I was one of those many, many retired officers who thought it was great when Pete Hegseth walked in and told an assembly of hundreds of generals and admirals that they suck and are fat, and they needed to unsuck and get unfat. Well, he was a little more polite than that, but not much. Of course, when their subordinates screw up in a massive way like these generals and admirals have over the last three decades, these generals and admirals would not have sugarcoated it. There would be no talk of feelings, no hugging. They would nuke their delinquent subordinates until they glowed. Some of the flag officers—

I did 20 years in the military and am a frequent critic, but this is punishing the wrong people. The problem is not fat people. I worked for and with a few, and they performed admirably. No, the problem is orders and policies from people who will never have to risk one hair on their heads. That includes high ranking officers and politicians trying to make brownie points with the woke and equality crowds. The US hasn't been interested in winning wars since 1945, and anyone who tries to do so will be stopped.

One of the choicest phrases: 'back-biting, be-medaled, bitter buffoons with stars on their shoulders' it's poetic!

I was parked at an auto parts business, In rolls a Generals staff car, he gets out and rams his door into my fender. He looked and started to walk away. I said, Where in the hell do you think you are going. He said, My Driver will help you. My reply, No he will not, don't dump your crap work on a subordinate, I want ALL your information including insurance so you can pay to fix my car. He didn't like it but Having been in the Army for 3 years, 1 in Viet Nam, I knew that some Generals were ultra Arrogant. He ended up paying out of his pocket because their insurance denied coverage when I told them what happened. Karma ran over the General!

Of all the generals I have known (and I find it amazing that I have known more than a few - RA, NG and USAR), only one actually lost weight when he retired. When I commented on that, he said:
"I'm not stuck sitting behind a desk anymore." (He also grew a beard; I told him he looked like a pirate.)
Only flag officer I physically saw that I was sure was overweight, was an admiral, but I don't know what their height/weight standards are.

My father was an admiral, long ago, and he was NEVER fat, and never had any facial hair. And he would probably be far harder on the current crop of flag clowns than Hegseth is. But, he joined the Navy in WW2 and served with a generation of REAL warfighters. He retired nearly 50 years ago, when the flag officers were still really serious people.

Remember how crime rates plummeted in NYC under Rudy Giuliani when he focused on ending low-level street crime, such as the squeegee guys? The same is true with making an issue of basic issues of military discipline like facial hair and conditioning.

This 22 year Navy veteran really appreciated this excellent article. One phrase stood out for me:
"An undisciplined force is a force that will fail in battle." Without discipline a military unit is nothing more than a gang of misfits, searching for a challenge to lose.

#10, and more so for the Army.
I think it was James A. Michener that commented on the difference in the bravery of the sailor and the soldier. The sailor makes his decision when he gets on the ship. After that, he goes where the ship goes. OTOH, the soldier makes his decision with every step he takes.
I takes discipline to keep walking to the front, and then not running away.

I gotta go with Schlichter on this one! Look at all the great Generals of History, Eisenhower, Patton, McArthur, Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Grant, Washington...
Thee guys paid more attention to their Job rather than their mess hall!
