The public does not like President Donald Trump’s plan to sell “Gold Card” citizenships to wealthy foreigners, according to a Rasmussen poll.
The Gold Card plan is strongly supported by only 22 percent of likely voters, including just 38 percent of Republicans, according to the February 27 to March 3 poll of 1,180 likely voters.
The plan to sell Gold Cards for $5 million is strongly opposed by 33 percent of all respondents, including 36 percent of “moderates.”
Overall, the plan is strongly or somewhat backed by 41 percent and opposed by a plurality of 47 percent.
That opposition matches the national mood, which is increasingly opposed

Soooo...many of those who may be opposed to this most likely have no problem with a penniless migrant crashing our border and living off the American taxpayer but DO have a problem with a wealthy migrant, probably an entrepreneur, crashing our border who will pay INTO the tax base and in many cases invest in America and create many job opportunities for those who actually want to work. Citizenship, a small price to pay for actually contributing to society.

In general I'd rather have rich people around than poor ones. And really, whats the difference between this and bribing public officials to fast track citizenship?
I still dont like it. It just smells wrong.

I can understand the basic American hostility to the idea of rich foreign asshats getting an easy ride, but better them than indigent foreign trash getting a free ride... for life courtesy of the American tax payer. The rich foreign asshats, ugly as they may be, are assets with their assets, to the U S.

It may be a smart idea but the subject of new immigrants turns me off entirely after what we’ve been through over the last 25 years with millions pouring in illegally, radically changing
the delicate microsystems that communities create. A strict return to sponsorship, in which a U.S. citizen must take responsibility for any debts or crimes that an immigrant for whom they advocated has accrued, is needed but only after a period of time to recover from nearly 3 decades of abuse.

How many would change their minds if they knew there is already a program in place to buy a green card? Ever hear of the EB-5 program which allows foreign nationals to obtain a U.S. green card by investing in a U.S. business that creates or preserves a specified number of jobs? All Trump is proposing is set a high price that has to be paid up front, no tricks.

Why is anyone surprised by this. The rich have and always will be exempted from the drudgery that hourly wage earners endure. You can buy an ezypass at Disney World that catapults you to the head of the line.
Every country on earth will grant you citizenship, on the spot, if you pony up the right amount of cash. Even this one.
Trump is proposing a "gold" green card for a substantial fee.

It's a bad idea.
This is where we find out if the government still listens to public opinion. Our government is hard up for cash!
Probably billions of dollars that can be pocketed and given to their cronies is at stake. Maybe they will even throw a few scraps at paying down the debt.

If someone has $5 mil laying around for this they can get in the country by other means. Why not make it easier for them and make $5 mil in return.

It's pay for play. Just make corporate taxes competitive and the oligarchs will come voluntarily.

Reply #22 is correct. Trump is merely proposing to replace a program which rich foreigners gamed by promising job-creating investments which they often never actually made. Get the money up front and use it to pay down the National Debt.

Friends from SC with no more relatives here in US, moved permanently to Portugal and had to have papers showing they had at least $800K cash and a certain amount of additional monthly income.
They had considered Costa Rico too…

Many countries have minimum income and asset requirements in order for your to move there. They don't accept everyone who decides that they want to move to their country. They must prove that they can support themselves and have a continuing means to do so so that they will not be a burden on the new country. The US should also start to do this.

Qatar is among the Arab nations wealthy enough to pay for shipping us hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and other American-hating jihadis. Since the Arab world doesn't want them, why would they not take advantage of this bad idea? In the long run, the cost to the US in importing more Islamic or narco-terrorists has no identifiable, much less commensurate benefit.
