SCOTUS denies Illinois' gun ban challenge

The U.S. Supreme Court declined taking up the cases challenging Illinois' gun ban, saying they aren’t ready yet but also criticizing an appeals court’s rationale for denying a preliminary injunction. Tuesday, Justice Clarence Thomas denied writs of certiorari for the six cases challenging gun bans in Illinois. “Petitioners sought a preliminary injunction against the enforcement of the law, arguing that the law violates their Second Amendment right to ‘keep and bear Arms.’” Thomas wrote. “This Court is rightly wary of taking cases in an interlocutory posture. But, I hope we will consider the important issues presented by these petitions after the cases reach final judgment.”

Cases must be "ripe" for SCOTUS to take them. And wise justices like Thomas make sure that all the ducks are in a row before taking a case which could be a landmark decision. What does that mean for this? Probably that they want to be certain that it was necessary for them to rule. My bet is that Thomas thinks that a lower court will use the Bruen decision correctly to slap this down and SCOTUS won't have to do it, it will be done based on work that they have already done. There is a lot of chess in the setting of SCOTUS landmark decisions and Thomas has been doing a magnificent job of getting our many rights back, like the complete rehabilitation of the 2nd Amendment. In 1966 when I first got involved in gun control, by writing a letter to the editor of the local paper, which was published, as a teen gun owner who had a good idea that gun rights were important, even then, we were VERY close to Congress banning the private ownership of ALL handguns. It was VERY close, and things turned so that they just invented the whole "federal firearms dealer" crapola, and started keeping paperwork on who bought guns and keeping records of who bought any and all ammo, too. Prior to this 1968 gun law, guns were treated literally no different than a hammer or shovel in 99% of the country. Anyone could buy any gun thru the mail, and any hardware store, or the big retailers of the day sold guns. Sears, Montgomery Ward, Kmart all sold guns, and Sears and Wards through the mail. And then they started seriously restricting gun ownership, winning restriction after restricition. "Reasonable gun control" they called it. And they invented the term "assault weapon" to apply to any gun they didn't like. And Bush, Sr. banned importation of all military styled rifles with the stroke of a pen. And they started again on the idea of banning ALL private ownership of handguns. We were very close to losing our 2nd Amendment rights in the 60s and 70s and thru the 90s. And finaly things began to turn in SCOTUS. In decision after decision they have rebuilt and rehabilitated this right, and the Bruen decision just last year has set us on the path to steadily undo all these infringements. I'll be perfectly satisfied to let Justice Thomas plan out this particular chess match on the Illinois rifle ban. Things have been heading in the right direction for 20+ years now, and 29 states have Constitutional Carry, 42 states have some form of shall issue CCW licensing. Banning handguns is now politically impossible. We're winning. SCOTUS is bringing back a lot of our rights. The Chevron rollback will be the basis for a LOT of bureaucratic 'regulations' that are really just laws never voted on will be rolled back, one by one. Bit by bit, the Constitution is being restored. God Bless Justice Thomas and the rest of the Constitutionalist Justices.

Ditto what #1 said. Things have improved. My dad told a story that happened in the 60's wherein he went from Ohio to visit relatives in West Virginia. He brought a box of pistols in the trunk and his kin freaked out like the secret police were going to get them. Now WV is a constitutional carry state. Hopefully the ban on open bolt guns will disappear soon.

Democrats get into a majority in Federal or State levels then allow widespread criminality and lawlessness, then begin to scream about removing some Constitutional "right" as their "solution" to the problem they themselves created. At no time do the People say, "No, here's a novel approach, no more Democrats, and lets' get back to the Constitution, and the Judeo-Christian moral code.

Justices rule Trump has some immunity

In a historic decision, a divided Supreme Court on Monday ruled that former presidents can never be prosecuted for actions relating to the core powers of their office, and that there is at least a presumption that they have immunity for their official acts more broadly. The decision left open the possibility that the charges brought against former President Donald Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith – alleging that Trump conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 election – can still go forward to the extent that the charges are based on his private conduct, rather than his official acts.

