In 1972, a team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) predicted that humanity's pursuit of economic growth without regard for environmental and society costs would lead to society collapsing by the mid 21st century – a new study finds this may become a reality.Gaya Herrington, Sustainability and Dynamic System Analysis Lead at KPMG, undertook the task of proving or disproving MIT's claims and used a world simulation model that analyzed how our world has progressed from 1972.
Herrington looked at 10 key variables, such as population, industrial output and persistent pollution, and determined our business-as-usual mentality will spark a decline of economic growth

Unless more government and "expert" intervention. If there is fear of the collapse of society, only the unleashing of full capitalism will cure it

That's OK, because the same folks have been warning us that global warming -- err, or is it global cooling -- or is that "climate change" -- will kill us all by 2030 anyway.
Al Gore told us so, and he would never lie... /sarcasm off

Did those building the model have access to the prediction?

It never stops. I grew up being told that we would either die from a nuclear blast or a the coming Ice Age. I remember going to my mother crying that I would never get to have kids.I saw an old Johnny Carson Show, recently with Paul Ehrlich. Johnny hung on every horrifying prediction of disaster made by Ehrlich...none have come to pass.
I do think we should be paying close attention to the kooks in office right now, however. It's up to us to stop them cold in '22 and oust all of them in '24. This "woke" Socialist crowd is a very loud minority but will continue to grow as younger people are taught even less about their history, and basic classroom subjects. They have virtually ZERO general knowledge about the world before they entered. That is scary and if unchecked this may be one "kooky" prediction that could come true.

Kind of like all those predictions of the end-of-the-world, Yellowstone eruption, or the Second Coming. Yeah, some day someone will get it right. But it will be dumb luck, not wise prediction ability. And it won't be tomorrow.

The population bomb, peak oil, etc…
Anti-science morons.
Hey Stacy, do a little research on how the minimal increase in CO2 has lead to record crop harvests, all over the World. The only way we starve will be due to our government, not our ability to produce food.
Stacy Liberatore, I would be happy to debate your fact free article with you….

My friend Chuck N Little is very worried but he tells me the Dems have all the answers: disarm the racist populace, raise taxes on racists, redistribute wealth to Democrats, get rid of the filibuster, and only allow mail-in voting. Problem solved!

Low economic growth is caused by debt, which we are multiplying at a very rapid rate. Debt increases spending today at the cost of future free cashflows for investment.

After over 20 years I have given up on this site.
Despite reading the wise words of what Illinois had to say. Thank you!
That still doesn't change my opinion of most of the garbage comments that get posted and commented on here by the various racists, misogynists and other assorted loons .
(Hey, let's nuke China! was a personal favorite of mine and was a special numbskull category unto itself.)
I am sure that Lucy will block me forever here because I have dared to criticize her website which has become a cesspool,. Farewell and good luck to the few remaining sane ones.

They also predicted in the 70s that we would be in another ice age due to global cooling and most of us would starve because of reduced crop production.

In 1990, Paul "The Population Bomb" Ehrlich and Julian Simon made a bet as to the future of planet Earth in which Ehrlich predicted global doom in ten years. Specifically, Ehrlich argued that mankind was facing a demographic catastrophe with the rate of population growth quickly outstripping growth in the supply of food and resources. Simon was highly skeptical of such claims, so proposed a wager, telling Ehrlich to select any raw material he wanted and select "any date more than a year away," and Simon would bet that the commodity's price on that date would be lower than what it was at the time of the wager. Ehrlich and his colleagues picked five metals that they thought would undergo big price increases, but lo and behold, the opposite came to pass and Simon won the bet. This "we're doomed" scenario has been a favorite of the globalist "new world order" types for as long as anyone can remember, and on every occasion, they have been shown to be wrong at best, and total frauds at worst. It is always used to justify further concentration of power in the hands of the elite. The past is prologue to the future. It is true that the world will end at some point, but it won't be on account of the predicted causes. The real end-of-world scenario was revealed two thousand years ago by Yeshua to His disciples and written down for posterity by Matthew in his eponymous titled Book in the New Testament. Read it and be prepared, but never fear mans' predictions.

These overeducated fools have predicted the end of civilization at least four times since 1972 and we are getting tired waiting. When resources fall below that needed by the Earth's population, Darwin's Laws will kick in and population will be reduced. The helpless, downtrodden, unproductive, useless, whining gimmedats will be the first to go, as nature intended.

#13, don't be so hasty in abandoning Lucianne. Sarcasm plays a huge part in some very clever comments that can often be interpreted as stupid if doing a quick scan. Sometimes you have to read between the lines. Some of the wisest people in the world can be found right here.

In 1972, global cooling was a concern, not global warming. In 1972 predictions that the world would run out of oil in 20 years was being circulated. In 1972 there was a commercial with an Indian with a tear coming his cheek because there was too much trash and pollution ruining the environment. In 1972, earth day was created. In 1972 China was a country with 800 million people living in turn of the century living conditions and a military still using horses for transportation. In 1972 the so called experts were claiming food shortages would be widespread globally. Being 19 years of age at that time and after hearing and reading so much doom and gloom about the future, I was wondering if I would even be alive to see the year 2000.

FTA: "Although the 'stabilized world' scenario 'tracks least closely, a deliberate trajectory change brought about by society turning toward another goal than growth is still possible. The LtG work implies that this window of opportunity is closing fast.'" Earlier on, the article says "technological progress and investing more in public services could shift us away from collapsing."
This study is ALL about pursuing socialism/communism. And that means propping up a relatively few elites (and their cronies) on the backs of the rest of us. THEY choose what is best for us. THEY tell us when, where, and how to live. THEY determine when we die. And THIS is supposed to prevent societal collapse. I believe THIS will cause societal collapse. What we need is liberty.

They have a better plan. Use their plan with all their "concerns" about the environment and "mother earth" and we can end civilization much quicker rather than drag it out to 2040.
