This one, among the nation’s longest sustained appropriation lapses, has disrupted daily life less than others. Unlike during the Obama years, we don’t see the National Park Service closing off monuments or blocking scenic highway overlooks with traffic cones for dramatic effect. But many important missions are impacted. I learned yesterday that the Religious Liberty Commission’s work has been classified as non-essential, so it has been paused. As always, however, the Department of War is deemed an essential agency.

The fight over the shutdown is coming to a head this week as Democrats appear ready to cave after one of their biggest union backers, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), called for the Democrats to end the shutdown by supporting a Republican stopgap money bill, passed in the House last month, that would fund the government until at least the Thanksgiving holidays. Years ago, when the program was still called ‘food stamps’ it was seen as something that struggling families might use temporarily to get through a hard time.
