Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatest champions of American democracy...Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 while supporting a strike by sanitation workers in Memphis because he represented a fundamental threat to the white racial order and American apartheid. Unfortunately, while pushed back by the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s, these same forces were never defeated in American society. Instead, they adapted and evolved to maintain their power and influence.
With the Age of Trump, ascendant neofascism, and reinvigorated white supremacy the same social and political forces that martyred Dr. King are now reversing the gains of the civil rights movement.

What a crock. The dems are now and have always been POCs' worst nightmare. Luckily, some are starting to see this, but not nearly enough.

Appears some on the left miss the point by a mile, the point being "I have a dream..."

The "point"? For me, the "point" is ignore the "holiday" and carry on as I would on any other Monday, the exception being that no mail is delivered. I find it telling and amusing that at my place of work all the whites show up for work and all the blacks do not.

FTA: We should look every year at how much progress we're making on income inequality, war, poverty, and racism for example. If we had a scorecard for King's dream, we could see clearly that we've lost ground
Under Trump, Black incomes rose, there were no wars, poverty was headed down, and racism was rising only because of the MSM.
With articles like this we will have a difficult time working together, shameful!!!

Agree with poster 2. Fta” because he represented a fundamental threat to the white racial order and American apartheid” is an author’s belief cloaked as fact…the real reason is never been known

The writer misses the point that the dim party supported slavery, started a Civil War that killed 600,000 people when they feared slavery would be abolished, passed Jim Crow laws to create institutionalized racism, and formed the Ku Klux Klan to terrorize anyone who opposed them.
The whole history of racism in this country was born from the Dim party. If anyone assassinated, Dr. King, it was the dim party.
The dim party has never atoned, apologized or paid reparations for any of the above conduct.

The left and Deep State are salivating for Segregation. Separate for identity groups, except for whites. Whites are denied. It's Jim Crow V3.0.

Wow, lots of anger and big words. There really isn't that much of a race problem in this country. The whiny blacks who are angry about something keep the idea afloat but the huge majority are no different than any other American. Besides there's lots of money in the Civil Rights department and that won't be allowed to go away. The perception of the south has been created by Hollywood movies and TV programs. They don't have a clue. One thing I do know, the assassination of Martin Luther King sure worked out well for Jessee Jackson - I said his name the way Rush did.

Joe Biden, Obama, and magazines like Salon are driving whites who formerly were not racist into being racist with their constant attacks against whites and their White Supremacist and White Preference accusation.
Whites have put up with blacks getting preference in hiring by Affirmative action and their promotions for the same reason and now they are listining to this DEI tripe and getting damned tired of it, but go on, keep it up, and see what happens.

Who is this idiot that wrote this? Trump a neo-fascist! Who locked the country down, forced people to get shots and cancelled anyone who questioned the draconian measures during COVID? Who forced the social media companies to censor online posts that the regime didn't want seen? No rights of the civil rights movement had been reversed. The only screaming this are liars and cheats who used the race to get jobs they weren't qualified for. sic Claudine Gay.

The left ignores what MLK is allegedly and what most people believed he espoused. Who are they to talk? Malcolm X knew white leftists better than all the so called black leaders.

Wait a sec..the whole purpose to the MLK holiday was a subset of citizens complained that most holiday roots didn't have the same skin color. Don't sling me this garbage. I've eaten enough chow hall food...I don't need to swallow this.

Here's a word for Jonathan Eig and other biographers: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as they say, now belongs to the ages. Biographers no longer get to tell us how to remember him, how to love him, nor how to hate him. We each get our own part of his memory. He was a preacher of the Word of God. He was a father. Start with the basics.

Just the sort of lie-filled tripe one would expect from Salon. King as a great champion of American democracy. Bah! He was a well-known communist fellow traveler. And he was likely killed by a white assassin hired by more radical black activists. And Trump has no desires to take away hard-won rights for blacks, but to end discrimination against whites and others in the name of Equity
