A new front in tensions between Russia and NATO has opened up after one of the Western military alliance’s members, Lithuania, banned the transit of some goods coming from Russia to its exclave Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea. Russia has vowed to retaliate over what it described as the “hostile actions” of Lithuania, warning of “serious” consequences, while NATO members have reiterated their support for the country. Here’s a brief guide to what’s going on, and why it matters as the Russia-Ukraine conflict rumbles on in the background. What’s happened? Lithuania said last week that it would ban the transit

The downtown Minneapolis Target store is making changes to the building to address safety concerns and encourage more shoppers to come inside. The hustle and bustle of downtown Minneapolis is home to Ninth Street and Nicollet Mall. “It’s a busy corner. Here’s a lot of foot traffic and buses that come through here,” said Justin Miller, who works downtown. But not everyone comes to the area to dine or shop. For the last few years, the intersection has become a magnet for crime in the city. The activity has made its way in and outside of Target. Barabra Cohns, downtown

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in favor of state Republican Party leaders in a case nominally about a voter identification law that a lower North Carolina court previously found was passed with “racial discrimination” as a “motivating factor.” Stylized as Berger v. NC Conference of NAACP, the case was decided in favor of GOP state legislators who argued the Tarheel State’s Democratic Attorney General was not “adequately” defending North Carolina Senate Bill 824, which requires a photo ID to vote. “At the heart of this lawsuit lies a challenge to the constitutionality of a North Carolina election law,”

Politico correspondent Betsy Woodruff Swan alleged Wednesday that two Democratic lawmakers spoke candidly about how the electorate does not care about Jan. 6. During a panel discussion on "Meet the Press NOW," NBC anchor Chuck Todd cited a Quinnipiac poll that asked Americans if they thought former President Trump "truly believed there was voter fraud" in the 2020 presidential election or that he has "deliberately spread false information." (Snip) 'I don't think it does," Swan responded. "I've talked to two separate Democratic members of Congress over the last couple of weeks about January 6th, obviously can't say who, and both

ATLANTA, Ga. - Democratic candidates endorsed by gubernatorial hopeful Stacey Abrams won their runoffs on Tuesday, while two of former President Donald Trump’s preferred contenders lost their congressional GOP bids. Abrams now has a unified ticket of down-ballot candidates to support her bid to unseat incumbent GOP Gov. Brian Kemp on Nov. 8. Here are the results of the Democratic statewide runoffs: Lieutenant governor’s runoff Attorney Charlie Bailey defeated former congressman and Atlanta city councilor Kwanza Hall, setting up a race against GOP nominee Burt Jones this fall. Jones, who has Trump’s endorsement, won a crowded GOP primary last month.

More than 21 million paper tax returns are still waiting for processing by the Internal Revenue Service, as the tax agency struggles to swiftly disburse refunds to American households, according to a watchdog report released on Wednesday. Most taxpayers file their returns electronically, but millions of others — disproportionately the elderly — still fill out their returns manually. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins said in her report that the IRS backlog this year is 21.3 million paper returns, 7 percent more than the 20 million that were awaiting processing at the same time last year. The report may add to the political

Michelle Farris never expected to become homeless, but here she was, sifting through garbage and towering piles of debris accumulated along a roadway on the outskirts of northeast Portland. Farris, 51, has spent much of her adult life in Oregon and has vivid memories of this area alongside the lumbering Columbia River when it was pristine, a place for quiet walks. (Snip) Broken chairs, busted-up car parts, empty booze bottles, soiled blankets, discarded clothes, crumpled tarps. Every so often, it was more than she could bear, and she attacked the clutter around her own RV, trying furiously to organize the

The global monkeypox outbreak is 'likely' to get 10 times bigger, according to the scientists behind the models that plunged the UK into Covid lockdowns. London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine scientists, who estimated how monkeypox will continue to spread, warned it is 'highly likely' that another 10,000 cases of the tropical virus would be spotted worldwide. Their model, calculated in May when just 728 cases were confirmed or suspected globally, suggests the outbreak will largely affect the men who have sex with men community, while a surge in cases among other groups is 'unlikely'. The outbreak, which was

CNN correspondent John Harwood defended President Biden against critics who have concerns over the president's age during a segment on Sunday’s "Reliable Sources." On Thursday, The Atlantic writer Mark Leibovich penned an article pleading Biden not to run for re-election in 2024 due to concerns over his age. Biden, who is already the oldest person to hold the office, will turn 80 in November and would be 82 by the beginning of a potential second term. "Let me put this bluntly: Joe Biden should not run for re-election in 2024. He is too old," Leibovich wrote. CNN host Brian Stelter

Extreme heat early in the summer season is calling into question the strength of electricity and power grids across the country, as warnings about brownouts and requests to conserve power continue to rise. As temperatures increase, the risk of power outages grows along with them. Warmer weather means higher power usage as people turn to devices like air-conditioning units and fans to try to cool their homes and offices. A May report from the non-profit North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) predicted a "high risk of energy emergencies during peak summer conditions" in the Upper Midwest. Authorities in California are investigating a smash-and-grab robbery at a Macy’s in Walnut Creek Saturday morning after three suspects stole high-end watches before fleeing the scene, officials said. The Walnut Creek Police Department said "three black male adult suspects" entered the store located in the Broadway Plaza shopping center at approximately 10:48 a.m., when they began "smashing jewelry display cases with hammers." The suspects, all wearing hoods and masks to obstruct identifying elements, stole the valuables and fled the scene. Last year, dozens of suspects robbed the Broadway Plaza Nordstrom in what witnesses described as a brazen theft like something

Germany must limit its use of gas for electricity production and prioritize the filling of storage facilities to compensate for a drop in supply from Russia, Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Sunday. In a move that goes against the principles of his environmentally-friendly Green Party, the country will also have to increase the burning of coal, Habeck said. Russian gas company Gazprom announced last week that it was reducing supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline for technical reasons, saying there had been delays in the repair of compressor turbines by the German company Siemens Energy.
