Coca-Cola has quietly scrubbed references to their support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement from their website, according to Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. The updates to the website come amid backlash over the Black Lives Matter Chicago chapter’s support of Hamas terrorists on social media. The company was also publicly slammed by Cruz on his podcast last week over their financial support of the left-wing movement. Cruz took to Twitter to call out Coca-Cola for apparently stealth-editing the references to the organization from their webpage. At last, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives successfully elected the 56th Speaker of the House on Wednesday afternoon following multiple rounds of unsuccessful ballots and withdrawn nominations, selecting Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana to lead the lower chamber.
The final roll-call vote saw Johnson land 220 votes while Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) received 209. Needing only a simple majority, Johnson easily secured his victory as previous opposition to House Republicans' speaker-designees vanished entirely on the first ballot of Johnson's bid.
House Republicans were jubilant when they coalesced around a new speaker nominee after a day of marathon-closed door meetings on Tuesday. (snip) A subsequent roll call vote where members were called upon by name to say whether they would support Johnson on the floor saw no one vote against him, and just a few lawmakers voting "present." Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., who opposed House Republicans' second speaker-designate, Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said "I don't think so" when asked if the absences will pose a problem for Johnson.
