The Aldi store in north Minneapolis is closing next week, leaving the wider Northside community with just one large grocery store. The store, located at 3120 Penn Ave. N., will have its final day on Feb. 12. An Aldi spokesperson blamed the closure on "the inability to renovate the store to accommodate our larger product range and our current lease term expiring." It will leave north Minneapolis with just one large grocery chain, Cub Foods at 701 W. Broadway Ave., and independent options such as So Low Grocery Outlet at 3111 Emerson Ave. N., and North Market at 4414 Humboldt

I have stopped shopping at the local Aldis because the price differences with the supermarket down the street don't justify the gasoline use. Much of Aldis is filled with stuff like bed pillows, throw rugs, towels and other non-perishables now taking the spaces once filled with foodstuffs. I do not expect this store to be open much longer.

Next will be free food delivery for the “underserved” because the stores have all fled the violent neighborhoods. Paid for with taxpayer dollars, of course. Count on it.

This is the expected result of looting, rioting, and other crimes. The groups truly responsible for this will bear no responsibility at all. Perhaps the rest of the poor souls in these neighborhoods could persuade them. A lot of them are related to each other.

I have witnessed similar in my area for decades. The city will pay a supermarket to open in a "food desert" and guaranty a profit. But the store will close within a year. The major reason is not the inevitable shoplifting but the mortal danger to employees (if they can get employees), intensive damage to company and employee property and insurance costs.

A store can not make enough profit to stay open when two thirds of the customers do not bother to stop at the cash register on their way out with an armload of groceries. I do not feel sorry for the residents since they all took part in the George Floyd celebrations and voted to defund the police.

Over 25 years ago, I worked at an Aldi store in NJ. The manager was telling someone that the goal was to put Aldi stores in middle class neighborhoods. The poor will travel to the middle class areas to shop but the middle class people will not travel to the poor areas of town to shop. It could be that the neighborhood changed and it wasn't worth the aggravation to upgrade the store at this location.
