There is a hilarious YouTube video titled What NYC is Now mocking the disgraceful state of the city’s lawless state that is now a haven for criminals.
The video may be in fun, but is sadly based on fact.
Far too many edicts coming from Mayor Eric Adams’ administration are simply mind-boggling. The city has been invaded by illegal immigrants from several countries and the mayor has ordered that they be sheltered in hotels, schools and senior residencies, displacing senior veterans, and resident citizens. In addition, a pilot program will be giving them $10,000 prepaid debit cards to buy certain items. What?!!

Well...Alicia I am old enough to remember John Lindsey and Abe Beame.
This isn''t their Nueva York.
Even a rejuvenated Giuliani can't help people who refuse to help themselves.
If you keep voting for free stuff, somebody somewhere has to pay.
This time its the voters of the Peoples Republic of Nueva York...

Exquisite dinner, limousine service, opera tickets/binoculars, etc etc. That "free" $10,000 might go fast.

As lefties, what they can't do is say the the open border is the problem. So they dance around the cause, and make themselves look silly in the process. And the left media follows along obediently.

How about the rest of us? Is there some other country we can "migrate" to and get free housing, $10,000 cash, and a reusable get-out-of-jail-free card in case we feel like mugging old ladies? I can see the appeal. It's almost as if the Democrats are luring illegal aliens into the country.

Sorry Alicia, the PEOPLE in NYC have elected the dems to do exactly what they did, shut down the police and let crime run rampant. Why? Because their buddies in their neighborhood were the criminals and they felt it was unfair their buddies were being locked up. The police were biased. The sad fact is that when more crime is committed by minorities, there will be more minorities being arrested and jailed. Now the minority criminals are untouchable and the rule on the street is that thugs rule. Even after decades of dem government and societal failure, the people of NYC are sheep being herded by dems.
Good luck on getting the PEOPLE to change their ways. You can't fix stupid.
Smart people would abandon NY to burn itself down.

With today's technology there is little reason for the large financial institutions to stay in NYC, except inertia. When they eventually flee due to excessive taxation, regulations, crime, and corruption the city will unravel pretty quickly.

Its been dead to me since 1976; the last time I was there. Too many rude and pushy people. Too high prices. Too many openly corrupt cops. No reason or desire to ever go there again. And I hope the residents stay there and dont bring their rot here.

Alicia is blaming the wrong people, i.e. non-voting Republicans. The democrats have election fraud down to a science, and a complicit press. There is no hope for NYC or other big cities, and virtually no hope for the U.S. as a republic. November will tell the tale.

I love Alicia Colon, and I agree with all she says, except, from my view, admittedly half a continent away, it seems like the NYC voters don't seem to have enough smarts to reject the leftist destroyers and vote for any conservative. Whether it is rampant corruption in the voting process or just stupid voters, it doesn't seem like anyone except leftists can get elected. NYC has been so corrupt for so long, that I wonder if it is possible to bring it back. And, ultimately, those of us in the rest of the country, don't care enough about whether NYC fails or not to worry about it. If actual NY citizens won't fix it, it won't get fixed.
And many folks are just giving up and bailing out. Many taking a lot of money. A relative who has enough money to normally travel by chartered private jet, recently moved his business to South Carolina. He had built up his many millions in a financial business in NYC, had a harrowing escape from one of the smaller buildings of the World Trade Center, then moved his family and home to rural NJ, but close enough to commute for many years, and finally has moved all to SC, given up on the Rotten Apple.
He's very rich by my standards, but not by Trump's standards, but how many "little fish" like this leaving does it take to gut the NYC economy? Lots are leaving now that the kangaroo kourt insanity against normal business is official.

To me, New York City, has been dead since I left there in August 1952 and joined the military. I went back in 1955 for a week to visit my mother who came to New York to see my sister, and I have never been back. When I left, I swore I would never go back, and to this date, I have kept my promise.

