Former Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday called on his party to turn away from what he described as a growing threat of populism led by his former White House boss Donald Trump and “his imitators.”
In a speech delivered at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, Pence said that “Republican voters face a choice” between conservative principles and the rising populist movement within the party.
In his sharpest language to date against the Trump wing of the GOP, Pence said that the populists were substituting limited government and traditional values for “an agenda stitched together by little else than personal grievances and performative outrage.”

Right. The "siren song" of insider corruption by both parties is so much more appealing.

I heard Pence speak in person a couple of times when he was VP.
I thought he was pretty good...... until he stabbed President Trump in the back.
As far as I'm concerned, that was the end of Pence.
He can go take a Long Walk off a Short Pier.

It's not personal but we are outraged, Mr. Vice President. Given the accelerating actions of disregard among the the government, media, and financial elitists - populism never looked so good.

It's become more and more apparent Pence was one of the many stabbing Trump in the back during his presidency. It's surprising he got as much done as he did. It's also obvious he was being fed poor advice when he sought it.

I don't care what conservatism looks like a hundred years from now. I care about my family, my community, my nation right now. Is that populism?
Sign me up. I love Trump because he sacrificed everything for us. He got poorer, not richer, in office. When has that every happened before?
Bye, bye Pence!

Yup, donkey Pence wants us to go back to the good ole days of electing those who tell us what we want to hear only to then do the opposite once elected and tell us what we should think. People like him who think they know better and are our superiors who shouldn't be questioned. Those like him who are responsible for the situation the country is in because they did not fight and let the democrats destroy our schools, our politics, our legal system and our voting system. Right, that is who we should listen to rather than the man that fought and did what he said he would do.

Like tiny drops of water that carve out majestic canyons and seep into cracks and break concrete, the "growing threat of populism" will upend your club's tyranny, Mr. Pence. And that is what you fear: We the People.
Because you know the "growing threat of populism" of our Founding fueled a colony of patriots to overthrow history's most formidable military.

I don't think he understands that populism has always been a political movement that opposes the rule of elitists and oligarchs. The choice is not between populism or conservatism. Anyway, Trump is the de facto nominee and Pence is way behind the voters on this populism thing.

I can't think of a Conservative principle that trump routinely advocates against. Mr. Pence, could you set me straight on that? Is he saying that joining the Ukraine war is some conservative principle? Honestly, I don't get it.

The search engine of first-resort defines populism as "a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups."
Bingo!
And it's beginning to look more and more like the GOPe, the party whose continued existence I imagine Pence is most concerned about, is one of those "established elite groups" that have shown no genuine regard for the wishes of ordinary people, nor for the mounting problems that threaten to overwhelm their families and their futures.
Such a party won't be missed, at least not by the so-called "ordinary" people who built and maintain this country whose bounty the scavengers of derivative professions like politics feast upon.

Didn't see any. This morning he complained about making/keeping abortion a state issue. He wants it to be federal. Who knew the 10th Amendment was populist?

Okay now I'm really confused. Trump had a populous tilt when he ran in 2016. Pence was his vice president and supported his policy positions, but is he saying he thought the populist tilt was bad then, I don't remember that. Or is Pence just an unprincipled hack that will say anything to hold on the power?
