Twenty-five years ago, I met Scott Morris, when we both worked at The Weekly Standard. He asked, “What kind of conservative are you? What is the basis of your conservatism?” I attempted a couple of answers, which did not satisfy him. Scott was an intellectual, who had studied philosophy, including over in Oxford. Finally, I said to him, “Look, Scott, I’m a simple fellow: I just hate the Reds. Hate, hate, hate the Reds.” He laughed and laughed, and let me off the hook, for a while.

Always held conservative pro American views. Voted that way only to watch the guy I voted for win and then crap all over my vote. With two exceptions President Reagan and President Donald John Trump. Two men from polar opposite worlds. I claim their view to be THE conservative rule to live by. AMERICA FIRST.

Well, that was a waste of my time. I used to read Nordlinger, but I have no interest in his gibberish any more.

No click for NR and certainly no click for Nordlinger. And yes, the irony of ANYONE at NR writing about this topic.... /rolleyes
NR soiled it's nest long before FOX did and they can both go to hell and stay there for all I care!! Elephants don't forget and this one won't forgive either.

How about actually conserving something instead of just blathering about what kind of conservative one is? Conservative, Inc has been, and continues to be, a pompous, verbose failure in conserving much of anything other than their positions at useless think-tanks and media outlets.

I too started to read the article. Then I read the reference to George Will then I said to myself that's enough for me. Then I looked to see how long the article was. It looked to me as some hair splitting I guess or justification for being against Trump. Just a thought because I refused to read it.

Lots of really interesting things written there, and some disgusting, foolish crap, too. Fawning over a piece of trash like George Will gets you nothing but disgust from me.
And this line:
"If conservatism means Fox News, talk radio, and Trump rallies — and for millions upon millions, it does — they are ruled out."
This is another reason for me to continue to know that whatever Nat Review and George Will and Mr. Nordlinger call "conservative" is not something that I am much impressed with. I will continue to NOT support Nat Review. They would apparently much rather have their cocktail party NYC version of 'conservatism' take this country down in flames than to sully themselves actually fighting for this country, our middle class, ordinary people and a future with freedom and success for most people.
This is a large, bold black mark for Mr. Nordlinger, in my opinion.
George Will conservatives are fools, and it appears that Mr. Nordlinger is one, too.

Please show us an example of Mr. Buckley "had trouble" with the meaning of Conservative, in the context in which he said it was a "mindset". Is it that you didn't understand of didn't agree with his answer.
The irony of Bill Kristol's instructions on the method used to interpret words: : "Back in the 1990s, when I was making some fuss over words, Bill Kristol told me, “You have to use words as they are understood in your time and place.” This is true (whether we like it or not)." ;
is actually the Liberal method of interpretation. A Conservative understands words as they were intended by the writer at the time they were written.

Other than tax cuts and perpetual foreign wars, I have no idea what conservatism means, It never delivered anything else. The progress made over the last four years was all Trump. Conservative, Inc. fought him every step of the way, as evidenced by National Repuke. Conservative, Inc. can't be bothered to provide alternatives to far-left media. It's a bankrupt ideology.

I prefer Constitutionalist. I was probably in one of the last few graduating classes in HS that received a solid education in US and state civics. Even took part of CLOSEUP in 1985. Read the Federalist papers with my daughter when homeschooling her. I dont have a complete education of law but I do know what George Washington and all the other Founding Fathers were trying to do and I support it wholeheartedly. That's all I ask of my representatives: remember the Constitution and uphold it and protect it. Thats what conservativism is to me. I am a pro-lifer - I abhor abortion - but what the USSC did to make our government pretend that its a law is even more abhorrent to me and Id rather see the states duke it out than have some twits in black robes misuse their Constitutional role to force me to pay for it. How can we possibly see them as legitimate after the rape of the Constitution they performed?
So argue among yourselves over whether or not single issues make a conservative. It means nothing if we take what the Founding Fathers gave us and pervert it to suit our modern feelz.

To keep it simple, I use the ketchup on a hamburger analogy.
A Conservative applies Government Conservatively..... just a little ketchup, just enough to enhance the flavor of the burger.
A Liberal applies Government Liberally......lots and lots of ketchup...taking over and drowning the hamburger.
Foont (#6), You Broke the Code!
Many of today's 'Professional Conservatives' prefer to be in a minority where they complain about the path the Leftists are taking the country, but at the same time not having to actually DO anything. They make a very nice living in their niches in the Bureaucracy and in their Think Tanks, complaining and collecting donations, but never really trying to accomplish anything, as our beloved America is sold down the river to the Chinese and anyone else that has the Cash to pay to Clinton/Obama/Biden, Inc. and their cronies.
