A video posted by the FDNY shockingly reveals how a charging lithium-ion battery sparked a raging fire in a Queens e-bike shop this month. The video, from King Electronic Hub in Richmond Hill, shows a charging lithium-ion battery surrounded by scooters and boxes shooting up a thick cloud of gray smoke, followed by sparks, according to a clip posted on X by FDNY. “It only took two and a half minutes for this exploding lithium-ion battery to fully engulf this e-bike shop in fire,” the text accompanying the video warns. “When we tell you illegal lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous, WE MEAN IT,” the caption reads

They don't say why or how the battery was illegal. How does the average person know an illegal battery from a legal one?

What in the heck do they mean by "illegal, uncertified devices"??? Are there some certification for lithium ion batteries that we never heard of?
Damned dangerous. My wife and I got heated vests this Christmas, each with a lithium-ion battery pack about the size of two packs of cigarettes, end to end. I only charge them when we are present and we check them periodically to see if they are getting warm. Never charge when we are asleep or away from home.

I have two 40 volt Ryobi batteries for my mower and leaf blower. I only charge them when I am at home, I check on them and as soon as they are charged, I take them off the charger.

The WEF members were slurping their Wagu Beef, discussing how the peasants should eat bugs in order to realize grand plans to save the planet, when the courier entered to inform of the lithium battery dangers.
Pausing their slurping, they asked, "Does he have to be here?"

Whole apartment buildings will be next since you have no place else to store an e-bike except in your apartment. It is going to be a disaster.

Why are these e-bike fires only happening in NYC? Hubby and I have had e-bikes for years and never had a problem.

Its all a matter of odds. In NYC there are millions of eBikes, the odds are probably something like 1 out of a million will burn every week. In smaller towns it might take 6 months for their 1 out of a million to light off. To the individual owner the odds are the same, "Do you feel lucky?, Go ahead, make my day"

#6: Just a guess. Yours is 'years old' and probably better made than the ones selling now. Just like older appliances.

Re # video linked to by #9, the guy in the video, apparently the e-bike owner says "six grand...." apparently the amount he paid for the bike, which caught fire at 3 miles into his ownership.
Unreal. A REAL motorcycle with a gas engine costs WAY less than that. Honda has a bunch of QUALITY, and reliable, "Minimoto" type bikes, kinda like this thing, for $3500 to $4200 range. And they won't catch fire.
My old 1975 Honda motorcycle still runs just fine, although I use it only in the summer for cruising around on back roads near my home on nice days.
I guess you can't carry a minimoto into your apartment.

I hate those e bikes. Have almost hit several. Like all bike types the believe that traffic laws don't apply to them.
