On his Monday show on MSNBC, Jose Diaz-Balart welcomed on network contributor and University of Texas Prof. Victoria DeFrancesco Soto to discuss the Supreme Court's upcoming term. DeFrancesco warned the Court that "80%" of Americans support abortion, so if they want to avoid a public trust crisis, they better not overturn Roe v. Wade. Not only is playing to public opinion not the Court's job, the 80% figure is wildly misleading.
Diaz-Balart asked about "the significance of this moment. We're talking about the two states now that have just instituted these much more restrictive abortion guidelines. What is the impact of this?"

Public opinion? There was a 'women's reproductive march' in Houston on Saturday. There were an estimated 10,000 people who marched from Discovery Green to city hall. 10,000 is a normal number for any Saturday at that very popular 12 acre park. The park can handle 60,000 revelers (such as with the Super Bowl). The Texas law is a flashy, effective sideshow to the real event, the Roe v. Wade case at the Supreme Court. This court session is considered an existential threat to Roe V Wade.
If the country was seriously invested in this pro abortion side of this court case the organizers would have had 150,000 to 200,000 people at that Houston march and maybe a million nationwide. But it was just another Saturday morning.

Depends on what the meaning of "Roe v. Wade" means. There is little support for the idea that a "right to abortion" extends throughout a pregnancy and even, as some now assert, after birth.

Old "MSLSD" is back at it again. They're downright hallucinating if they think 80% support abortion.

PMSNBC (not my invention) is at it again. It seems female progs are incapable of controlling their urges, cannot plan ahead, and are totally unaware of the many forms of birth control. Abortion is not birth control.

Wow. Isn’t MSNBC TOUGH! They don’t speak for all women. Why doesn’t a reporter, an honest one, interview a person who survived an abortion. I want to hear what that person thinks of abortion. I want to hear a person who knows first hand how an abortion can change a persons life. Because it does. And it can’t be reversed It’s permanent.

SCOTUS has already lost all public trust with their failure to even listen to any 2020 Election lawsuits.
The honesty and integrity of elections is far more important than undoing the Roe v. Wade mess that SCOTUS stupidly made in 1973

It SCOTUS repealed Roe, the abortion issue would be returned to the states' jurisdiction, as it was before Roe was twisted into being by a misbegotten court.
So if 80% of Americans support abortion, the states simply have to enact state laws authorizing it. Clearly, abortion was never a federal issue in the first place. What is the Left's problem?

80%?? Pfft! Maybe 80% of radical leftist Regressives, but definitely not 80% of all Americans. These whacko propagandists will say anything. I just don't understand how they can wildly exaggerate so much with a straight face!

in our country, the ratio could be 100% in favor of killing an unborn child, ie: aborting a child, but the duty of the Supreme Court is to decide on the constitutionality of the matter, not the favorability or favorability of the matter. let's hope they remember that when the matter is placed on their docket.

IMHO, abortion is not an issue for the federal bureaucracy. As per the 10th Amendment, it is an issue for each state.
(But it is easier to push any issue at the federal level rather than have a battle in each state.)

FTA: "So if we see the Court in this session come down and potentially overturn Roe v. Wade, I think that is going to be perceived as tremendous overreach by the Supreme Court, which is not an elected body, but is still politically indirectly one."
The "tremendous overreach" by the Court occurred when Roe v Wade and Casey cases were decided. The words "privacy" and "abortion" are nowhere to be found in the Constitution but were invented rights determined by unelected Supreme Court justices.
Abortion should be subject to the LEGISLATIVE process in each of the 50 states. If a states legislature passes an abortion bill and the governor signs it, that bill becomes binding law in that state together with whatever restrictions the law stipulates. If the claim that ""80%" of Americans support abortion" there should be no problem, right?

I remember Roe vs Wade. At first, it was 3 months, then it was a baby and no abortion. Then, the left interpreted this to the point that abortions occurred after the baby was born. I had a baby clinic that thought they wanted to be a public company, and I helped with that. While working there, they showed me the photos of baby development over the 9 month period. At 3 months, there is a baby. It may be your body to some point, but after that, there is somebody else's body in there.
