A pregnant New Zealand journalist who covered the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban is speaking out about how the Islamist group, which is widely criticized for its treatment of women, offered her a helping hand when she needed a place to stay after her home country rejected her entry.
Charlotte Bellis, a Christchurch native who was deployed to Afghanistan by Al Jazeera, wrote a column published in the New Zealand Herald that said she returned to her base in Doha, Qatar, in September, after which she realized she was pregnant. Since it is illegal to be pregnant and unmarried in Qatar,

These perverse anecdotes are worse than true. They are technically true. But their ultimate purpose is to cover up a greater evil.

"Deployed to Afghanistan by Al Jazeera".
That provides a high degree of clarity to this story.

I'm with poster #3, first thought was why didn't you get married, that would have been a lot easier than what you went through trying to get back into New Zealand. I think there's a lot more to this story.

Sure, the Taliban will let you stay, but will they let you leave? Especially with your kid. Much like the leftists in this country, get them while they're young and brain wash them with hated for their country.

I've read similar stories of New Zealanders who have been locked out of their home country due to the country's insane covid rules. Two years ago I wouldn't have believed half the stories I've read about NZ and Australia, but if I read a story saying these two countries had agreed to be annexed by China, I'd believe it.

It is shocking to see just how authoritarian the gvts of New Zealand and Australia and Canada have become. I have an old friend who lives in Melbourne, and while I always knew he leaned to the left, it must be eye-opening to him to see what it has actually come to. I'm sorry to say this, but its possible a very real civil war could break out down under between the Aussies. The Kiwis are such a small nation yet the heavy handed response of their gvt to the covid paranoia means that people will willingly give up their freedom in exchange for security, even though their security was never really in any danger.

What makes this the most humorous is how leftists have repeatedly pointed to New Zealand as their pipedream example of a benevolent democratic-socialist nanny-state. Funny how the compassion of the bureaucracy evaporates when they become frightened by something; ''oooh, scary virus, RUNAWAY. You are on your own.''

Just tell people you're married, and if it escalates, call us," she recalled the Taliban telling her. "Don't worry. Everything will be fine."
Bellis wrote, "When the Taliban offers you — a pregnant, unmarried woman — safe haven, you know your situation is messed up."
Correction, Charlotte, your whole life is messed up - and it started a long time ago.