A federal judge in Anchorage has ruled that the Department of the Interior may take land into trust on behalf of Alaska Native tribes, a decision that could allow tribes to create “Indian country,” which had been mostly eliminated here by the 53-year-old Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. In a 39-page summary judgment order, Judge Sharon Gleason ruled mostly but not entirely against the state of Alaska, which sued the Interior Department in 2023 to challenge a legal memo stating that the department believes it has the power to take land into trust on behalf of the state’s 228 federally recognized tribes. At issue was the Biden Interior Department's

While railing against President Joe Biden's immigration policies during Thursday's presidential debate, former President Donald Trump invoked Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old Houstonian whose murder in mid-June has taken on national profile due to its alleged perpetrators' immigration status. Referring to America as a "rat's nest" of illegal immigration, Trump conjured images of murderous immigrants overrunning major American cities before appearing to reference Nungaray's funeral, which was held earlier in the day at Houston's Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home. "They're killing our citizens at a level we've never seen before, and you're reading [about] it," Trump said. /cut/ "This is horrible what's taken place."

An increasingly desperate Emmanuel Macron has warned the public that “civil war” awaits France if they fail to vote for his brand of centrist neo-liberalism in the upcoming legislative elections. Voting for either of the “two extremes” of the populist right-wing National Rally or the leftist-socialist New Popular Front will lead to “civil war”, Macron said in an interview in which he castigated the leadership of the two main opposition parties “and those who follow them”. The embattled French leader, who’s party is trailing in third place in the snap elections he called, said that the “response of the extreme right” to France’s current problems would lead to insecurity

"Scale is a meritocracy, and we must always remain one,". "Hiring on merit will be a permanent policy at Scale." The CEO emphasized that Scale AI treats candidates as individuals, not representatives of groups. "We do not unfairly stereotype, tokenize,

State legislators and law enforcement are reinstating dormant laws that criminalize mask-wearing to penalize pro-Palestinian protesters who conceal their faces, raising concerns among covid-cautious Americans. Republican lawmakers in North Carolina are poised to overturn Gov. Roy Cooper’s (D) recent veto of legislation to criminalize masking. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said earlier this month she supports legislative efforts to ban masks on the subway, citing an incident where masked protesters on a train shouted, “Raise your hands if you’re a Zionist. This is your chance to get out.” Student protesters in Ohio, Texas and Florida have been threatened with arrest for covering their faces.

The Charter Revision Commission convened by Mayor Adams may have started as a politically motivated effort to fend off a City Council power grab — but on Monday, commissioners heard a reform proposal that could profoundly change Gotham politics for the better. The possible change sounds simple: giving nearly one million more registered voters the right to participate in primary elections. But its impact could be profound, offering New York City a way to take back local government from the hard left. Today, voters not registered to a major party are shut out of primaries, our most important local elections.

Republicans in the Michigan House of Representatives are doubling down on their opposition to a Democrat-led bill, which could put the state’s 15 electoral votes in line with the national popular vote in presidential elections. The effort comes as other states have passed measures looking to align themselves with the national popular vote, rather than their own state’s popular vote, as a way to change the way a president is elected. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have already agreed to a compact which would have them vote in line with the popular vote, rather than their respective jurisdiction’s popular vote,

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden's conduct behind closed doors, in the Oval Office, on Air Force One and in meetings around the world is described in the same dual way by those who regularly see him in action. He is often sharp and focused. But he also has moments, particularly later in the evening, when his thoughts seem jumbled and he trails off mid-sentence or seems confused. Sometimes he doesn't grasp the finer points of policy details. He occasionally forgets people's names, stares blankly and moves slowly around the room. In referring to Donald Trump, Morelle said the former president “must be held accountable for his decisions.

Democrats have a ready-made replacement if Joe Biden stands aside before November's election. She's been vetted. Her election would be historic. And she would easily take up the Biden mantle. There's one problem: Her name is Kamala Harris and by every measure she is the most unpopular vice president in American history – and among the least likely people to defeat Donald Trump in a general election fight. But Democrats may be stuck with her anyway. Former Democratic National Committee chairwoman Donna Brazile explained the party's challenge most succinctly.
