The Mayor of Houston says the city is 'broke' after overspending for decades.
Democrat John Whitmire, who was elected in December, gave the bleak warning at a City Hill meeting this week where he proposed a five percent cut across all city spending to alleviate the cash-flow problem.
'I think we can all agree that we're broke,' Whitmire said, before proposing the planned cuts. This gives us a chance to discuss the financial picture of this City. It is broken! It was broken when I got here, ' he said.
America's fourth largest city is spending more money than it's taking in, leaving it with a $160 million deficit,

First question - how did a white guy get elected as the new mayor of Houston? And is he really a fiscally-conservative dem who wants to fix the mess he inherited?

The eternal Dim quest for utopia always ends in DYSTOPIA. Just look at any Dim run city or state, and, with the current Zerobama/Xiden regime, approaching this state of existence for our entire country.

I hope the November bond issue is voted down. It is not likely, because most of the people voting will not be the ones to pay for it.

"I just got here"...the H*ll you say...
He is from north houston, while working his way through college at the Welfare Dept, a professor showed him the newly drawn district around his house and convinced him to run for it. He won that race in 1973, has been in elected office ever since(it is an indication as to 'mindset' when during the biggest BOOM in Jobs/growth in History is taking place right in front of you, with millions moving from around the world to BUILD something, you take a Govt job instead) He has never drawn a "Private sector" paycheck. Held office in both the State House as well as State Senate.. His sister in law Kathy Whitmire, was coached by him and political croies into the office of City Controller in 1978, while setting the stage for taking over the Mayors office...which she did in 1982.She was Houston mayor until 1992.
john Whitmire was one of the democrat "Killer 11" who fled texas during several legislative sessions of the Senate to try to stop redistricting, by breaking the Quorum. 52 Dem members of the house did much the same thing.

#2 - Whitmire was running against Sheila Jackson-Lee. Nuff said.
If he wants to save money, he should ask Abbott to bus Houston's illegal invader population to NYC. Or to Hochul's front lawn in Albany. Or both.

the mayors of houston were the ones screaming and yowling for money money money,
demanding scotus-gorsuch- strike down the constitutional provisions on keeping commerce free from
encumbrances of local taxation. these grifters consumed millions upon millions in unjust taxation.
nobody stood up for the constitution or the taxpayers.
now they whinge for billions more lolly.

Fix your own problems, Houston. Don't expect the other 49 states to bail you out.

This mayor had the courage to admit it, probably because he is new, but all of America's big blue cities are broke and under water, some far worse than Houston. Watch closely, Houston city council will be too proud and stupid to adopt conservative policies and will follow most of the others down the rat hole. Unfortunately, thanks to Bidenomics, the feds are also too broke to continue to bail them out. Most of them will be too focused on their genitals to realize that they are disintegrating.

From the local newspaper Houston Chronicle - "Harris County leaders vote to back new housing developments with $39.8M in COVID-19 recovery funds".
Houston is a big part of Harris county. If the city is "broke" why are they spending COVID funds on housing?

Houston could recall the $500 per month they are paying low income residents in guaranteed income. Then half the city payroll is padding that could be dismissed.

I hope this is only the area within the city limits. There are probably ~ 50 municipalities in the area that are doing well.

Gee, just like the federal government, dems everywhere think they can spend, spend, spend without consequences. It allows them to play Santa Claus to buy votes instead of making HARD choices about what spending should be a priority and what spending, even if worthwhile, MUST be forgone.
Further, it inflicts inflationary effects on the public as dollars spread too far become devalued.
The Mayor's solution is the cowards way out. He doesn't want to make the HARD choices to cut out some programs that the city simply cannot afford. Instead, the programs that ARE desperately needed are hamstrung.
What we are seeing is BAD, BAD, BAD governance due to STUPID, STUPID, STUPID liberals electing idiots to manage their cities.
