The “Front Range” of the Colorado Rocky Mountains stretches a few hundred miles from Wyoming to New Mexico. It’s where the plains meet the mountains. It’s high plateaus of grasslands, gnarly ponderosa pines and sandstone bluffs. It’s anchored by 14,107-foot Pikes Peak, named in honor of the 1806 expedition to the region led by explorer Zebulon Pike. “Pikes Peak or Bust” was the slogan of intrepid gold rush pioneers making their way across the Great Plains to Cripple Creek and other gold camps west of Colorado Springs. Those early gold rushers traveling on foot, horses and wagons were able to see Pikes Peak

The article gave a fair description. I lived in CO, on the high plains, (with great mt. views.) for a number of years, as a kid, and then when I had kids. Then deluge of people started pouring in. It was still great and they had every right to be there. The state flipped to liberal, not good. Then taxes shot up and water started becoming rare and crime started shooting up. The cartel spreading quickly from Greeley to Ft Collins and south. Sad, beautiful place. I'm going to say a special prayer for Mr. Malone. Thanks for posting.

I live in Colorado Springs and drive I-25 at least once a week to a south Denver suburb. When you get north past Monument, it’s beautiful scenery almost all the way to Castle Rock. The place where they want to build the Buc-ee’s is accessed by one exit - County Line Road. It’s inadequate for an enterprise that size. That place would be an eyesore, and cause traffic jams in both directions. It’s a bad idea, and that’s a view shared by liberals and conservatives alike. In the past twenty years, a lot of the wrong kind of people have moved to Colorado, and they’ve damn near ruined it. A Buc-ee’s would be more of the same. Thank God for the owner of Greenland Ranch.

Reply 2: You're proving the point of the column. People are failing to judge whether this is a good place to put a 60-pump gas station/convenience store. Instead they're making a decision based on pure tribalism.

I had heard a lot about Buc-eee's and on a recent trip to Florida , i stopped at the one in Florence just off Rt. 95. To be honest I was unimpressed. I think it had 100 gas pumps, it had lots of things inside with a Buc-eee's label on them and a price that was very generous to Buc-ee's. I tried their sandwich, it was edible, and i bought their beaver nuggets, those I liked. On I-95 there is a large truck stop, that has Buc-ee's beat by a mile and there used to be a place called JR's,now JR's was a real great stop, but it's gone. IMO Buc-eee's is a tourist trap not going out of the way for,but if it's on your rt. stop for the beaver nuggets, nothing else they have is worthy of a stop.

FTA: "Like many conservatives, he’s no environmentalist ". Indeed, liberals are"environmentalists". Has he forgotten that "environmentalism" is a cover for communist control? The left doesn't care about the environment. Every where you go, the left leaves a trail (and mountain) of trash. Can't forget to mention they enjoy setting cities ablaze. Aside from the Buc-ee's debate, the author needs to get a reality check on the true nature of "environmentalism".

The Republicans finally did something great that I thought they never would have the stones to do. They reduced the funding for the government-controlled media outfit called The Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Hallelujah! CPB was established half a century ago with the good intention of providing television and radio services to rural America in a day long before cable TV and megawatt radio stations made television and radio ubiquitous, and long, long before the internet made them obsolete. Fine.

After losing to the one guy they were certain they could beat, Democrats are making a show of puzzling over how to win elections. It’s not really much of a puzzle. They simply need to get on the right side of some easy 80/20 issues. Like illegal immigration. Like men competing in women’s sports. Like catching and punishing criminals. Like the First Amendment. Like disclaiming Marxism. Why can’t the Democrats see this? Well, they can. Democrats are just pretending they can’t because they don’t want to alienate . . . Democrats.

The first to say that was Julius Caesar. After his crushing win over a Persian/Greek king in what is now Turkey, Caesar reported to the Roman Senate with characteristic immodesty and uncharacteristic brevity: “Veni, vidi, vici.” I came, I saw, I conquered. Caesar had a flair for drama. He similarly came, saw and conquered most of Gaul – what is now France – in an era well before the invention of B2 stealth bombers. Travelling from Rome to Gaul was an arduous multi-month sea and land adventure. Conquering the barbarians there was a crazy idea for anyone but Caesar.

