California has designated Diwali — popularly known as the “Festival of Lights” — as an official statewide holiday.
Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation, Assembly Bill 268, into law on Monday, which will go into effect in January 2026. First introduced by Democratic California State Assembly members Ash Kalra and Darshana Patel, it will authorize public schools and community colleges to close in observance of Diwali and also allow employees and students to take time off to recognize the holiday, according to the bill’s text.

Per Wikipedia (the bastion of useless info), Diwali celebrates the goddess of wealth.
I guess Brylcream finds no irony.

It is a Hindu holiday. The kids can't read, write or do math but the schools will be sure to focus like a laser on studying why this is so important.

California should allow students to take every day off. They would be better educated.

Is this the one where we make paper balloons with a candle in them? When they are lit they float up into the air and fly away? Very beautiful. I can't wait.

Maybe he's catering to the Hindu H1-B engineers. Even though there's a low legal limit to how many H1-Bs a company can hire, AFAIC, hi-tech companies blatantly violate it. Maybe Bryl Cream is appealing to the illegal H1-B Hindu engineers for their (illegal) vote.

At least it wasn't Holi where everyone throws colored water and powder on each other. Maybe we should have holidays for Pie Day (3/15), Star Wars Day (3/4), and, one of my favorites (6/3) Billy Joe McAllister Day.

I was overseas a few years ago during Diwali. A friend and Indian local in the area took me to the Indian part of town where they were celebrating.
Hard to say how many but definitely tens of thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of people packed the streets should to shoulder to visit the temples which were all lit for the event.
It was very pretty, perfectly peaceful, the food was great, but make no mistake, this is 100% a fully religious holiday which the state has no business being involved in.
Just more California leftist virtue signaling. If he could cancel Christmas he would do it on the grounds of separation of church and state.

Maybe all those Indian big rig drivers will stay off the roads that day. It would save lives.
One of my other gripes is calling for a tech support question on a computer or any other order question and getting an Indian who I can barely understand and have to repeatedly ask them what they said.
We need to be more proactive and write those companies and tell them why we will no longer buy from them.

Silicon Valley engineers are at least 60% Indian. I was often the only non-Indian in a meeting of 10-20 attendees. We had Diwali celebrations at work every year. Lots of fun, good food, everyone wearing colorful clothes. It was fine. At least Hinduism is an actual religion, unlike Islam which is something else.
