President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday calling for changes to the child vaccine schedule, including splitting up one vaccine into separate shots spaced out over time. “My administration is recognizing gold standard childhood vaccine recommendations for only 11 core vaccinations against the most serious and dangerous diseases, along with the [measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine], which hopefully will be split up,” Trump said. “We want it in three separate vaccinations, given at separate times,” he added. “Together, there could be a possibility they’re quite lethal. And separately, it looks like they are not at all lethal, but just very effective.”

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier called for records Monday from the New York Times as he seeks to scrutinize the company’s editorial practices, citing the state retirement fund's investment in the paper. The attorney general contends that the paper has engaged in “editorial malpractice" that could expose the publication to costly litigation and ultimately hurt its shareholders, which includes retirees in his state. Uthmeier alleges in a 28-page letter to the publication that there are “publicly documented failures” of the New York Times failing to apply its own editorial standards to its news stories and of it using the opinion section to “publish reported factual assertions outside the newsroom’s verification controls.”

The president sued the network in December in his personal capacity for defamation over the BBC airing a program in 2024 that edited clips from his speech on January 6, 2021, to make it seem like he was inciting violence. United States District Judge Roy K. Altman gave the president permission to file an amended complaint by next week, and dismissed the BBC's request to dismiss the lawsuit as "moot."

The short-term funding bill the U.S. Senate passed early Saturday to keep the government running through Dec. 11 would provide about $843.9 billion for defense, nearly half of the about $1.7 trillion in annualized budget authority it covers, according to a new Congressional Budget Office estimate. The measure would largely maintain federal agencies at prior-year funding rates, but it carves out billions in exceptions, including for Navy shipbuilding programs with prior-year cost increases. CBO estimated the stopgap at about $1.7 trillion in annualized budget authority and $1.87 trillion in outlays across the 12 appropriations bills it extends. Of that, $843.9 billion in budget authority is for defense.
