America’s First Thanksgiving

On May 14, 1607, headed by a seven-man council that included John Smith, 144 men settled Jamestown. Because of their misguided efforts, it was a disaster from the beginning. These men battled the elements, disease, Indians, starvation, and one another. The lone minister on the adventure, Robert Hunt, did his best to keep the others focused on God. His sermons went mostly unheeded; however, he persevered. By February of 1608 only 38 of the 144 remained alive. The death rate did not abate with time. As Peter Marshall and David Manuel note,

And excellent reminder of how this day was invented, with a reminder that socialism causes starvation and individualism results in plenty. I passed this link on to several friends and family just now. Happy Thanksgiving to all LDotters.

Thank you, OP, and thank you Trevor Thomas for mentioning Rush Limbaugh. I still love & miss him very much, and I’m so thankful for the great difference he made in our history & for the wonderful memories of his broadcasts. At Thanksgiving time, it is traditional for people to recount the things they are grateful for. I would like to do the same. And what am i grateful for? Well, I don’t grow my food; I don’t do the gathering and delivery and basic prep on it. These days, our food comes elsewhere, from factories supplied by American farmers, truckers, and food processors, all guided by business administration. I didn’t build the house I live in, that too comes from businesses. The roads I drive on, the electrical power I use, that is the result of cooperation between government and businesses. I am grateful for all this, for the blessings given to me by humans, and god.

Reading this story reminds me how grateful I am for my pubic school education in western Kentucky in the 70s. Though hindsight has showed me my high school history teacher was liberal, she was the first to teach me that socialism equates with deficit (except for the elite) and private enterprise results in surplus. The history of our American Thanksgiving was my first classroom example of this, to be followed later by the history of Soviet collectivism. As with these early Americans, "a lackluster work ethic prevailed" among the Sovietized kolkhoznik farm workers because their land had been stolen and their labor was being expropriated by the State, their "merchant sponsors". They received no more and no less regardless of how hard they worked. Famine and mass starvation (to the tune of millions) ensued until they were allowed to sell whatever they could grow on a small sliver of the land. Mirroring the American experience. This Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the collective memory of those of us old enough to remember pre-woke history so we can leaven our grandchildren's education with the truth of who we are. Of where we came from.

Great article .... but it doesn't go even half-way to describe the true miracle of Almighty God's intervention into the founding of this country. The helpful Indian .... sorry .... "Native American" was called "Squanto" (real name: Tisquantum) and he saved the Pilgrims because he had been educated by monks in Europe! And ... more importantly ... he spoke English as well as the local dialect. What are the odds of traveling to some distant land, 3500 miles from your home, and finding the one person who spoke your language?! Hand of God indeed. If it wasn't for the fact that "Squanto" is now viewed as a traitor to his people he deserves to be on a new 35 cent coin --- or a $35 bill.

As I recall, Squanto was originally kidnapped and enslaved by one of John Smith's sub-captains then sold into slavery in Europe. The people who bought him also gave him freedom, taught him their language and arranged to have him returned to America. His own tribe was gone - wiped out by disease and he journeyed north to Plymouth Rock and was instrumental in their survival.

Now that the GOP has gained a House majority, Kevin McCarthy has a real opportunity to rise to the occasion. Although it wasn’t the midterm election result McCarthy wanted, by winning the House of Representatives the Republican Party has a seat at the governing table. The 55th speaker of the House is in a position to set policies and priorities in contrast to Joe Biden, and in the process make the case that a Republican belongs back in the White House in 2024. Doing so means that McCarthy and his lieutenants will have to demonstrate they understand the value of playing the long game. Even in a complicated political environment,