I had never been to New York City until 2022. I had no desire to see it, and no reason to go. When I went there everybody told me "oh, there are three things you have to try here - the pizza, the bagels and the cheesecake!" So I did. I've had better pizza in Michigan. The bagels are nothing to write home about; I get better ones where I live. The cheesecake - meh. Then I figured it out: everybody who told me how great everything was in New York lived there - and had never lived anywhere else!
New Yorkers live in New York because they don't know any better.

I spent a lot of time in NYC during the 1990s, both before and during the Rudy Giuliani years. NYC was dying before Giuliani was elected and Giuliani saved it. Even after 9/11, Giuliani left NYC far, far better than he found it. Michael Bloomberg undid pretty much everything that Giuliani had done to save the city. Then Bill de Blasio came along and was the final nail in the coffin. NYC is now like a city out of a zombie apocalypse movie. You could not pay me enough to live there now.

Good column but I disagree that Bill DeBlasio, was the worst NYC mayor ever. Did she forget 1-term David Dinkens, colloquially known as 'the men's room attendant'? Crown heights race riots, etc.
She doesn't mention the superior job current placeholder, Adams, is doing either.
They could be Obama's sons.

A fine column by a fine writer. But I will be as honest as was our beloved Ms. Colon. FTA: 'All it will take for New York City to once again be the greatest is for voters to put an end to progressive, a.k.a., Democrat, dominance in the City Council and the administration. All New Yorkers must wake up and stop being woke.' Very often the phrase 'all it will take' translates to ' here's exactly why it will never happen'. Sorry, I'm afraid this is a classic case.

This year, just under 20% of the 5.6 million registered New York City voters cast ballots in the mayoral election among Democrat Eric Adams, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and other candidates. source:https://www.gothamgazette.com/city/10891-voter-turnout-2021-new-york-city-general-election
They had a great candidate in Curtis Sliwa, but no - they chose Eric Mumble Mouth Adams.

FTA - the very last sentence - "All New Yorkers must wake up and stop being woke."
But the NYers can't and won't. Until their basic needs are taken away from them, that is.

The pessimist in me says this is human nature which means things will not get better. Actually, they will likely get worse. Children have to be taught to rise above their baser instincts which isn't happening. Adults need reminders on how they are supposed to behave. That's not happening either. In many cases that child has grown into an adult but is still a child that has never grown up. Uncivilized savagery is winning out.

I love Alicia Colon and never disagree with her. But, she is wrong. New York City is dead. The City Council and all of the citywide elected positions are, and will continue to be held by communists. And they are communists. Saying they are far left minimizes and disguises who they really are.
Moreover, there is absolutely no political opposition. Often times there is no republican opposition on the ballot for citywide races. Ed Cox, the renamed head of the state republican party is so inept, such a Rhino who cares nothing about the state, he just anointed a no name guy to run against a weak Senator Gillibrand. With a great name like Congresswoman Claudia Tenney from upstate NY, and with some money and organization and a Lee Zeldin playbook, Gillibrand might have been defeated. But NOOOOO. Name some guy no one has ever heard of.
Apologies to the brilliant Ms. Colon, NYC is deader than a door nail. There is no hope.

Dear Alicia, keep hope alive. There can be life after a DNC infestation. It has happened before. It was a vibrant, beautiful city when I visited NYC (when the Twins played the Yankees in1964) and our seats were behind a pole. We sold our tickets to other fans, then went on a pub crawl through the great city. Everyone should visit the Big Apple at least once in their lifetime.

not dead. just smells that way.
pls be reminded: when the towers fell, the jackazz clazz elitists scurried to the hamptons to drink cosmos.
but the next morning, bright and early, the real deal new york crossed the bridges-on foot- en masse-
with their kits--and went to work... digging, hauling, searching, fixing, giving, bleeding, crying...
for their own ones. one thing we observed in that zone, we noticed that certain petrol stations, hot dog vendors,
street vendors, small shops, left in a puff of wind. they never came back.
