they feed. Unless you are buying local/specialty here in the States, you get nothing like that anywhere. There it is just how food is. Fine, the growth from an agrarian society to an industrial society brought on by capitalism and the innovation it fostered has indeed raised the standard of living and done many many good things. And had quality of goods and pride in workmanship been sustained and the all mighty buck not taken precedence over human beings, I would have no gripe. BUT we moved from an industrial society to a service based society in this country. We make NOTHING anymore and that makes us incredibly vulnerable on so many fronts. Unfettered multinational conglomerate capitalism is bad.. sorry it just is. That is what shipped our jobs overseas, that is what shipped all our production overseas and all to enrich the C suite and the stock holders. And everything you buy from Amazon or a big box store is crap and lasts half as long as it used to.. and that is on purpose. Planned obsolescence is a business model no one should be proud of or could be really. It means that freezer that used to last 20 years now lasts 10... but it doesn't cost half as much. The cheap pop culture based fashion industry means the clothes we buy are "out of style" in a year or if made in some 3rd world hell hole they fall apart in that same time. You have to actually hunt for shoes, purses, and bags made of real leather now (and not some cheap petroleum product) and leather goods cost 2-3xs as much. I was shocked when we were in Greece last month at the wonderful leather goods made right there in Greece and the prices were so reasonable for high quality items from companies and craftsmen that actually take pride in their work. This was the case here in the States when I was a kid. I still have tailored name brand garments from my late mil's closet that are as sturdy today as they were 50 years ago when she bought them and she wore them for years. I miss the real Made in America that unfettered Capitalism has done it's darndest to destroy.

The term “capitalism” has been so thoroughly desecrated by Marx, et al., the system is plagued by its title. Free markets, free commerce, free enterprise; these terms seem to get to the root of the advantages more easily.

A group of 50 government workers wrote a letter claiming that the laptop was Russian disinformation. Liberal National Public Radio refused to even cover the story. All because the story could have jeopardized Joe Biden's winning of the 2020 presidential election. “The story was true,” Jennings said. “There wasn’t really any dispute of that, other than from these 50 people who come from government,

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a euphemism for a rigid racialist theology. It deductively postulates that a large percentage of the population is oppressed by racism and sexism, mostly by white males. DEI makes no allowance for the class or wealth of the alleged victims or their supposed victimizers. So once that rigid party line is set, it cannot account for tens of millions of affluent and privileged non-white Americans or like numbers of poor and non-privileged whites. Absurdities and ridicule must then follow. One example is the spectacle of former First Lady Michelle Obama on her current book tour.

Thursday’s jobs report suggests the US economy is much stronger than expected — but California lags behind the rest of the nation. Delayed over six weeks by the government shutdown, the report showed that the US economy created 119,000 jobs in September. That blew away economists’ consensus prediction of just 50,000, since summer months usually see slow job growth. Sure seems a sign “the Trump economic policies are actually working,” as Vice President JD Vance put it. Not so, the progressive economic policies of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s California.

Rubio, Witkoff, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, Jared Kushner and several other US officials huddled in Geneva on Sunday with Ukraine’s delegation to go over the blueprint to end the war in what was reportedly a tense meeting at times.
