Pelé, the Brazilian soccer icon who brought the World Cup trophy to his home country three times, becoming an international superstar and the highest-paid team athlete in the world at the time, has died. He was 82. His daughter Kely Nascimento announced his death Thursday on Instagram. Pelé's health had been deteriorating as he aged. Doctors at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo said in late December that he was receiving "elevated care" related to "kidney and cardiac dysfunctions" stemming from the cancer he had been fighting for more than a year. He also had a respiratory infection, and his family said

I was lucky enough to see Pele play in Person in 1976. Well past his prime he still had a devastating shot on goal.

Like #1, had the opportunity to see him play, mid-seventies, with Santos at the old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Took a shot with the goalie out of position that a defender dove toward and deflected over the crossbar with his head. Pele helped the guy up and shook his hand. Class.

The Mohamed Ali, Joe Namath, Tom Brady, Babe Ruth...of the worlds most popular sport. I was playing and then coaching collegiate soccer in the 70's 80's and we had films...no videos in those days...that were mind boggling, there was no one like him when it came to ball control, I saw film of him playing 4 on 1, 5 on 1 practice games and he was unstoppable, he could score from ANYWHERE beyond the midline, or even from behind it. "Thunderfoot". I saw him once in an airport, americans didn't even notice him, anyone from ANY foreign nation recognized him immediately I saw wealthy foreign businessmen and a sheikh fawning for an autograph....he paid more attention to the kids.

Rest in peace. You were the best in your sport. I say that as someone who doesn't keep up with soccer, but when it came up Pelé was the top name.

Not a soccer fan, but I am a movie buff. He starred in a WWII flick about a soccer game between Allied prisoners and German nationals. The scene were he scored by an over the head kick was great. The movie was titled Victory. (Originally titled Escape to Victory). RIP.

Will Trump Run as a Third-Party Candidate? 8 replies

Any bets on how far into 2023 we get before someone renames the news cycle the Trump Cycle? Or how long until CNN creates CNNTRUMP+ — All Trump, All the Time? I give it until February. As the refugees who migrated to the MSM from the island in Lord of the Flies don loincloths, hoot, holler, and jump up and down around the latest bonfire, in this case, Donald Trump’s taxes, a far more intriguing question has emerged for serious politics watchers: will Trump run as a third-party candidate? Trump posted a link on his Truth Social account to an article in American Greatness: The piece by Dan Gelernter, entitled

Republicans in the minority on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee declared Friday that there had been “no legitimate legislative purpose” for the Democratic majority to release Donald Trump’s tax returns. It was the first time Congress had ever obtained and released the federal tax returns of a private individual. Democrats claimed that they needed the returns as they considered future tax legislation. But the former president argued in court — to no avail — that Democrats were overstepping the separation of powers. On Friday, the committee released six years of Trump’s returns, from 2015 through 2020. While they revealed little that was noteworthy, other than some debatable

At long last, after years of baseless speculation and struggle sessions on cable news networks, Donald Trump’s fabled tax returns have been released, and members of the press are bubbling with excitement. In an unprecedented abuse of power, Democrats in the House of Representatives decided to seize a private citizen’s taxes and dump them out into the public for no legitimate reason whatsoever. There was no constitutional oversight role being performed (because again, Trump is not in government), and certainly, there was no legitimate investigative purpose given they had no evidence of wrongdoing related to the work of Congress.

This is either a bizarre coincidence or evidence that a Narrative™ decree has gone out. (No, I don’t think there are actual decrees…mostly). Yesterday I wrote a piece about Scientific American’s rather odd republishing through tweet of an article originally published in 2020. In it, the author argued that the medical establishment and our society as a whole stigmatizes obesity because Black women are the most obese demographic in America. People can be “healthy at any size,” and focusing on obesity as a health problem is racist. Now one day later Time Magazine is promoting an article that argues that exercise has White supremacist roots.

