Washington Post frets about 'violent history'

The Washington Post is putting a damper on the fall by invoking the "violent history" of America's beloved seasonal tradition: pumpkin spice. The report titled "Fall’s favorite spice blend has a violent history" set the scene of the Dutch's 1621 invasion of the Banda Islands (located in modern day Indonesia), detailing that "Thousands were killed, others enslaved, and many who fled to the mountains were starved out." University of Texas at Austin historian Adam Clulow told The Post, "The Dutch company was later accused of carrying out what some describe as the first instance of corporate genocide. . . . And it was all for nutmeg."

History is replete with crazy stuff done for stupid things. Why, speaking of the Dutch, did anyone say, "Tulips?" Salt was another commodity that provoked many a battle over the white stuff, and the Romans actually paid their soldiers with it. The etymology of our word, "Salary," comes from the word, "Salt." Hundreds of years ago it didn't take much of anything to bring about enslavement. It was a manner of life in most all nations.

I find the seasonal attention given to pumpkin spice everything to be tedious and boring but the history of the Dutch has nothing to do with obnoxious modern-day marketing practices. I do like the fact that WaPo writers can occasionally create something that doesn't say "I hate Donald Trump."

Least we forget that all of the fighting between France, Britain and Spain in the Caribbean was largely over sugar. Had the colonies produced it, England would never have given up America. Back then, the Caribbean islands were more valuable than the "colonies". And the sugar trade needed a lot of slaves.

How, exactly, does one become a “food historian” or a “spice historian”? More importantly, how does one earn a living in those “professions”?

When it was first revealed that the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” provided funding for 87,000 new IRS agents, Biden administration officials told Americans not to worry. They promised at every turn that these agents would only be set upon those earning over $400,000 a year. (snip) That broken promise comes as no surprise. Earlier this year, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was cornered into admitting that 90 percent of new audits would affect those earning less than $400,000. The new IG report confirms what Yellen was forced under oath to admit, and what many in Congress knew when they voted for the Inflation Reduction Act.

Iran was instrumental in helping Hamas launch a surprise attack against Israel early Saturday and gave a thumbs-up to the attackers in Beirut last Monday, senior members of Hamas and fellow militant group Hezbollah revealed Sunday. Iranian officials helped plan the attack, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources within those and other groups. They said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officers had plotted the assault over land, sea and air with Hamas since August, finessing details at several meetings in Beirut. Two other Islamic militant groups were also involved in the planning, the sources told The Wall Street Journal.
