Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) president Stacy Davis-Gates sends her son to an elite private Catholic school, despite having voiced her opposition to school choice policies in the past, according to multiple reports. Davis-Gates reportedly sends her son to the well-regarded De La Salle Institute, nestled on Chicago’s south side, according to Wirepoints. The private Catholic school costs $14,750 in tuition per year, according to their website. (snip) On Twitter, Davis-Gates apparently wrote school choice was, “actually the choice of racists.” She added the policy was, “created to avoid integrating schools with Black children.”

The hypocrisy is strong in this one. The school choice issue arose in response to the failure of the public school system to actually educate children. The response of the teachers union? Throw more money at the problem, oh those poor hard working teachers! Sit back and watch the money go to more administrators, mid-level report generators and "compliance" officers, not one of whom educates anyone. And while we're at it, let's oppose any other solutions, particularly the one that siphons the good teachers out of the public system, and more importantly, out of the union. Can't have that!

At one time, I read a statistic that the profession that sent the most kids (on a percentage basis) to private schools were public school teachers. Full disclosure. My wife teaches in public school. We sent our kid to private school PK-8 and moved into a better school district for his high school years.

Want to fix the DC schools? Require that all federal employees in DC send their kids to public schools. The one thing I admired about Jimmy Carter was that he sent Amy to a DC public school - he was not a hypocrite when it came to education.

The Biden administration’s decision to restrict oil activity in Alaska last week will likely face at least one legal challenge, E&E News reported Monday. The Department of the Interior (DOI) declared Wednesday its intention to retroactively cancel seven leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) owned by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA), (snip) The lease sales in question were mandated by Congress in 2017 to pay for the Trump-era tax cuts of that same year. “A willingness to circumvent laws passed by Congress has consequences reaching far beyond ANWR’s boundaries, and will impact future development across this country,” AIDEA said,

I am hardly the first or the only person to note the fact that social justice ideology is simply a religious replacement for Christianity. (snip) But my Alma Mater, Carleton College, surprised even me by hiring as its new Chaplain of the college an avowed atheist. (snip) I know that many people who do not believe in God still have a sense of justice, but for the most part, that sense is informed by a Christian tradition that they are actively attacking. Equality as a good is a particularly Christian concept, and based on the belief that whatever our individual differences we are all creatures of God.

A federal appeals court ruled against Mississippi’s permanent voting ban for certain felons, going against Supreme Court precedent in doing so. (snip) Judge Edith Jones countered in a dissenting opinion that the majority ruling itself contradicted the Constitution and reflected judicial activism. (snip) Jones also cited the Supreme Court precedent set in the 1974 case Richardson v. Ramirez, which determined that felon voting bans don’t violate the Equal Protection Clause. In that case, the court ruled that the question of handling voting rights for felons should be hashed out in a legislative forum, and that it wasn’t for their court to “choose one set of values over another.”

The Democratic mayor of a small Massachusetts city is urging state lawmakers to reform a 40-year-old “right-to-shelter” law that is putting immense strain on the area as thousands of migrant families arrive. Woburn mayor Scott Galvin said by Friday there were about 150 families living in the city’s hotels, an arrangement he called unsustainable for his 40,000 constituents. Under the 1983 right-to-shelter law, Massachusetts officials are legally required to offer housing to any homeless families seeking shelter in the state. The law now covers a rising influx of migrant families, although individuals are not covered under its provisions.