The House Ways and Means Committee released a partially redacted version of former President Trump's tax returns Friday, completing a longtime objective of Democrats to make Trump's finances public after the former president unsuccessfully tried to stop them in court. The financial documents cover six years of Trump's individual returns filed jointly with his wife, Melania, including his time in the White House. The document dump also includes tax forms for several of Trump's business entities that were investigated by Ways and Means Democrats, a report from the Democratic majority, and a response by Republicans on the committee. The tax forms provide insights into the state of Trump's finances

On Thursday, text messages leaked showing that Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) had permanently banned a female staffer from her congressional office for failure to take a COVID-19 test. During the exchange, Porter went on to accuse the staffer of giving her COVID-19, refusing to let her retrieve her personal belongings in person while showing no care for the personal tragedy the staffer had been facing. It was a mask-off moment for Porter, who has grown quite the fan club among whiteboard-loving liberals who think cheap grand-standing during hearings is evidence of brilliance. But what made things even worse was who the staffer was.

We have just lived through a respiratory virus epidemic and many are wondering, Why did our government and the social media platforms block any intelligent discussion of the virus that was making its way around the globe? In an ideal world, doctors would communicate freely about treatments for a new disease that they have tried, and how, and under what circumstances, those treatments have succeeded or failed. This is called the scientific method. But the scientific method has not prevailed over the last few years. Instead, the public square has been dominated by government-dictated dogma that often turned out to be wrong. The result was that many people died needlessly

In Against the Great Reset, Harry Stein asks how the Left has managed to subvert the culture and trample so effectively upon the fundamental concepts of decency, equality, justice, morality, and even human biology itself, not to mention humor and modesty. The answer may be found not only in policy and power wielded from the top but also in the gradual saturation of the public mind with a vast set of implicit assumptions regarding what constitutes enlightened societal advancement. In other words, a large part of the answer is the Left’s near-absolute domination of mass popular culture — music, film, sports, news media, entertainment, and so on — all infused

I thought Titanic sucked, and Avatar was a snooze, but Cameron has a few greats to be proud of. But he isn’t proud of them. In fact, without naming these movies he implies he wished he never made them. They “fetishize” gun violence, and he is done with that. Guns make him sick to his stomach now. He is so done with gun violence, in fact, that he has made a war movie (Avatar 2 is indeed a kind of war movie, in which the human beings

Italy’s decision to take extra precautions with Chinese travelers paid off on Wednesday as two flights from China landed in Milan and half of the passengers tested positive for Covid-19. Italy was one of four countries that announced they would impose coronavirus restrictions on Chinese travelers because a massive wave of coronavirus infections is ripping across China, racking up millions of cases in a single day — but the tyrannical Chinese government decided to abandon almost all of its disease control protocols with almost no preparation for the consequences, loosen up travel restrictions, and begin handing out passports just in time for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Starting Jan. 1, many Americans will qualify for a tax credit of up to $7,500 for buying an electric vehicle. The credit, part of changes enacted in the Inflation Reduction Act, is designed to spur EV sales and reduce greenhouse emissions. But a complex web of requirements, including where vehicles and batteries must be manufactured to qualify, is casting doubt on whether anyone can receive the full $7,500 credit next year. For at least the first two months of 2023, though, a delay in the Treasury Department’s rules for the new benefit will likely make the full credit temporarily available to consumers who meet certain income and price limits.

U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy last week permanently blocked a section of law the state said was meant to prevent employers — including many health care facilities — from discriminating against workers by requiring them to be vaccinated against communicable diseases, including COVID-19. “The public interest in protecting the general populace against vaccine-preventable diseases in health care settings

When the 2020 presidential campaign was lurching into gear three years ago, former Vice President Joe Biden had led in the polls for months. Still, everyone kind of assumed he was a placeholder, a former office-holder with high name recognition whose campaign would nevertheless go the way of his two previous presidential bids, meaning nowhere. He was dull as dishwater compared to many of the others vying for the nomination, and nobody had ever really considered him presidential timber. As the campaign took off, other candidates were winning in the early states even as Biden still led in national polls.

But when it comes to the immune system, artificially juicing up the body to create antibodies with long-term tolerance to a pathogen is a recipe for disaster. Amid thousands of papers on COVID and the vaccines, a new German paper published in Science Immunology should be the headline story this week. Although the subject matter is very dense, the implication of it is that the Pfizer shots (and possibly other mRNA spike protein shots) caused the immune system to misfire, thereby creating an endless feedback loop of viral immune escape, perpetuating the pandemic in the macro,
