Indy 500 national anthem reaction ranges

Multiplatinum singer Jewel performed the national anthem before the 2023 Indianapolis 500 and fan reaction was ... mixed. Indy 500 fans called the performance everything from 'The best I've ever seen' to 'mangled.' As part of the opening ceremonies, New Mexico's Holloman Air Force Base also sent four F-16 Vipers to this year's Indy 500. Here's the replay, and what fans had to say about the performance and opening ceremonies at IMS. (Snip) Jewel butchered the national anthem at the Indy 500. People were trying to sing along but couldn't because of the way she sang it. What a shame.

Comments:

I hate when performers want to put their own artsy spin on the National Anthem. Hers was achingly slow and screechty.

I agree with OP. Why can't they just let a local college or military band perform it and be done with it. I am beyond tired of music "stars" mangling the Anthem in an attempt to "make it their own!!" I usually find myself muting the television and playing a recording I have on my phone.

"Multiplatinum"? Never heard of this "Jewel" person, which I assume means that he or she is some sort of a trash "rap artist"....many of them cannot sing a lick.

Loved it. Once I had heard Jimi Hendrix perform the Anthem I could appreciate the pride and reverence the artist displays when performing. It's the same song, just more depth in the Patriotism.

I think it’s disrespectful to change our national anthem to make a personal statement. The melody to be specific. The instrument/s you choose to play the tune with is all you.

The tempo was meant to be that of a march - energetic, lively, positive, heroic, etc. Singing or playing it slowly makes it sound like a funeral dirge. If you want to hear what the instrumental version is meant to sound like, listen to the opening of Mark Levin’s radio show.

She took the lyrics of the “star spangled banner” and sang them (poorly) to some other unrecognizable tune. What gives her the right to take that artistic license with OUR national anthem? This was some other country’s anthem, not ours.

Frankly I’m annoyed that over the past few years only women singers need apply to sing our national anthem. Some are good others atrocious but can we not mix things up a bit and hire a male singer once in a while? The best Star Spangled Banner I ever heard was sung by Josh Gobran.

our national anthem was originally a poem and was never meant to be sung - I always thought "God Bless America" would have been a better national anthem but unfortunately Kate Smith couldn't live forever, - something on the idea of Canada's "Oh, Canada" might be a better idea than these songstresses withering and yodeling their way through to the ending high note where their voice cracks because it's at a pitch considered unattainable to the human vocal cords

Her rendition wasn't bad, in the sense of being disrespectful, or adding new notes, or octaves, as some have done. But her slow, folk-song version would have worked in a small venue coffeehouse, maybe. What amazed me was that the flyover team knew how long her version would take, and got the 4-ship over the track exactly on time as she finally got to the end!

One of the most maddening things about modern culture is the whole issue of pronouns. At the very least, it’s annoying that some people trumpet their pronouns, choosing to base their identity on how people address them when talking about them behind their backs.