Girls don’t usually fight. There are sound reasons for this – reasons of general decorum, biology, hormones, jewelry, dresses and hairdos. But when they do, boy oh boy, it can be a doozy. It happened yesterday at the Supreme Court. The case was an appeal of a district court order issuing a “universal injunction” against President Trump’s executive order seeking to abolish “birthright citizenship.” Birthright citizenship is the kind you get if you’re born in America even if your parents are here illegally. The 14th Amendment seems to provide for it, although there is a non-frivolous argument that it does not.

CNN last week got their hands on a classified document stolen from the National Security Agency. That’s a felony punishable by ten years in prison, by the way. The stolen document guessed that the efforts by Israel and America to neutralize Iran’s nuclear weapon program had set back the program by only “a few months.” CNN and the rest of the media cabal could hardly contain their glee. They celebrated the failure of America and Israel. Hardly mentioned in CNN’s report was that the document itself noted that its conclusions were merely “preliminary” and were expressed with only “low confidence.”

In what is already being called “The 12-Day War,” the bad guys have surrendered. It took a bit longer than its namesake, The Six-Day War, but it was every bit as heroic. Israel beat an opponent that outnumbered it nine to one. An opponent that was on the verge of nuclear weapons to make good on its decades-old threat to obliterate Israel from the River to the Sea. An opponent that has fomented terrorism throughout the Mideast. An opponent that militarily, financially and logistically supported the horrible October 7 pogrom, a slaughter of unspeakable cruelty.

You’ll recall that a federal judge in California ruled against Trump in the dispute over his use of the National Guard to protect federal buildings in Los Angeles from rioters who demand a permanent open border. That judge happened to be the 83-year-old semi-retired little brother of 86-year-old liberal retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. Big Brother must have been so proud. First, a word about federal judges that most people are not aware of. Federal judges can go on “Senior Status” as they get old.

This war has been distinctly one-sided so far. It’s been all Israel and no Iran. But we won’t know for days or weeks how successful the Israeli Defense Forces were in their main objective of disabling Iran’s nuclear weapon program. Israel says it intends to pound Iran for two weeks. If that pounding entails anything like the strikes yesterday which involved about 200 aircraft, and if Iran’s air defenses don’t improve (in fact, they are apt to deteriorate even more from the bombings) then Iran could be crippled for decades. I’m all for it. But here are some known unknowns:

Elon Musk – a man I admire greatly but not unreservedly – used ketamine. It’s not just a rumor. He wrote about it in a series of posts on what was then Twitter. Ketamine is a manufactured drug that was originally designed as an anesthetic, and is still used for that purpose. However, it was noticed some years ago that in doses much lower than the anesthetic dose, it produces hallucinations. The effect is similar to that of other hallucinogenic drugs like LSD or naturally-occurring psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”). Ketamine, LSD, psilocybin and many other hallucinogens are thought not to be physically addictive

If you’re the media, you call it a “mostly peaceful protest.” Normal people might call it an “insurrection.” But “insurrection” is not quite right, either. “Insurrection” implies a violent revolt against the government by its own citizens, not violence by uninvited foreigners who refuse to leave. I suppose you could call it a riot, but when its foreigners claiming ownership of the land, it’s a bit more than that. So, the question remains: What do you call it when foreigners: illegally enter the country, refuse our requests that they leave, assert ownership over the land, attack our people, places and government, under the colors of their foreign flag while burning the American flag,

Mamdani’s support appears to have dropped 14 percentage points from less than a week ago, based on a previous poll, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa’s surged 12 percent. Mamdani shocked the political world by winning the Democratic primary, defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He now faces Sliwa and Cuomo, as well as current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, in the general election. Cuomo and Adams are both running as independents, assuming they each decide to stay in the race.

This week, the legacy media’s obsession with dragging President Donald Trump into the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein stooped to a shameful new low. The Wall Street Journal embarrassed itself with a hyped-up Trump-Epstein “bombshell” that amounted to nothing more than a birthday card that Trump supposedly sent to Epstein in 2003. Curiously, the evidence in this bombshell is under wraps, but Trump denies writing and threatened to sue over the bogus report. Attorneys have now filed that lawsuit. This latest smear attempt is just another chapter in the media’s ongoing effort to tie Trump to Epstein, despite the lack of evidence and Trump’s documented decision to ban Epstein from Mar-a-Lago.
