Blow to UAW as Mercedes workers in Alabama

The United Auto Workers has failed in its bid to unionize workers at two Mercedes-Benz plants in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in a blow to the union’s plans to build its membership in the southern states. The loss on Friday comes amid the UAW’s ambitious union-organizing campaign to organize 150,000 non-union auto workers around the US. In April the UAW won a landslide victory at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where 73% of workers voted to unionize. The final vote was 2,642 against union representation and 2,045 for. Fifty-six percent of workers voted no.

I always remember the communist "pro-labor" movie - - Norma Rae - - where the textile workers voted for a union - - then in real life - - they promptly lost all of their jobs to non-union competitors. Yup - - unionizing is a real smart move - - if you don't like your job and want someone else to have it.

Unions don't produce anything. The union employees live off the hard work of the union members. The union benefits are rigged to the detriment of the union members.

This article needs some editing. According to the numbers printed 129% of the members voted (sounds like one of our national elections) and more voted against (2642) than for (2045). Or have I misread it completely? It’s late.

Those workers are probably making good money and have great benefits without being in a union. Joining the union might actually reduce their pay once dues are deducted from their paychecks. Perhaps the workers felt that there was no benefit to joining the UAW, only a bunch of hassles in the future when workers at some other UAW controlled auto plant goes on strike.

Unions in the places I've worked all did a few things well. They got too many employees on board. They made them too expensive. They defended to the death the lazy and incompetent employees, and in doing so whatever was produced cost too much and was no good.

Anti-Israel uprisings hit dangerous new

This is not normal. The anti-Israel uprisings at colleges across the country have featured violence (from both sides), vandalism, unlawful occupations known as “encampments,” and many other acts that go well beyond free speech. And now, at the University of Michigan, this radical protest movement just crossed the line into dangerous new territory. This week, agitators reportedly showed up at the homes of University of Michigan Board of Regents members in the middle of the night, invading their private property. They chanted on their lawns and brought with them fake corpses, faux bloodied sheets, and lists of demands, including, bizarrely, completely unrelated desires such as “defunding the police.”

House Republicans are raising concerns about alleged mistreatment of and denial of necessary medical care for two jailed, elderly pro-life activists in Washington, D.C., and Alexandria, Virginia. In a letter to the U.S. Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Thursday, House Pro-Life Caucus co-chairs Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Andy Harris (R-MD) said they have seen reports alleging that Jean Marshall 74, and Heather Idoni, 59, have been mistreated in jail while awaiting sentencing. Both women were found guilty last year of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act during a Washington, D.C., abortion clinic protest in 2020. Marshall was sentenced

China’s largest-ever military drills with Cambodia on Thursday included a showcase performance by the literal dogs of war — a squad of robot dogs with automatic rifles mounted on their backs. Both the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China and the U.S. military have experimented with militarizing the increasingly common “robodog” design. The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported in March that the PLA saw an opportunity to pull ahead in killer robot research because American designers seemed more interested in using the robots for utility tasks on the battlefield, such as carrying supplies. A Chinese research team published a study in February that found robodogs equipped with 7.62mm

The answer to that is yes ... in Israel, anyway. In a war started by Hamas with a grotesque massacre and pillaging of southern Israel, the New York Times has spent more time criticizing the victim rather than the perp. We know that thanks to an analysis conducted by Lilac Sigan for the Jerusalem Post, who researched the stories featured by the 'Paper of Record' in its newsletters since the start of the war. Sigan found the coverage fairly balanced ... for the first week of the war. After Israel launched its ground operations in Gaza, however, criticism of Hamas shrunk dramatically in comparison to that of Israel -- and disappeared

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has found loaded rocket launchers during its operation in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, now in its second week. Rocket fire from Gaza into Israel, which was nearly constant in the days following the October 7 terror attack, has largely subsided. However, in recent weeks, Hamas terrorists have fired rockets at the Keren Shalom crossing, where humanitarian aid enters Gaza near Rafah, and at the city of Sderot, near northern Gaza. In a statement, the IDF said: The soldiers of the 401st Brigade combat team, under the 162nd Division, continue precise operations in specific areas of eastern Rafah.

The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday advanced a measure to hold in contempt Attorney General Merrick Garland in an 18-15 party line vote, a step Republicans on the House Oversight panel are also expected to take later this evening. A last-minute move from President Biden to claim executive privilege over audio recordings from his interview with special counsel Robert Hur did not dissuade the GOP from proceeding, even as Garland said those asserting the privilege “cannot be prosecuted for criminal contempt of Congress.”

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the funding structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is legal. The court rejected an argument that the CFPB's funding method violated the U.S. Constitution's Appropriations Clause because Congress had not annually authorized money for the agency. Instead, Congress authorized the CFPB to draw funding from the Federal Reserve system that the agency's director deems necessary for its work. The 7-2 ruling, whose majority opinion was written by Justice Clarence Thomas, a conservative, reversed a decision by the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Three other conservatives, and the court's three liberal justices, joined in the majority opinion.

President Joe Biden has asserted executive privilege over the recordings of his interview with special counsel Robert Hur, according to letters from the White House and Justice Department to House Republicans. Republican lawmakers had previously subpoenaed the audio recordings of Biden’s interviews, along with his ghostwriter, Mark Zwonitzer and other items from Hur’s investigation into Biden’s handling of classified information. The House Oversight and Judiciary committees are scheduled to begin the process of holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with those subpoenas on Thursday.

Illegal immigration and control over the nation's borders will be one of the major issues in this fall's elections, and a key aspect of that issue is the number of people who are present in the country today - and what should be done about them. The other 16 percent of cases are linked to people traveling from Peru and Chile. The majority of the cases — 72 percent — were among unvaccinated people, the CDC said. The report cites overcrowding at the center for the rampant spread, with 500 people said to be crammed into a single room.
