Trump Proved ‘Experts’ Wrong About Tariffs

Original Article

Last April, Paul Krugman wrote the following about the reciprocal tariffs President Trump had just announced: “This is a much bigger shock to the economy than the infamous Smoot-Hawley tariff of 1930.” Krugman trotted out that trite analogy not because he really believed Trump’s tariffs were comparable to Smoot-Hawley, but because he knew his Substack subscribers would vaguely recall reading about the latter in high school and feel intelligent. Six months later it’s blindingly obvious that Trump was right about the tariffs and Krugman’s portentous predictions were utterly moronic.

I have never considered Krugman an "Expert" on anything. I'm suprised he didn't trot out the 1925 trope on buggy whip maker's endangered jobs as well. You can take anything Krugman predicts and there's a better than 80% chance that the exact opposite will happen.

"Krugman’s portentous predictions were utterly moronic" Krugman has become more frenzied since Trump was reelected. Most of his screed has spittle all over it. This is also a condemnation of the Nobel group for giving this dope a participation trophy.

The "experts" have been wrong most of the time. We need new experts. Academics like Krugman who have no real world experience can spew their theories and award each other prizes for their theories (that only work in the controlled world of academia); but they will still be wrong.

1. Prices will skyrocket - Didn't happen 2. Maufacturing supply chains will be disrupted - Didn't happen 3. Tariff wars will break out - Didn't happen. There is NO basis in economics for these prediction. Especially in case of a global giant of the size of the US. All these forecasts were politically motivated. And they bit the dust. This is not just luck or chance. It was bound to happen.

The objective of the tariffs was to protect American manufacturing, not to raise money off of the tariffs. At the outset it was understood that tariffs would cause some increase to inflation. The fact that the increase has been minimal was definitely a nice outcome.

This is when media misfits, such as MSNBC, should be required to bring back "experts," such as "Nobel Economist," Paul Krugman (also of Enron fame), to have his nose rubbed in his error for 30 minutes on air. The worst thing ever to happen to Washington DC was the rise of the "expert class."

The "what about eggs?" argument lasted a few weeks. The "what about gasoline?" lasted a little longer due to state taxes. Cars will come around soon once October sales fall flat and people realize what government overenthusiastic safety regulations have done to their cars. The Walmartians don't seem to be complaining about the price of chips but then they don't pay for them with their own money anyway.

The list is staggering, really. And one need not go back to January to compile a collection of the most anti-democratic behavior and positions possible, all to save muh democracy. I can fill out this column with stuff just since Friday. In June of this year, The United States Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision in Mahmoud V. Taylor, in favor of parents objecting to sexually explicit LGBT material being used in school on religious exemption grounds. The case overturned the decision against both the rights of parents and the 1st Amendment's freedom to practice religion by a district court judge nominated early in Joe Biden's term.

Remember how many Democrats called in vain for the resignation of former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam when his penchant for performing in blackface was discovered in 2019? Among the most vocal was Abigail Spanberger, who then represented the Commonwealth’s 7th District in Congress. Now, as the Democratic candidate in Virginia’s 2025 gubernatorial contest, Spanberger is oddly reluctant to call for the withdrawal of her party’s vile nominee for Attorney General — Jay Jones. Evidently, musing about the murder of a GOP lawmaker is not as disturbing as a Halloween get up.

By now, you are likely familiar with the story of Jay Jones, the terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad candidate for Attorney General of Virginia. Beege wrote about the emerging scandal yesterday, and chances are good that there will be enough twists and turns to the story that you will read quite a bit more about it over the next few days or weeks. For those unfamiliar with the breaking story, the short version is this: Virginia Delegate Jay Jones is running for Attorney General in Virginia and has a comfortable (if hopefully temporary) lead in the race against incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares this November.

merica’s propaganda press have wound up with egg on their faces a few many times over the past several years. And that could not be truer than when it comes to the military recruitment crisis that helped define Joe Biden’s failed presidency. On Monday, the Associated Press published a report revealing that the U.S. Marine Corps has reached its recruiting targets for the 2025 fiscal year. The achievement follows in the footsteps of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, all of which hit their FY2025 goals months ahead of schedule.

On Saturday, the Des Moines school board placed Roberts on paid administrative leave while protesters demand his release. ICE says Roberts is not only an illegal alien from Guyana who was working illegally, but also that he fled arrest in a school district-owned car and was in illegal possession of a loaded gun and hunting knife when agents finally nabbed him. The Virginia gubernatorial race between Republican Winsome Earle-Sears and Democrat Abigail Spanberger has already been won by the latter if one takes the polls seriously. Yet, actual ballots cast during the first week of early voting suggest that the electorate is ignoring the polls. Early voting for the 2025 general election began on September 19 and, according to the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP), turnout is twice what it was in 2021 and it has been particularly high in heavily Republican areas of the Commonwealth. This is remarkably similar to the early voting pattern that prevailed last year.

Joe Biden's post-presidency has been rough, to put it mildly. Nearly nine months after Donald Trump reclaimed the White House, Biden is holed up in Wilmington, Delaware, grappling with a reality that must feel like political exile. He's dealing not just with the sting of losing power, but also the inability to sell access and enrich his family. Though he won’t admit to the latter. The irony couldn’t be thicker. After years of attacking Trump and using the Justice Department in a desperate bid to put his successor behind bars, Biden now finds himself being told by his own advisers to stay quiet and act like a traditional ex-president.

During a recent interview on Marc Maron's podcast, the failed former president touted James Talarico, the Texas state lawmaker running for U.S. Senate, as a "terrific, talented young man." Democrats haven't been this excited about a U.S. Senate candidate in Texas since Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke, who lost his race in 2018 but also managed to impress Obama with his terrific talents. Talarico won praise from Democrats earlier this year by going on Joe Rogan's podcast. He parlayed that appearance into a U.S. Senate campaign and fawning headlines, such as

Hillary Clinton heaped some rare praise on her former arch-enemy Donald Trump for his handling of the Gaza peace deal in a recent interview. “I really commend President Trump and his administration,” Clinton told CBS News 24/7 Friday. “As well as Arab leaders in the region, for making the commitment to the 20-point plan and seeing a path forward for what’s often called the day after,” she added. Clinton’s comments came just a day after Hamas agreed to Trump’s peace plan in a stunning move that is expected to end the two year war that’s ravaged the Gaza Strip.

The same official who helped block a basic citizenship question in 2018, John M. Abowd, then the Census Bureau’s Chief Scientist, pushed through a new, opaque methodology in 2020 called differential privacy. The new system deliberately injected mathematical noise into every block count in America, turning the census from a headcount into a model with knobs. The knob that mattered most was a single parameter, epsilon, a secrecy shroud known only to a small inner circle.
