Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville police and handcuffed by officers outside of Valhalla Golf Club on Friday ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident.
Darlington said the scene involving Scheffler and the police unfolded “very quickly, very rapidly and very aggressively” on the ESPN broadcast.
Scheffler, 27, was booked before 7:30 a.m. Friday morning, according to the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections. The situation, which occurred around 5:45 a.m. in the pitch dark, was all due to a misunderstanding over traffic flow.
Scheffler was trying to get around traffic caused by a fatal accident involving a shuttle bus near the course.

This happened less than four hours ago. The police, investigating a fatal accident, had blocked the road when Scheffler drove up in his coutesy car, already in his morning routine. The cops didn't recognize him, he didn't immediately stop, and all of this resulted. Off hand, I would say that the cops overreacted.
From experience I can say that all professional golfers have a routine not only over the ball on each shot, but a routine that starts the night before by getting to sleep at the proper time. After wake up, one tries to get to the course perhaps two or more hours before one's starting time, all depending on the pro's normal pace of warming up and getting mentally prepared for competition. Everyone has his normal pace and tries to stick to it. One less variable to worry about.

A huge black eye for Louisville, the cops, the PGA tournament and organization.
Heads should roll, I would guess unacceptable ignorance is at the heart of the problem.
Meanwhile, Scheffler just became a father, playing well enough at four under and a three week layoff after a fantastic run of wins including the Masters. Now he's charged with a felony.

Sounds like Barney Fife is alive and well! I think he is going to bring down a world of hurt on Himself for trying to play Big Shot. I hope they take his gun away from him!!

One of the charges is second-degree assault of a police officer. Is that a felony?
Scheffler released a statement:
"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

Do police normally grab onto moving vehicles prior to issuing a citation?

Apparently the confusion was over WHO was allowed to enter the players/staff driveway,(if anyone) which Scheffler was turning to enter. The cop didn't know that...and wanted him to stay on the roadway past it.

Even the Tournament security officers tried to explain to the cop that he was cleared to enter at that driveway, he was arrested and hauled away anyway.

Be assured that the PGA Tour is already considering what legal steps they can take against the Louisville PD and the City of Louisville for this ... blivet. The Valhalla Golf Club with a Jack Nicklaus designed course, is a top notch facility that has hosted a Ryder Cup and at least two PGA championships. It is a place favored by the PGA of America (the PGA Championship is run by the PGA of America, not the PGA Tour), but each branch of the PGA should get involved here. The more I learn, what happened to Scottie this morning was inexcusable. The cops should have known that half of the field, some 75 players, were about to start streaming through the gate before their morning starting times. A bus hit and killed a pedestrian nearby, bringing the police to the scene. Still, why did they not know that a major championship was in town? Inexcusable. It may be a while before any more big tournaments are scheduled at Valhalla, or in Louisville. Live and learn that some places are no longer acceptable as championship venues. Scottie was horribly mistreated.

It is frightening when someone starts beating on your car in the pitch dark in the confusion around a car accident. I'll give Scheffler the benefit of the doubt in this case. It wasn't like he intentionally tried to run down a cop.

Poster 12, there is no evidence that Scheffler tried to pull rank.

I recall an incident, some years ago, where an airport security officer tried to stop the Hildebeast's SUV at an entrance gate. Reportedly she motioned to her lackey to drive on, they did not stop and nearly ran over the officer.
No charges were brought, I don't think the Lamestreams even reported it.
