A new Screen Actors Guild (SAG) agreement reportedly includes a hairstyling and makeup policy for non-white actors. (snip) The new rule will only apply to actors with speaking roles. Background actors will reportedly be excluded. (snip) But Towanda Underdue, a SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee and board member, said the union will prioritize extras on the next contract.
“There are so many persons of color that have been discriminated against and it seemed like it was just a normal thing that we dealt with and we didn’t always feel heard,” Underdue said. “But now we feel heard.”

This stems from the We See You, White American Theater movement, which was born when actors had nothing to do during the summer of Covid. It includes a long, long, long manifesto of absurd demands, this issue being one of them. I’ve never worked in film or television, but I worked in theater for most of my adult life. Everyone, EVERYONE, brings their own makeup and does their own hair, unless they are wearing a wig. That includes, local, regional and national theater. It’s a silly non-issue.

This news must be a tremendous relief for Whoopie Goldberg who has had to wear than rag mop on her head for so many years because the racist white makeup staff just couldn't work with the tangled mat of her hair.

Makes no difference to me. I haven't been to a movie in many years, and not planning to indulge the Hollywood sewer ever again.

To be totally equal all actors must be clean shaven, head to toe!

Anyone know when the Grievance Industry is going to make its IPO because I want to be first in line to buy stock? I tried checking on Victim.com but they don’t have anything up yet.

Can't argue with this. Black actors do have different makeup and hair style requirements than white actors. That being said, I do object to black actors being given preferential treatment over everyone else. If black actors want to bring in their own personal makeup and hair stylists, so can white actors.
No wonder movies are overpriced.

Shouldn't those policies have existed awhile ago? You really need a DEI program? For crying out loud, God has the perfect DEI policy - the Greatest Commandment. Focus on the "love your neighbor as yourself" and it doesn't get any simpler than that.
So I question why Hollywood in all of the grandeur didn't have a policy before. . .

If you look at the media and the percent of people of color are present in every show and not tokens. Most of our ads have a black person or two and the fashion magazines have a majority of Black women. What are they talking about? And where are the White people on the Black shows and magazines?

Whatever.
Your product is worthless, which is why your industry is dying.
But feel free to focus on nonsense if it makes you feel better.

I don't have a problem with this and I don't know why this should have ever come to a union demand. Management has an obligation to hire competent makeup people for the job. If the job includes non-white actors, then the makeup people should be qualified to deal with that. It is in everybody's interest that the production look right. In a unionized business with very strict divisions of labor, the actor has his own responsibilities it's not the actor's job to be a makeup designer.
And I must disagree with another poster here. While my input was generally welcomed by the makeup room, in 21 years I have never worked a professional stage production where everyone did their own hair and makeup.
