Washington — The Supreme Court’s conservative majority on Thursday appeared open to recognizing some level of immunity from federal prosecution for former presidents as they weighed a blockbuster dispute that will be critical to the fate of former President Donald Trump’s 2020 election case in Washington, D.C. But the court expressed skepticism toward Trump’s argument that he should be absolutely immune from charges related to conduct that occurred while he was in office.
Across nearly three hours of arguments, several members of the court’s six-member conservative bloc signaled that they believed a former president should be shielded from criminal charges for some actions undertaken within the duties

The U.S. fertility rate hit a new record-low last year, continuing a persistent trend that will have significant consequences for American society.
The total fertility rate dropped to 1.62 births per woman last year, a 2 percent decline from the year before, according to newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control. The figure is below replacement level, meaning Americans are not having enough children to replace themselves, a development with major implications for the American economy.
The total fertility rate recorded by the CDC is the lowest since the U.S. government began tracking it nearly a century ago. It reflects a trend visible across the developed

A giant floating pier is due to be completed in the next two weeks in the eastern Mediterranean from where it will be pushed towards the Gaza shore, but there is growing uncertainty over how useful the US project will be in containing a famine.
There are concerns in the humanitarian community that Israel has co-opted the pier plan, which Joe Biden touted as a way to bring about a “massive” increase in aid to Gaza, with one aid official saying the project was in danger of becoming a “smokescreen” for the planned invasion of Rafah. US officials had said the pier was due to be in position by early

The New York Court of Appeals on Thursday overturned the sex crimes conviction against Harvey Weinstein, the powerful Hollywood producer whose downfall stood as a symbol of the #MeToo movement.
The court, by a 4-3 vote, ordered a new trial.
“We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes because that testimony served no material non-propensity purpose,” the ruling, written by Judge Jenny Rivera, states. “The court compounded that error when it ruled that defendant, who had no criminal history, could be cross examined about those allegations as well as numerous allegations of misconduct

Now an Arizona grand jury has handed up a 2020 election-related indictment procured by Arizona’s Democratic attorney general. The indictment includes charges against Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and others in connection with the scheme Trump was pursuing in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. Trump is named an unindicted co-conspirator.
The indictment is posted online here. Politico’s story on the indictment deciphers the names redacted from the indictment at present. Politico also identifies defendants whose names are visible in the version of the indictment released by the Arizona attorney general’s office Wednesday evening

As Jews wake up to the reality that the Democrat party has broken its decades’ long implied promise to protect the Jews from another Holocaust, Joe Biden may be doubling down on an effort to placate the Hamas wing of the Democrat party. According to an Israeli reporter who has highly placed contacts at the Hague, the International Criminal Court (“ICC”) is planning to arrest senior Israeli officials, something it would do only if it had the Biden administration’s permission.
Caroline Glick, who is very connected to information about the Israeli government, broke the news to English-language speakers:

Axios has released a new poll showing American attitudes toward illegal immigration and the question of mass deportations. The results are a disaster for Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.
The survey, which was done by Harris, found that a full 42 percent of Democrats favor mass deportations as a solution to Biden's self-created border crisis. That is a shocking total. We aren't talking about a polling question regarding reform for asylum rules. On that, you might expect some separation on the left. I would have never expected almost half of Democrats to be in favor of mass deportations, though. That is the supposed "radical" position

Talk about a case of whiplash. The day after a county judge dismissed state charges against 140 illegal aliens who caused a riot against National Guard troops, a grand jury indicted the illegal aliens.
Essentially, the grand jury overruled the county judge. The illegal aliens are still in jail because they have an ICE retainer against them. That's the federal jurisdiction.
A county court-at-law judge found no probable cause on Monday to continue holding 140 illegal aliens at the El Paso County Jail. They were detained on state riot charges. So, El Paso County Court-at-Law No. 7 Judge Ruben Morales agreed with El Paso County Chief Public Defender Kelli Childress

U.S. economic growth slowed more than expected in first quarter of 2024, with inflation-weary consumers tightening their belts and spending less, the government reported on Thursday.
The figures published by the bureau of Economic Analysis showed gross domestic product rose at a 1.6% annualized clip during the first three months of the year, after increasing 3.4% in the fourth quarter of 2023.
The pullback in consumer spending comes alongside higher prices and interest rates. "This was an interesting mix of data signals, and the ultimate result is higher U.S. yields, lower equities and a stronger dollar," Kyle Chapman, FX Markets Analyst at Ballinger Group, stated. "Growth momentum is evidently cooling off sharply

Last week Google fired 28 employees who had participated in a sit-in aimed at getting the company to end cooperation with Israel.
“Physically impeding other employees’ work and preventing them from accessing our facilities is a clear violation of our policies, and completely unacceptable behavior,” a Google spokeswoman said in a statement.
Years before the dismissals, tensions had been simmering between the company’s management and some activist employees over Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion Google and Amazon deal to supply the Israeli government with cloud services, such as artificial intelligence...

The IDF announced on Wednesday morning that it recruited two reserve brigades to continue the defense and attack mission in the Gaza Strip under the command of Division 99.
Elements of the evacuation of Rafah were moving into place on Wednesday, yet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the war cabinet still had not approved the attack operation against Hamas’s remaining four battalions there as proposed by the IDF.
Prior to the IDF’s withdrawal from Khan Yunis on April 7, there were around 1.4 million Palestinians in Rafah, mostly civilians, who would need to be evacuated for an invasion to go forward.

The Biden administration’s former “disinformation czar,” ousted after an apparent attempt to create an Orwellian ministry of truth within the Department of Defense, has launched a new nonprofit that declares criticism of “disinformation researchers” such as herself as a chief threat to the United States of America.
“The campaign against counter-disinformation work is the greatest threat to freedom of expression and academic integrity since the McCarthy era,” Nina Jankowicz said in a press release, pledging that her group would not “allow it to continue.”
“Once researchers are free to conduct their essential work, the American people will gain a better understanding of the nature and severity of the disinformation threats we face,”
