The most destructive inferno in Los Angeles history, which charred a devastating path through Pacific Palisades and Malibu in early January, was a rekindling fire that an Uber driver intentionally set days earlier near a popular hiking area, federal investigators alleged.
Authorities on Wednesday also announced the arrest of 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht, who is suspected of setting the initial fire on New Year’s Eve. Rinderknecht, of Florida, was charged with maliciously starting what eventually became the Palisades fire. Among the evidence that was collected from his digital devices was an image he generated on ChatGPT depicting a burning city, said U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli.

Federal press releasee re complaint:
LOS ANGELES – A former Pacific Palisades resident now living in Florida has been arrested on a federal criminal complaint charging him with maliciously starting what eventually became the Palisades Fire of January 2025, one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history, the Justice Department announced today.
Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, a.k.a. “Jonathan Rinder,” and “Jon Rinder,” of Melbourne, Florida, is charged with destruction of property by means of fire. He was arrested Tuesday and is expected to make his initial appearance today in United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
“The complaint alleges that a single person’s recklessness caused one of the worst fires Los Angeles has ever seen, resulting in death and widespread destruction in Pacific Palisades,” said Acting United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “While we cannot bring back what victims lost, we hope this criminal case brings some measure of justice to those affected by this horrific tragedy.”

Was it his fault the hydrants were dry, was it his fault the DEI Fire Chief was MIA. He may have started the fire, but lack of fighting it was a feature, not a bug

Long story in order to make it seems like it wasn't the Mayor's and DEI lead LAFD's fault.

Maybe it's cynicism rearing it's ugly head but when it comes to fires being set, especially in Cali, I always think there's more to the story. Was this guy solicited, groomed, and paid to set it? Just wondering....

#6 nails it.
This also absolves the electric company or any other deep pocket they could find, it seems.
Despite this, only 2 permits to build have been issued in the Palisades fire area.
Never forget that the bureaucrats will not give up their little power centers and will push everyone through the grinder to re-build their home regardless what the mayor or anyone else proclaimed that the process would be streamlined.

Had to go to the Hindustan Times to learn that he's a Democrat and contributed to Biden.
Although, I'm mystified as to why a liberal would torch a deep blue city. I suspect that he's "special".

I'm glad they caught the instigator. But a trial will drag on for years. Justice is a long ways off.

Yes, #3. Color me skeptical. This is CA. They want projects to begin building the low income housing. They have their suspect, have built a case and who knows how much of that is true. The Governor and Mayor wants to move on after today hoping the story fades from the press.

Set the 8th aside - the one dealing with cruel and unusual punishment. This m'fer needs to be eaten alive by fire ants.

i don't buy this. we watched a lot lot lot of footage.
1 video featured locals surrounding a male who looked hispanic, holding a gas can.
as i heard it, the locals brought this man to the police, empty gas can and all, supposedly.
later on, the reports are he was released. we blamed the governmental dingbats. still do.

The LA Fire Department is at fault in my opinion. Run by two Lesbians that make $800,000 each, they put out the fire Jan1st, Cleared the area Jan 2d but fire in the roots of the brush was left un inspected. The fire hydrants were dry. The Santa Ynez reservoir was dry. I spent 6 hours putting down hot spots with a garden hose before night fell and had to evacuate. I did nor see a single firefighter or fire engine during that time, but all 3 fire stations in the area were saved. Our beautiful ocean view home burned to ashes the next morning. Three weeks before Jan 7 the thieves of State Farm cancelled my 39 year fire insurance, and it was legal. In a Catch-22 we could not qualify for Fair Plan insurance because our roof was over 25 years old. Los Angeles has become a jungle in the hands of these Marxists. The housing projects that Karen Bass and Governor Nocanread Newsom-Pelosi are going to build will likely be for the low-income Ilegal Aliens they so vigorously defend.

The investigation was unbelievable. Set on a ridge on New Year's Day, it simmered underground until the high winds a week later stirred it up and it became tthe Palisades Fire. Called a holdover fire.it was the Lachman Fire. He was an Uber driver who had just dropped off a rider in the Palisades. He was fascinated with fire, obsessed with a kusic video that shdowed a city burning fdown. We know what failures occured at the local and state level, but this is the guy who set it.
