Chinese officials and state media reacted with sputtering outrage after Ukrainian President Voldoymyr Zelensky said the Russia-allied communist tyranny was not welcome as part of the prospective coalition that will secure Ukraine’s postwar borders. “Why isn’t China one of the security guarantors? We don’t need guarantors that don’t help Ukraine. Beijing assisted Russia by opening access to the drone market,” Zelensky said during a meeting with journalists on Thursday. “We don’t need guarantors who don’t help Ukraine, and didn’t help Ukraine at the moment when we really needed it. We need security guarantees only from those countries that are ready to help us,” Zelensky said.

LOS ANGELES — Lyle Menendez was denied parole Friday, a day after his younger brother Erik received the same recommendation by a California state board.
Their separate hearings this week come nearly 30 years after the brothers were convicted of first-degree murder for the 1989 killings of their parents. They were sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996.

The Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration is playing a role in the sharpest decline in monthly remittances to Mexico in more than a decade, analysts say.
According to numbers released this month from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), income from remittances abroad stood at $5.2 billion in June, a 16.2 percent decrease compared with June 2024.

This week the FBI conducted a seven- or eight-hour raid on former National Security Advisor John Bolton’s home and his office. (Unlike raids such as those the Biden administration conducted against Trump, his employees, advisors, and associates, no press was alerted and engaged, so reports are from bystanders who videotaped it on their cell phones.) Is the raid on John Bolton’s home retribution? Revival of a dormant case against him for mishandling national security? Something more sinister?
I don’t know why anyone is giving George Conway a platform anymore, but for some reason he appeared on the latest episode of The Bulwark’s podcast. Naturally, he served up one of the wildest, most paranoid rants you’ll ever hear outside of an MSNBC broadcast.

A few years ago, on the way home from a road trip, my wife and I stopped at a Cracker Barrel along the highway. The kids had never been to one, and we wanted to share with them one of our favorite childhood experiences. Needless to say, we were disappointed. It took forever to get our food. And when it finally arrived, the food wasn’t just bad. It was downright awful. The waiter, bless his heart, was a space cadet.
On the way out, our kids asked in genuine befuddlement why we talked the place up so much.
At least four people are dead, including a child, and 19 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago during the weekend, according to police. The ages of the victims range from 5 to 48. In the first shooting of the weekend, a 33-year-old woman was driving just before 7 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 66th Street when she suffered a gunshot wound to her right eye. Police said an unknown suspect inside a black vehicle fired multiple gunshots in the victim's direction and then fled in an unknown direction.
