What the Hegseth nomination means

On Tuesday evening, President-elect Donald Trump shook up Washington by announcing that he would nominate Fox News host Pete Hegseth as secretary of defense. “Pete is a graduate of Princeton University and has a graduate degree from Harvard University,” Trump said in the announcement. “He is an Army combat veteran who did tours in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan. For his actions on the battlefield, he was decorated with two Bronze Stars.” During his years as co-host of Fox & Friends Weekend, Hegseth has focused extensively on military and veterans affairs. This year, he wrote a bestselling book, War on Warriors, in which he decried the new woke military.*

Everyone assumes that all Bronze Star medals are for v Amor. It is a confusing medal. Many Bronze Stars are not earned on the field of battle, but in the office in a combat zone. Uhless it is a "Bronze Star for valor", it is a commendation for good work in a combat zone, not in combat.. The valor medal has an added V device on the ribbon.

Re #3 - Yes, I and others here are aware of the difference. Regardless, some general or admiral with a chest full of medals (Milley for eg) is not very impressive to me. The criticism that Hegseth has no experience managing a large organization or budget is laughable when all we have been told over the years/decades is how bloated the Defense budget is, the billions of waste every year, the failures of recruitment, etc etc ad nauseum. So all the generals, admirals and former members of Congress (see Leon Panetta) and/or some defense contractor (see Mark Esper) with a Bronze Star with a V device haven't exactly accomplished all that much when SECDEF.

LOL #12. Absurd. We will soon see how serious HE is, and finally some sense will be restored to the Pentagon. The parade of traitors in uniform will be stopped and all kinds of corruption will be exposed. Or not. Maybe the US military is too far gone, but if anyone can shake up the political blackmail that got trans freaks in uniform, outright foreign agents in sensitive positions, Hegseth is the man to do it. Support the reform or be part of the problem. Franks might have been the guy, but he couldn't even outwit two FBI agents.

What the Election Really Lost – and Won 3 replies

The 2024 presidential election was not simply a contest of personalities or parties; it was a decisive stand taken by Americans against a set of ideologies and social constructs that have increasingly dominated the national conversation. This wasn’t just about whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump won or lost. It was about a clear rejection of divisive, impractical, and sometimes destructive ideas that have reshaped the fabric of our society in ways that feel fundamentally out of step with the values of the vast majority.

On this very terrain, four years ago, I asserted that we can “never again” allow an election like 2020 to happen. I’m back to say that despite Trump’s near landslide, America’s election system is still broken. And the time to fix it is immediately, while President Trump has the wind at his back with a Republican Congress and the public on his side. You most clearly see a broken election system when the margins are extremely tight. We saw it in 2020 when approximately 40,000 votes in key states tipped the election, and not so much in 2024. But rest assured, the public still lacks confidence in the integrity of our elections

Since Election Day, the Trump transition has been copying and pasting the same quote again and again into emails to reporters seeking comment on this or that presidential appointment. “President-Elect Trump will begin making decisions on who will serve in his second Administration soon,” Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt always writes without fail. “Those decisions will be announced when they are made.” The boilerplate delivers an obvious truth that many in Washington, D.C., find uncomfortable or, in some cases, unimaginable: The president-elect alone, not his senior staff, and certainly not any outside organization, is calling the shots.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson hasn’t even been sworn into office as Washington’s next governor, and yet his tenure will already start in scandal. A chief critic said Bob Scales, CEO of Police Strategies LLC, filed a $42 million tort claim against Ferguson and Washington State University (WSU) in July for alleged racketeering. He accused the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) of “managing a corrupt public procurement process that violated virtually every state procurement law and regulation on the books.” Now, Scales said it appears Ferguson is unethically partnering with lawyers loyal to him to defend his office in that case.

Until the Daily Wire uncovered concrete evidence that the Federal Emergency Management Administration was telling relief workers to avoid Trump-supporting homes, the press was happy to take FEMA’s word and debunk accusations of political favoritism. Now that the FEMA employee at the center of the current scandal is saying that she’s a scapegoat and that the problem is far deeper and wider, will the mainstream press ignore this too? In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, FEMA came under attack for its seemingly sluggish response to devastation in heavily Republican areas of the Southeast.

Bud Light lost its status as the top-selling beer in America; it’s only back up to number three today. I became aware of the left’s man problem when I wrote for Playboy back in 2015. The three-term senator now spams supporters daily, begging for $5 contributions to fund recounts against Republican Dave McCormick, whose narrow victory most media outlets have already confirmed. The collapse of Casey's careful political balancing act offers a masterclass in how not to navigate America's shifting electoral landscape.
