A top Republican donor has rowed back on his support of Ron DeSantis due to the Florida governor's stance on abortion and book bans.
Hungarian-born billionaire Thomas Peterffy had previously said he was 'looking forward' to financing the 44-year-old lawmaker's probable White House bid.
But he told the Financial Times on Saturday that he and 'a bunch of friends are holding our powder dry' because of the governor's 'stance on abortion and book banning'.Earlier this week, DeSantis signed-off a new six week abortion ban in Florida worrying many centrist conservatives who see such draconian rules as vote losers. It now heads to the state's Supreme Court

If he really said “book banning” then he’s just an establishment tool regurgitating leftist talking points. Keeping inappropriate material from CHILDREN is not banning anything.

It would not make me unhappy if RDS decides not to run in 2024. Here in FL, we consider him a superb Guv. We don’t want to lose him to the machine. He could serve the country better by continuing to set an example as to how a Guv should run his State. Ron DeSantis, if you read this, don’t run in 2024. Run later on. We’ve got your back.

The rinos are whispering in Ron's ear . I think he is very foolish to listen to this pack of uni party sell outs.

So foreign born money backing DeSantis? The news just keeps piling on doesn't it? We do not need a return to the old RINO traditions, no matter how hard the donors and Uniparty want it.

He's just not ready to run for president. He's being misled by the GOPe. Yeah, he has a chance to be president, but not this time around. He should just back off and be the best governor he can be. For now.

Good advice to not run, DeSantis. The MAGA ads about what a dirty creep you are will hurt your run, so let Trump go again. When the ballots are counted and favor Biden, what will Trump and supporters do? Four more years of I was robbed? The democrats already know they’ll beat Trump again.

This Floridian agrees with # 3. Absolutely nothing good can come of a Trump vs. DeSantis race, and we need Governor Ron right here.

He is one of the best governor's in the country. He should stay in Florida until he is term limited and then run for President, if he still wants the job.

#11, I guarantee if the ballots are legal, Trump wins in landslide just like he did in 2020. Politics as we know it changed forever on the night of November 3, 2020. Whether you like him or not, he did great things for this country and by doing so upset the deep state and corruptocrats in both parties which made him their number one enemy. Their only strategy is to destroy him personally and politically because his successful policies revealed what an anti-American system has been ensconced in Washington DC for decades. I will not abandon him because I trust him. What he promised he delivered.

11, the left knows Trump won in 20 and his win in 24 will be off the charts.
That's why they are trying to keep him from running with countless frivolous lawfare attacks.
I look forward to voting for Trump again in 24. Do you?

I wasn't aware Desantis had stated he was running for anything. It's the media that's made Desantis a candidate, not Desantis himself. However, Desantis hasn't said he's not running.

DeSantis is a good man, and a good Governor. I do not think he would be swayed by donor blackmail. DeSantis is well known, and can get by on his own. He knows how to get free publicity with his acts as Governor, and public appearances. I support Trump this round. But I am not joining the condemnation of DeSantis, who is young, and definitely a presidential prospect for the future.

The replies here all ignore the fact that the Florida law, which basically bans abortionsc obn the national level is electoral suicide for the Republicans. This is not where most Americans are at. The previous Florida law allowing abortions up to 15 weeks was one that most people could live with and would have diffused the issue. We have already seen how the issue can be used with devastating effect in the last Wisconsin Supreme Court election. De Santos has made his first big political error here. It would also be an error to completely ban all LBGTQ material from at least the upper grades as kids can think for themselves. After all, conservatives have been able to take the high ground on censorship in the schools and would lose it here.

This smells like a hit piece.
Hope everyone realizes DeSantis comes under fire from the liberal left as well as the Trump camp. The two largest political groups out there, atm.
A six week abortion ban does not sound like RINO legislation. Quite the opposite in fact. The GOP donors are holding their support because he is too socially conservative.
Not that it means much though.
Who was big on opposing abortion, but rolled over for the Democrats on everything else?
Answer: Bush II.
Just like this Republican donor, I am not supporting any candidate, atm.

I'm getting tired of this game of cat and mouse played by the rinos...sanctimonious cannot win...there are to many of US MAGA voters out here in fly over country...and now with the New York games played by Bragg and the big angry black woman who hate President Trump...the country has rallied to President Trump's side...the rats were hoping for black support...but...it seems more blacks are not buying what they have to sell...so scaring the inner cities with out of control crime by soros' goons and prosecutors is only adding to President Trump's numbers....

#20, not sure what you are trying to say. Are you suggesting the proposed Florida law attempts to ban abortions on a national level? Or, are you saying that abortions are banned on a national level? In either case, neither one is even remotely true. Most people are NOT onboard with killing a child after a heartbeat has been detected. In fact, quite the opposite. Your suggestion that DeSantis temper his position for electability sake smacks of GOPe “principle,” as does the coy campaign/non-campaign he has allowed Karl Rove to fashion for him. I think the governor has much more to offer the country than what the Lincoln Project clowns want. Shake off these parasites, Ron, and come back when you stand on your own as a man of principle, and not a K Street player.

At least one of DeSantis’s big supporters has backed away. As for his going it alone an not needing financial supporters, that is gross naivete. He was in the House, heavily supported by similar donors. He undoubtedly had them in Florida. He needs them now. Problem: Those donors don’t give out of the goodness of their cold little corporate hearts. They have “expectations” of their candidate. To win and to take caee of them.
As for #18’s just finding out that this has been and continues to be a site where many are MAGA Trump supporters, he’s been around for quite a while. Rather disingenuous shot.

In response to #23, I am suggesting that DeSantis has de facto taken a nationally unpopular position on abortion that he thinks could help him in the primaries, but would certainly spell disaster for the Republicans should he become the nominee. As for being principled, was DeSantis acting on principle when he signed the 15-month limit a couple of months ago or now? One can assume he was being expedient at least once. Abortion is one of those issues on which intelligent persons can honestly disagree and the role of politics if if works right is to find some sort of middle ground both sides can at least live with. Most Americans do not believe almost all abortions should be banned after only 6 weeks and to push this agenda makes it easy for the Democrats with the help of the MSM to paint Republicans as extremists on this issue whereas in fact allowing late-term abortions is the extreme position. This nation is in extreme danger and I see the Republican frittering away any opportunity to reverse the disastrous Biden legacy. A shame, I have been a DeSantis supporter as he has been a great governor following Trump policies without the accompanying divisive theatrics.

Thinking about Karl Rove as an adviser to Gov. Ron Desantis, as a praying Christian, it makes me
sick to my stomach to think that this man, Rove, is advising DeSantis on any national subject. Karl Rove is a
slick, sick, slimy politician who would make a deal with the devil if he thought it would give him power and control
in our government. No wonder many have turned away from Fox News: Rove is a political adviser to the Board.
Sick!

#14, I know how the “ballots” were counted because it happened in my state. I’m talking about the ballot harvesting and counting “ballots” a week after voting day. In every instance in the close races, guess who won? The democrats of course. And they will do it again. After the red wave that didn’t happen, I have given up. I will also add, I don’t like the infighting and the MAGA ads look like liberal ads. If DeSantis or any other candidate on the Republican side goes after Trump, I won’t like that either. We do need independent votes too, but I still fear the democrats will keep the presidency.

What is confusing about this?
Looks as though those who fear the baby-killers are freaking out in advance of something they are extrapolating from this into national law? In any event, it is not an “abortion ban”.
