A jury on Friday found former Loudoun County superintendent Scott Ziegler guilty of retaliating against a teacher for cooperating with Virginia’s grand jury probe into the district’s alleged mishandling of sexual assault cases.
Ziegler wrongfully terminated a teacher who had informed investigators about a sexual assault that happened in her classroom, the jury concluded. After teacher Erin Brooks told prosecutors, sent by Virginia attorney general Jason Miyares, about the incident, Ziegler fired her for working with the grand jury. The probe, mandated by Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin,

Torrential rain caused flooding that forced rescues, closed roads, disrupted subway service and overwhelmed basements in the New York City area as “dangerous and life-threatening” rainfall surged across the concrete expanse on Friday.
A month’s worth of rain – more than 4 inches – fell over parts of Brooklyn in just three hours. Intense rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were falling across the region, and the National Weather Service warned totals exceeding 8 inches “are increasingly likely” in parts of the tri-state area. A widespread 2 to 5 inches had already fallen across the the New York City area since midnight, with much more to come, despite

A band of House conservatives on Friday voted down a GOP bill to avoid a government shutdown.
The vote marked a significant — and embarrassing — defeat for Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as a shutdown this weekend appears increasingly inevitable. Twenty-one Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the legislation, bringing the final tally to 198-232.
The GOP lawmakers who voted against the bill were: Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Dan Bishop (N.C.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Ken Buck (Colo.), Tim Burchett (Tenn.), Eric Burlison (Mo.), Michael Cloud (Texas), Eli Crane (Ariz.), Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), Wesley Hunt (Texas), Nancy Mace (S.C.), Mary Miller (Ill.), Cory Mills (Fla.),

A senior executive at U.S. risk advisory firm Kroll has been barred from leaving the Chinese mainland, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
Hong Kong-based managing director Michael Chan is assisting an investigation into a case dating back a few years, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter, adding that neither Kroll nor Chan were the target of the investigation.
Chan traveled to the mainland in July and subsequently informed his employer that he couldn't leave, the report said. Chan is a Hong Kong passport holder, can move freely in mainland China and is still working, the report added.

The federal government warned its employees a shutdown is imminent as the House passed three out of four Republican appropriations bills late Thursday evening with about 48 hours left to go until the government runs out of money.
As a result of the late-night votes, the State Department, Department of Defense, and Department of Homeland Security were funded for the next fiscal year, although the agricultural spending bill failed to pass. The House previously passed an appropriations bill for military construction and veteran affairs in July, bringing the approved total to four out of 12 bills.

Elon Musk announced plans for a trip to Eagle Pass, Texas, the epicenter of the Biden border crisis.
Musk was curious as to why there is so little press coverage on the crisis at the border. My guess is that they don’t care about the humanitarian and national security crises any more than Joe Biden does. They are all perfectly happy with an open border. They see future Democrat voters. And the effects of Biden’s neglect are historically horrible. The press covers for Democrats and Joe Biden.
Elon Musk supports a border wall and he thinks those who seek asylum should have evidence of their asylum claims before being

TEMPE, Arizona — President Joe Biden issued one of his most dire warnings yet that Donald Trump and his allies are a menace to American democracy, declaring Thursday that the former president is more interested in personal power than upholding the nation’s core values and suggesting even mainstream Republicans are complicit.
“The silence is deafening,” he said.
During a speech in Arizona celebrating a library to be built honoring his friend and fierce Trump critic, the late Republican Sen. John McCain, Biden repeated one of his key campaign themes, branding the “Make America Great Again” movement as an existential threat to the U.S. political system.

Former President Donald Trump will not seek to move his criminal election interference case in Georgia to federal court, according to a court filing Thursday.
The filing comes weeks after the former president's attorneys notified Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who is presiding over the case, that he might attempt to pursue a federal venue. "This decision is based on his well-founded confidence that this Honorable Court intends to fully and completely protect his constitutional right to a fair trial and guarantee him due process of law throughout the prosecution of his case in the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia," Trump attorney Steven Sadow wrote.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott made a rare visit to New York City Wednesday, when he praised Democrats Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul for pressuring President Biden on the "national crisis" of the influx of more than 116,000 migrants who have arrived in the Big Apple since last year.
"What you're dealing with in New York, what you are seeing and witnessing in this state is a tiny fraction of what's happening every single day in the state of Texas," Abbott said, making a speaking appearance at the conservative think tank the Manhattan Institute. Last year, more than 2.3 million people were apprehended coming across the border illegally,

NEW YORK — An appeals court Thursday rejected Donald Trump’s bid to delay a civil trial in a lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general, allowing the case to proceed days after a judge ruled the former president committed years of fraud and stripped him of some companies as punishment.
The decision, by the state’s intermediate appellate court, clears the way for Judge Arthur Engoron to preside over a non-jury trial starting Monday in Manhattan in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil lawsuit.
Trump is listed among dozens of possible witnesses, setting up a potential courtroom showdown with the judge. The fraud ruling Tuesday threatens to upend his

A prosecutor overseeing the Hunter Biden tax probe likely intervened to protect President Biden from Department of Justice scrutiny, Eileen O’Connor, former assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Tax Division, testified at the first House Oversight impeachment hearing Thursday.
The inquiry, which was formally opened earlier this month without a full House vote, builds on the committee’s months-long probe into Biden’s alleged foreign influence peddling.
U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware David Weiss led the investigation into Hunter Biden’s taxes, assisted by Delaware Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf.

Two major anthropological associations have canceled a panel discussion on the importance of biological sex, citing harm to the “Trans and LGBTQI” communities and their collective “dignity.”
On September 25, the American Anthropological Association (AAA) and the Canadian Anthropology Society (CASCA) wrote a letter canceling the upcoming conference panel, “Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby: Why biological sex remains a necessary analytic category in anthropology,” which they had previously accepted.
“The reason the session deserved further scrutiny was that the ideas were advanced in such a way as to cause harm to members represented by the Trans and LGBTQI of the anthropological community as well as the community at large,”
